TLusby
When we are facing a 3rd and long on defense (obvious passing down) and we play either the Tampa 2 (London covers the middle), or the conventional Cover 2; why don't teams play the safeties over the X and Z WR's on a press/bump and run of the LOS, and allow the CB's play the deep halfs? To me, it makes more sense as the CB's are better at coverage and the safeties are more physical and will be able to disrupt the WR's routes off the LOS. The draw would be the only problem but our CB's can tackle. Someone with better football sense please explain why this is not a viable option that we see in the NFL. That's an interesting idea, especially against teams whose TEs aren't deep threats.
BigRedskinDaddy
That's an interesting idea, especially against teams whose TEs aren't deep threats. I think that might be the problem, Oldfan. Teams with big receiving TE's could use them to run seam routes that would allow them to blow by London and catch the ball at a dead run; at that point we've got a problem, because we're left with Shawn, Los or Smoot as the only guys that could bring them down. :2cents:
Spear
Better idea: let's line up our DT's over the WR's! Let's see them beat the press of 350 pound men!
BG
WHen we are defedning 3rd and long we are in a nickel package. Not Tampa
Oldfan
WHen we are defedning 3rd and long we are in a nickel package. Not Tampa 2 Why can't the fifth DB be used with the Cover Two? In fact, having your best cover safety on the TE would work nicely along with the OP's idea. Wouldn't it?

The fifth db can be used with "Tampa 2" cov or basic cov 2 it's done all the time and it's even been done by us... We used Horton last week in this manner he basically shut Shockey down on 3rd down lat week...
Zzj
i just assume our cbs are better at man coverage and our safeties are better at playing the ball.
