Keyshawn Johnson to join FOX studio

November 21, 2003

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Keyshawn Johnson is wanted after all - by FOX.

FOX Sports announced Thursday that the deactivated Tampa Bay Buccaneers' wide receiver will be an in-studio NFL analyst.

It was unknown whether or not Johnson would begin this week or how long he would be with the network. He is expected to discuss "his final days in Tampa and other issues in the NFL."

The news came just two days after the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers announced that Johnson would be deactivated for the final six games of the season.

Johnson was the Bucs' leading receiver the last three seasons, but he had been unhappy with his role in the offense and had hinted that he would be willing to play elsewhere next year.

Bucs general manager Rich McKay claimed that Johnson had made it very clear he had no intention of returning to the team next season, saying his actions were having a negative effect on the team.

At 4-6, Tampa Bay is three games out of a playoff berth in the NFC.

McKay and Johnson's agent agreed that it would not be necessary for him to be present at the team's facility for the remainder of the year. He still will be paid but likely will be traded or released in the offseason.

Johnson, who had openly complained about not getting enough passes thrown his way, also had a strained relationship with coach Jon Gruden.

Johnson was second on the Bucs this season with 45 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns. He had only eight catches the last two games.

Selected first overall in 1996, Johnson was dealt to Bucs in the 2000 offseason for a pair of first-round picks after he failed to restructure his contract with the New York Jets.

In three-plus seasons with the Bucs, Johnson has 398 catches for 3,828 yards with 17 touchdowns. For his career, the three-time Pro Bowler has 603 receptions for 7,936 yards and 48 TDs.
