Recency bias.

The fact you have to explain how significant he is to non-hockey fans is sad.  If you have to explain the importance to people in order to make sure they “get it” then there’s a chance that they don’t care to begin with. And if you have to evoke someone else who’s a legend from another sport to emphasize the importance of what’s going on in the niche sport, you’re admitting it’s a niche.

I didn't "have to", I just thought it was interesting and an easy way to explain era comparisons. It's pretty common to use analogies in conversations.

If I go up to any random sports fan and say a player is second all-time in goals, that pretty much says it all. Everyone knows what a goal is, and if only one person, who happens to be Wayne Gretzky, is ahead of you, sports fans can grasp that.

The discussion is not "is the NHL more popular than the other three leagues in the U.S." - nobody would argue that.

The number of people not voting for Walter Johnson is telling. The award the best pitcher every year could very well be called the "Walter Johnson Award"

This is a case of not really "Recency bias" but more "a zillion years ago" bias. If Walter Johnson pitched in the 60s and 70s, there'd be so much more appreciation for him. But he pitched SO long ago it's hard for people to connect.
