PACKERS WERE IN DENIAL ON GILBERT

In the wake of the news that Green Bay nose tackle Gilbert Brown will miss the season with a torn biceps muscle suffered in Saturday's preseason match-up at Atlanta, a league personnel exec tells us that the Packers refused to believe that Brown was out of shape, despite months away from any football activity prior to signing a contract with the team two weeks ago.

"Whether a biceps or a bicuspid," said the source, "he was out of shape and waiting to be injured."

Brown signed a four-year, $3.35 million contract with the Packers on July 27. The deal included a $400,000 bonus. He'll count $755,000 against the salary cap this season.

And speaking of out-of-shape players, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Pack immediately called free-agent defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson after learning that Brown's injury was indeed a tear. "Big Daddy" Wilkinson will visit the team on Monday.

Wilkinson was cut by the Redskins on July 29 after he refused to take a pay cut. Only one other team -- the Lions -- has shown any significant interest in Wilkinson.

Elsewhere, the Pack might wait for the Bears to cut either Ted Washington or Keith Traylor. However, with the Bears reluctant to give their division rivals an extra body, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears keep both players -- especially if the Pack can't strike a deal with Big Daddy

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Would the bears be willing to make a trade just to keep the Packers from signing one of their DT's? Depending on their salary, it might not be a bad idea to offer them a late round pick.

The Bears might not be willing to make a deal with Green Bay, but, if they are inclined to release Traylor or Washington, they may try to make a deal with us first to prevent the Pack from having a shot. Though, depending on the contract, we may not be all that interested.

You NEVER trade or deal within your own division

You NEVER trade or deal within your own division.

We had this debate last year; I still think this oft-repeated rule doesn't make sense. Teams make trades b/c both teams will be made better off (or at least believe they will). In general, a team would rationally prefer to trade outside its division, b/c if the trade is going to make some other team in the league better off, it's preferable if you play that team less often and are not competing as directly for a playoff spot.

But sometimes the only team you can make a mutually beneficial trade with (or the best trade with) is in your own division -- and if so, you should make the trade. For example, if we could trade a RB to the Eagles for a DT, making both teams a bit better off, and couldn't make a similar trade w/ any non-division team, we should do it: our welfare is still increased (compared to the Giants, Cowboys, and the rest of the league).

That said, I agree with Art that if the Bears eventually are inclined to release one of their DT's, they would be more inclined to try to work out some kind of deal w/ us to keep him out of the Packers's hands.
