Taking a trip to DC - Need advice

Okay, ES family, I need some advice. My family and I want to take a trip this summer to tour Washington and need some input on where to stay and what to see. Obviously, we have to take in a visit to all the historic sites but I would love to work in something Redskins related, maybe even a visit to Redskins Park. We are looking at late July/early August. It will be my wife, four kids (ages 6-12), and me. We will be coming up from Atlanta. Can you good people recommend a reasonably safe, reasonably priced area (suburb) in which to stay? And can some of you recommend the best way for a family of fans to best experience the 'Skins flavor? Thanks for your help!

I think the reason that this topic hasn't received more replies might be that it's kind of been done periodically, if not to death.

But in the spirit of helping out a fellow Skins fan, I'll unearth some of the old threads for you:

For safe, reasonable hotel locations close in to DC, I'd look here,

here,

and here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hotels+silver+spring+md&btnG=Google+Search

You can get hotel reviews here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hotel+reviews

You can use Google Maps

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

to check the proximity of each hotel to the Metro (subway) by referencing this list of Metrorail station addresses,

http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/stations.cfm

and this metrorail map:

http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

And you can, of course, find Redskins stores here,

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=redskins+stores

and if you come during the first week of August, you'll have your best chance of getting to see the Skins practice. Look for updates here:

Enjoy!

Now I know why they call you The Chief! Thanks for all the info and uncovering the previous threads. I'm seldom in Tailgate so I had absolutely no idea there was this much stuff already there. Thanks again.

I think I'll pass on the Camelot "Museum."

Anyone else got any suggestions?

You definately have to bring them to the Camelot museum at 1823 M St NW

Washington, DC 20036

HEY HEY! Dont confuse him...you dont want to go there. I am sure your wife and kids would be upset. Its a strip club, maybe that is something you want to do when you are on your own in DC. I am a girl and I am not really a fan, but I did hear it's a pretty good one. I go to Rumors off of 19th & M a lot, so you always see people venture off in that direction.

I am trying to think of something you can do that is Redskin related. You can go to Redskins Park, but they wont let the general public in. You will get stopped at the gate. You can always hang out at the local bars in Ashburn. You always see players around. Also you can go to Tysons I & II. Its about 20 minutes outside the district. They are nice malls. Tysons II is more upscale and has nice restaurants you can go to. On the other hand Tysons I is where I always see the Redskins. I went shopping yesterday and saw Andre Carter and a few weeks ago I saw Jason Campbell, Marcus Washington, and Roc Cartwright.

Some things to do in Washington: You can go to Georgetown..where you can shop, walk around, go to the waterfront and sit on the water and watch boats come in and out. If you go to Georgetown and you like philly cheese steaks go to George's (king of the falafel) best steak and cheese ever and they are open until 5am.

Of course you can go to all the museums and monuments, see the White House, Lincoln Memorial, National Cathedral, etc. Your kids would probably enjoy the National Zoo.

We also have a lot of nice restaurants. It just depends on what you are looking to spend. If you want to eat somewhere nice you can go to the Prime Rib. You have to wear a jacket and its quite expensive, but very good. If you want something a little less expensive and fun you can go to Bar Pilar in NW or you can go to Arlington 5 minutes outside the city to places like Rock Bottom (a brewery), Irelands Four Courts, or you can go to something middle of the road that is good like DC's Chophouse near the MCI Center . Also, you can go to Adams Morgan during the day/evening for more ethnic food, but it is a little chaotic come night time. Its not the best place for children.

I would also try going a little ways out from Washington. We have a lot of things to see in the surrounding areas (ex. Alexandria, Annapolis, Shirlington). I can go on and on there are a lot of things to do and places to go. You really just have to do your research and figure out how you want to spend your money and time. Washington is conservative, but fun. Good luck and I hope you and your family has a wonderful vacation!

The last time I was there, I decided to try some new food instead of the same stuff I always I get. I went to a place called Lebanese Taverna over by Pentagon City Mall. If you park at the mall and then walk around the block to the south of it, you'll find it. If you like Mediterranean food, it's excellent.

Definitely. One of DC's best kept secrets as far as museums go. You'll see mostly locals there.

Also, as far as places to stay that are kind of in the suburbs you could look at Crystal City, it's right over by the Pentagon/Airforce Memorial/Arlington Cemetery. And it's not too far from other Arlington stuff like the Iwo Jima Memorial, plus it probably a little more price friendly than staying in the district and there's close Metro access.

We stayed at the Raddison, 9100 BASIL COURT

LARGO, Maryland, 20774

Booked it on Priceline - approximately 2 miles from FedEx - excellent stay, no problems at all.

If you have a GPS system - (YOU WILL NEED A GPS SYSTEM :D ) to get around, you'll have no problems.
