A DE college prospect the Skins should consider with their #1 pick - Mock drafts

Recommended Posts

How about this DE prospect for the Skins? He is Dave Ball of UCLA. Last year as a soph he had 11.5 sacks and this year he proved it was no fluke, and has had 15.5 sacks the last I read.

He is a junior, so if he declares he might be someone we should consider with our #1 pick, depending on his 40 time.

The only thing is, I saw him play against USC and he didn't look as big as he is listed to me. Certainly not 6-6 and 275. Oh well, he could still be an edge rusher like Leonard Little or Freeney or so many others now. :)

Or how about another DE prospect...... Kenechi Udeze of USC?

He is another junior. A big kid at 6-4 285, who could also probably play DT.

Here's another guy. Michael "the burner" Turner, a junior RB at Northern Illinois. Projected 2nd or 3rd round pick if he declares. Listed at 6-0 and 223 lbs. A good pass receiver also. :)

DEFENSIVE STATISTICS

TOT FUM FUM QB

Class/Year UT AT HITS REC CAU SKS TFL INT

Fr. 1999 6 4 10 1 0 2 0 0

So. 2000 11 3 14 1 1 1 0 0

Jr. 2001 24 9 33 2 0 4 8 0

TOTALS 41 16 57 4 1 7 8 0

Positives: Natural athlete with great quickness and burst off the line. Has a lot of great pass rush moves and is willing to use them all. Has the strength to hold up against the run and uses his hands well to keep blockers from locking onto him.

Negatives: Tore up his knee in the final scrimmage prior to the 2002 season and missed the entire year. Tends to outrun rushing plays because of his speed and quickness. Needs to learn to recognize the run quicker and attack the ball carrier. Can be manhandled by bigger linemen if they can get locked up on him. Hasn't had the production you'd expect from a player of his talent.

Bottom Line: Needs to add 10-15 pounds of muscle or he may be nothing more than a pass-rush specialist. While he did tear up his knee a little over a year ago, he has shown no ill effects thus far. With the quality of defensive ends this year, Ritzmann may slide to the middle rounds of the draft.

SkinsNorth,

Yeah but I bet if Ball declares and turns in a fast 40 time, you will see him move up the charts fast.

A fast 40 time and 11.5 and 15.5 sacks in the PAC10 is a real good resume in the NFL. :)

I agree if he declares & runs a fast 40 time his stock will increase, but those a 2 big if's.

Ritzman is an intriguing prospect as well as he will likely not be a top pick, so he could likley be aquired in the 3-4 rd.

I've been following the ball twins a bit since I've been attending UCLA for my PhD. It's kind of funny, thier two DE's are Matt and Dave Ball, and they both only have "BALL" on thier Jerseys.

The UCLA defense has been a bright spot, but they don't exactly shut down quality offenses. I figured that was why nobody talked up Dave Ball as a draft pick. Still, if you like ball as a pick, then the DT on the team, I think his name is Leslie, should also be picked up. He is really the force in the middle that makes it all go.

Thier Free safety might be worth a look as well.

However, I think all of these players are not first round guys, but they might be able to contribute. They played some very good games, but still ended up 6-6, so it's hard to get a read on them.

I've got a feeling that Danny will trade down this year. Never one to be boring, he's got to mix it up somehow. PLus, this defense needs a few young talented players, not just one or two. Let's just hope that Vinny and Danny can evaluate talent a little better than say in 2002...Andre Lott anyone:(

i remember seeing UCLA play one game last year and Ball really stood out. mainly because the guy is freakin' huge and had very good closing speed, balance, and appeared to be able to handle a bigger stronger OT. he really impressed me. haven't heard about him leaving school yet or carrying a first round grade, but it is imperative that we draft DT and DE with our first two picks.

oh yeah, STU SCHWIGERT (sp?) is gonna be a great pro player. he won't last past the mid-second and might challenge brandon everage as the second safety off the board.

Someone mentioned Kenechi Udeze from USC earlier. They said that he could play DT. Well, he could, but why? The kid is 6'5", 285, but he's also a sick edge rusher. He's the complete package. Kinda reminds me of a certain someone that we had to deal with in the 80s and 90s, you know, the guy that Bruce Smith just passed by? What was his name again? :)

Seriously, if Udeze enters early, and we don't take him, we'd be morons. Then again, that isn't all that inaccurate in describing Danny's bug-eyed love slave.

i think the guy who did that last mock was stoned. how does ELI MANNING get past SD, and OAK? and last till pick 6? and i hope we reach for a DE in the first. i still don't think there is anybody worth drafting there, but come combine time we'll see. and how does DJ Williams get drafted in the second round? and how do the NYG pass on a OL? that would start fire Accorsi threads on the Giants message boards.

and i would rather pick S (Taylor) in the first than any DE available now.

the latest nfl draft countdown mock is the best i have seen yet. not in full agreement, but it is pretty good.

There is a very good DE in Division 1 AA that people were talking about on tv the other day, i forget his name and school. But they showed highlights and i was very impressed. They said he's a beast of a pass rusher and will probably go in the 3rd or 4th round.

They said he had 6 sacks in a game once.
