U.S.-dropped leaflets show bin Laden inWestern clothes

WASHINGTON (CNN) --The Pentagon is trying to persuade remaining al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan to surrender by distributing leaflets that contain a doctored image of Osama bin Laden in Western-style dress.

The two-sided paper is being dropped in areas of Afghanistan where the United States believed al Qaeda fighters are.

The leaflet has an image of dead Afghan soldiers with the following statement, with spellings retained: "Usama bin Laden, the murderer and coward, has abandoned al Qaeda. He has abandoned you and run away. Give yourself up and do not die needlessly, you mean nothing to him. Save your families the grief and pain of your death."

On the other side is an altered image of bin Laden, shown without his turban or beard and dressed in a white suit and tie. In large letters, it states: "Usama bin Laden the murderer and coward has abandoned you!"

The United States is searching for bin Laden but U.S. officials say they don't have any idea where bin Laden's is hiding. It is offering a $25 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

U.S. Central Command spokesman Commander Dave Culler said the leaflets were dropped in the Afghan areas of Khowst, Ghanzai, Tora Bora, Sokhta and Tarin Kowt -- primarily in the eastern part of the country.

The message was also included in Commander Solo broadcasts -- transmissions broadcast from a EC-130 E aircraft -- for 10 hours in two local languages, including Pashto.

Some analysts say the altered photograph will not play well in some parts of the Muslim world, where there is already suspicion of the United States.

Asked whether the leaflet could be used by some to say the United States is willing to doctor or make up things -- as has been alleged about the videotape found in Afghanistan by the United States -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he had not thought about the possibility

Rumsfeld, speaking at Thursday's Pentagon media briefing, said there was "nothing much" the United States could do about what others might claim about the leaflets.

"The whole premise of bin Laden's activities in the world are premised on lies and the fact that people will say things, like you just said they might say, is true," he said.

That isn't meant to persuade al Qaeda members into surrendering so much as it's meant to create an incentive for bin Laden (who's very media conscious) to reappear in public to defend himself so we can locate him.

As for the stuff about doctoring the photo, it occurred to me too but it's not the same as a videotape. Besides, we aren't claiming that that's an actual photo. Our enemies are going to claim we're lying no matter what we say.

The administration hasn't made many mistakes in this campaign, but they sure as hell just have.

I'm down with calling bin Laden a murderer, because that he is. But the picture? Give me a break. Now those idiots are going to have total belief that the bin Laden tape was doctored and everything is a fraud.

I guess we're hoping that they're stupid enough to believe it...all they are is puppets of the media, no matter which media.

"they" is referring to the Afghans, of course.

This is a VERY astute point Redman brings up. This is done precisely to taunt a prideful man in Bin Laden. And if he's alive, he will show himself.

This is not a mistake in the slightest. The people who do not believe the Bin Laden tape are never going to. And, who cares. They don't have to. Al Jazerra (spelling whatever) showed the tape and didn't know if it was true. But, they also showed the Bin Laden tape he released himself and the same guy that doubted our tape was quoted as saying, "This is the first real evidence that he is behind the Sept. 11 attack."

We don't care if these idiots believe us or not. If they don't, they are never going to. It's not like millions of people are, "Hmmmm, do I believe that tape or not. Gosh, I don't know. But, wait, look at this. The Americans made this up. It must be they make everything up."

We aren't fighting a war of public opinion with these idiots. We can't win that war. We can attack them and make fun of them, and taunt them a second time if they don't like it. This is called rubbing it in. And, it's a wonderful thing to see smile.gif.
