Microsoft recently opened its Chicago Data Center. In its first phase, the ground floor of the facility is designed to hold up to 56 containers, each filled with anywhere from 1,800 to 2,500 servers.

Looks like they're using the same concept as Google showed off when they released their info last year. Was this microsoft one built before or after google's? Surprised one of them didn't apply for a bunch of patents and sue the other. The only differences is Microsoft's is on a larger scale and put more servers in a larger container. Google's looked to be using standard shipping containers that were modified instead of building a container specifically for this purpose. Either way they're both pretty efficient. How long before there is a giant desert full of warehouses, which are full of containers, which are full of servers?

That was pretty cool, Z. Thanks for sharing.

The concept of modularizing data center components, and containerizing them seems like the way to go. I wonder how easy it is to work on the hardware in those containers? They're usually only 10 feet wide. Then again, most traditional data center racks aren't spaced very far apart either. :whoknows: Regardless, a very cool look into the latest and greatest in data center trends.
