Being that I'm fiscally conservative and there are numerous outlets to get the info I'm looking for I don't see how they can succeed. Maybe they can woo the people who spent money to see Battlefield Earth

The whole E-economy is up in the air. It's hard to pay for sports information when there's so much free stuff available. I see them tanking.

Having said that, it seems that everything involving tech is at risk. Computer companies start up, sell products like hotcakes and then, before you know it, they've folded. On the 'Net it just seems that banners and pop-ups won't pay the bills. It'll be interesting to see the direction things move. I suspect that the free 'Net is something we'll tell our incredulous grandchildren about one day.

I'd just like to know what is the extra-special, super exclusive information that you get with the premium services? What color shorts Darren Perry wore for his workout? How does Rod Gardner's high school coach feel about him playing for the Skins? Feh.

Not to give anyone any bright ideas, but the only online sports information I'd pay for is Len Pasquarelli's Weekly Tip Sheet/Insider.

NFLtalk.com was just a nice football news portal for me. The editorial was nice icing, but I can get the cake from kffl.

Didn't an anonymous wise man once say ... "why pay for what you can get for free?" (seems certain N.Y. Knicks don't know their bromides cool.gif )

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

It could be a sign of things to change, that free is no longer the norm. Free ISP's such as Net Zero, Lycos, and Juno have all changed their ways. I think perhaps we're a bit spoiled by all the free stuff, and maybe we ought to brace for change.

The internet has been a new frontier, and just like the Old West where land was given away to anyone who wanted to work it, fans have gotten spoiled with free sports info online.

The Washington Post charges 25C for a newspaper, don't think for a minute that once all 200 million of us are on the internet, that these bigger companies won't start charging for the service.

Some will make it and some won't, that's business. But the era of free stuff is coming to an end, believe me.

Anyone see how much that free land in Scottsdale Arizona is selling for now?

Ha!

ESPN's INsider reports has been a failure for the past couple of years. They haven't been profitable and have killed the paid INsider reports in the past. Why SportsTalk.com got into bed with them is subject to debate but I'm sure $ is involved. What ESPN saw was a site that had a ton of traffic and decided to tap into a potential revenue stream. The people at SportsTalk.com got greedy and viola we have a new pay site. What they fail to realize is that there are other news outlets that don't charge a dime and people will migrate to the free sites. Too bad too, Sportstalk.com WAS a great site.
