With 42 more games over 5 more season's, he should of been.

I don't think it's not being objective to think if Cooley played the next 5 years with RGIII throwing him the rock he'd hold most every record we have for a TE. Hell, he holds the receptions record and is only 793 yards shy of Jerry's total yards record for the B&G.

Would that make Cooley a better TE than Smith? I wouldn't like to say one way or the other. It's real hard to compare players from different era's. I was just making the point that had he had the same duration, aside from the poor standard of QB, we could possibly be now talking about different guys in the OP.

What isn't in question is how exceptionally fortunate this franchise has been to have two of the best receiving TE's in completely different era's.

Hail.

You are wrong Gibbs. You say it's hard to compare different eras, but Jerry puts up better numbers than Cooley in an era with a 3000 yard passer every 10 years or so? How can you say that Smith's 67 catches 800+ yards and 12 TDs (NFL single season record at the time) in the 1960s, a time when the tight end was barely used at all, isn't more impressive than what Cooley has put together? Cooley is playing in an era where passing is king and tight ends are getting 1300 yards and 15+ TDs. You can't look at both of their careers and say Cooleys 800 yards and 6 TDs or whatever is just as good because it simply isn't. Jerry put together one of the greatest single seasons for a TE in NFL history at his time, retired #1 in TDs and #2 in receptions. Cooley is nowhere near any of that no matter how you stack it. Cooley has played in a different era with more lax rules and much higher amounts of passing yards and he still can't surpass Jerry's numbers or put up a top 3 TE season. I don't think you understand how much different Jerry Smith's 5000+ career yards and Cooley's 4500+ yards are. It's naive to argue that Cooley is just as if not more impressive because he has 7 more receptions than a TE that played in the 60s and played with Campbell, Brunell, and McNabb. Cooley has "enjoyed" more 3000 yard passers than Jerry ever did. It's like arguing Hines Ward is better than Don Hutson because Ward had a season just as good in the early 2000s.

... The problem with Clark is that he started his career in the mid 80s and ended it in the mid 90s when the passing game started to blow up, and he only played for 10 seasons compared to a lot of others who played 16,17 seasons. ...
IIRC, he also played in the USFL. Are you counting that time, as well?

Actually, given that the voting is done by media eggheads, his homosexuality might actually help him (though he does deserve it). ("Look how progressive we are!") As for the commercial, wow, a new car for under $3,100. Loooong time ago.
