REDSKINS REPORT CARD

Staff writer Paul Woody grades Washington's 20-17 loss to Carolina

PASSING

Patrick Ramsey struggled most of the afternoon. When he had time survey the field and room to step into his throws, he was good. He did not enjoy that situation very often. The Panthers brought a few blitzes but were able to get pressure on Ramsey most of the day with their front four. Laveranues Coles was held to 8.8 yards per catch, and Rod Gardner had just two receptions. It could be time to give Darnerien McCants more opportunities. Ramsey missed a number of open receivers, and he was ineffective on the Redskins' final possession. D

RUNNING

The Trung Canidate era is not going well. The Redskins' starting running back averaged 1.8 yards against a tough defense. Rock Cartwright was better, gaining 32 yards on nine carries, but his fumble at the goal line denied the Redskins a touchdown. He had just eight carries after that. D

DEFENSE

The unit was determined, but the results were mixed. In the "good" category, the defense came up with four turnovers. Running back Stephen Davis was held to an average of 3.3 yards per carry. In the "bad" category, the Panthers put together a 71-yard touchdown drive to win the game. In that drive, the Redskins allowed Davis to catch a short pass and gain 25 yards on a fourth-and-1 from the Carolina 38. The defense got some pressure on Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme but had no sacks. C

SPECIAL TEAMS

The punt coverage was solid, but the kickoff-coverage team is springing leaks. The Panthers opened the second half with a 39-yard return, and that helped set up a touchdown. Redskins return man Chad Morton, coming back from a sprained ankle, averaged 15.5 yards on his punt returns. Kicker John Hall missed a 46-yard field goal try wide left, and those points would have come in handy. C
