REDSKINS AT DOLPHINS

TODAY: 8:30 p.m. ON THE AIR: TV - ESPN. Radio - WRNL (910), WJMO (105.7), 8

Steve Spurrier would like to see the Washington Redskins so fired up for tonight's game against the Miami Dolphins that his team sees red.

Instead, they will be seeing or- ange, massive amounts of orange.

Tonight, for the first time in their history, the Dolphins will be in orange jerseys.

The NFL is permitting teams to wear a third uniform this season (the Dolphins' other jerseys are aqua and white), and the Dolphins came up with the orange top. Orange is the third, and until tonight, the less obvious, color in their current uniforms.

Miami coach Dave Wannstedt hopes the new jerseys bring some life to the stagnant Dolphins offense.

The Dolphins (6-4) managed just nine points last week against the Baltimore Ravens. The good news was those nine points were enough to win 9-6 in overtime.

In the Dolphins' defense, starting quarterback Jay Fiedler has been out with a knee injury. Backup Brian Griese, who will start tonight, has struggled recently, and the offensive line has had a tough time protecting either quarterback.

The Redskins (4-6) can sympathize with that.

But while the Dolphins' offense is struggling, their defense is holding steady.

Miami is No. 1 in the NFL in scoring defense and No. 3 overall against the run.

"They give up some passing yards because no one can run on them," Redskins coach Steve Spurrier said.

The Dolphins have yet to allow an opposing running back to gain 100 yards in a game this season, and the Redskins haven't had a running back gain 100 yards. Washington averages 98.4 yards rushing.

That stands in contrast to the Dolphins, who average 108 yards rushing and have had more rushing attempts this season (292), than pass attempts (290).

One very big reason for that is Ricky Williams, Miami's starting running back.

Williams, 25, is one of the premier runners in the league. When the situation calls for a run, there is no doubt who will get the ball. Williams has 246 carries this season, which is 230 more than his backup, Travis Minor.

"He's fast and powerful," said Redskins middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. "They're going to run him 30 or 40 times. It's tough to bring him down. You've got to bring your 'A' game.

"But it's tough on him, too. Carrying the ball that much takes a toll. At that rate, he's not going to last that long."

Meanwhile for the Redskins, no one can say how long quarterback Patrick Ramsey will last, if he plays at all. Ramsey has a bone injury in his right foot that is causing him great discomfort. The problem limits his ability to slide in the pocket. It hurts when he plants to throw, and the pain increases when he pushes off to throw a pass.

Ramsey hopes to play, but he must ask himself whether it is in the best interest of his personal health and the team's success.

The Dolphins hope they find success in their new orange jerseys, although it's not clear they are a hit with every player.

"Are we wearing them?" Griese said. "I thought we were going to wear them on Halloween because they make us look like pumpkins."

The Redskins had hoped to be the belle of the ball this year, but the clock is close to striking 12, and they seem more likely to turn into pumpkins than into postseason participants. They have lost five of their past six games and have injury problems at quarterback and running back.

"We've got to get a win," Trotter said. "We've got to find a way to win a close game. All we've been able to do is find a way to lose."
