JMS
Can't you almost hear the music? Scientists Create A Powerful Muscle Fibre From Fishing Line And Sewing ThreadAn international team led by researchers from the University of Texas, Dallas, has created artificial muscle fibres from a polyethylene fishing line and a nylon sewing thread, which could successfully replace the much weaker and expensive synthetic muscles produced today.Researchers twisted and coiled a high-strength polymer fishing line and sewing thread to create extremely powerful artificial muscles that have the ability to both contract and relax. These new muscles can carry very heavy objects and produce more mechanical power than human or animal muscles. They can contract by about 50 percent of their length when compared to the 20 percent by natural fibres.“In terms of the strength and power of the artificial muscle, we found that it can quickly lift weights 100 times heavier than a same-sized human muscle can, in a single contraction,” said Professor John Madden from University of British Columbia Electrical and Computer Engineering. http://www.thealmagest.com/scientists-create-powerful-muscle-fibre-fishing-line-sewing-thread/10418
twa
But how do they get them to contract in humans?....or are they planned simply for splicing into muscle? wouldn't they be more a ligament replacement candidate.....in robotics and exoskeletons I could see a shock absorbing benefit vs other stronger, less flexible options. add torsional actuation seems the answer, but is that practical in human use? grhqofb5
Yea think we'll just need to stick with heavy machinery, bulldozers, trenchers, etc. Those things work pretty well too.
Destino
So they could essentially mimic biological musculature and give us robot humanoids and perhaps a large red eyed robotic bull of destruction to set loose upon helpless rodeo clowns. What a time to be alive!
twa
it could improve robotic prosthetics , I admit I focused on surgical repair use earlier. modular limbs could certainly be a different matter
