Cliff Lee is headed to the Texas Rangers.

As first reported by the New York Post, the Rangers landed the ace left-hander and relief pitcher Mark Lowe from the Mariners in exchange for first-baseman Justin Smoak and three other players.

The Yankees had emerged as the front-runner earlier Friday before a proposed deal stalled due to the Mariners’ concerns over an ankle injury to one of the three players they would have received, Double A second baseman David Adams, major-league sources said.

The Rangers, identified Thursday as the front-runner by one rival general manager, made another push that appears to have been successful. The Mariners had been scouting the Rangers' farm system.

Earlier Friday, the Mariners were set a package of three prospects from the Yankees for Lee — Adams, Triple A catcher Jesus Montero and Triple A right-hander Zach McAllister, sources said.

Montero was the centerpiece of the deal. Adams was widely reported to be the second piece.

Lee, a 31-year-old left-hander, is 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA this season. He was scheduled to pitch against the Yankees in Seattle on Friday night.

Includes reporting from the New York Post.

I love it when the Yankees get pwned. But why would the Mariners trade Lee within the division. This is worst than the Eagles giving the Redskins Mcnabb......... maybe not :silly:

You would think that the success of Derek Jeter would have been an incentive for the Yankees to keep developing their players instead of trading all of their prospects.

Especially when we don't even need another starter. Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Vasquez, Hughes sounds pretty good to me. Not sure who the odd man out was going to be.

Still, not quite sure how the Yankees got 'pwned' in this instance. :whoknows:

Don't you get it? They have to wait until the offseason and not give up a highly touted prospect. Ownage!?!

This was already being discussed in the MLB thread... including the OP himself. The fact that he had to start a new thread means nothing more than he's 21-year old attention whore. What else is new.

**** that. We should offer the Rangers Joba straight up for him.

The switch to the rotation has really messed up the kid's mojo. He was ineffective as a starter... and now he's unreliable as a reliever.

Running out of patience for him.

Vasquez would have been traded if they could have gotten Lee; however, when Lee is signed as a free agent in the winter it will most likely be to replace Pettitte, who IMO will retire after this season. Then the rotation will look like:

Sabathia

Lee

Burnett

Hughes

Vasquez

Now that they haven't traded, they'll also have Montero's bat for next year as well, just another plus for Yankees fans.
