slinky
http://redskins.com/story.asp?ContentID=12594 Smoot, Burrell Honored At Courage Awards 03/19/2004 By Casey Husband Redskins.com Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot and head athletic trainer John Burrell were among those honored earlier this week in Baltimore at the 26th annual Ed Block Courage Awards. Named for the long-time Baltimore athletic trainer, the award singles out those NFL players who overcome injuries to make significant contributions to their respective teams while maintaining a high level of commitment to the communities in which they play. In 2003, Smoot overcame various injuries to lead the Redskins in interceptions (with four) for the third season in a row. He is the first player in the history of the franchise to lead the team in interceptions for three consecutive seasons. Burrell, recently named the Redskins' head athletic trainer, was part of the Jacksonville staff that was selected NFL athletic training staff of the year for 2003. All 32 NFL teams select Ed Block Courage Award winners annually. Joining Smoot, for instance, were the Giants' Rich Seubert, Philadelphia's Correll Buckhalter and Dallas's Jamar Martin. The award ceremony was held last Tuesday evening. Others who were honored included former Redskin Dave Szott, now with the New York Jets. (i gotta think Ramsey was close in voting? lol)

carlsbadd
Smoot deserves it. A broken sternum is as painful as it gets. Smoot had to sllep in a recliner for two weeks and it hurts to even take a breath. To play with that takes a lot of courage in my book.
jflagg215
Smoot played with a fractured sternum and led the team in INTs. With the right kind of hit, he could have died. I know Ramsey tood a beating. But Smoot showed real courage.
jljorge
I totally agree. People may say Ramsey should've got the award but you cannot deny the fact that Smoot is going to be in the lineup if it is humanly possible....no matter what the injury. He has a lot of heart.
