Two Words: Special Teams!

HORRIBLE! No excuse. How many times are we going to fumble a punt, miss a FG, have a punt blocked, KICK THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS, or have a ugly kick return?

Every single game we have some sort of Special Teams incident, and it's Special Teams that wins ball games.

Am I the only one that can't look every time we kick a FG, or punt return etc.

People can bitc* all they want about our 3-4(and yes I know it's absolutely terrible) but Field Postion wins games.

In other words.....We're F***ed

The bigger question is: how the hell does Danny Smith still have a job? I've noticed every Skins game so far, there's been a mistake on special teams... Dallas blocked FG, Houston blocked FG, St. Louis muffed punt by Buchanon (but luckily it went out of bounds, could have been even more costly). This is just unacceptable to me. So, why do we still have this loser on our team? He has no clue how to discipline the special teams.

The special teams have always been garbage every year. And what ever happened to Brandon Banks returning kicks? I know he fumbled a bit in preseason, but can we at least give him a shot? True, he could be a risk, but c'mon now. He's our homerun threat I thought...

I posted this in the other thread, but sense there seem to be two special teams threads, I'll post it here too. Fans notice a muffed punt or missed kick, but fail to appreciate solid dependable kick and punt coverage.

Yes, Danny Smith is a good special teams coach.

I don't think bad snaps, missed field goals, kickoffs out of bounds, fumbled returns, etc. are signs of a bad special teams coach... at all. That's a player making a mistake.

A good special teams coach is most evident in kick and punt coverage. That's where a disciplined well coached team doesn't miss assignments or leave lanes wide open.

Here's how we ranking in terms of punt and kick returns over the last few years:

NFL Rank Kick Return Average (coverage)

2009 3rd

2008 3rd

2007 4th

2006 4th

2005 5th

NFL Rank Punt Return Average (coverage)

2009 6th

2008 26th

2007 6th

2006 8th

2005 2nd

Aside from our Punt coverage in 2008, we've been among the best in the league every year. That's why Danny Smith is a damn good special teams coach.
