Laxpunk2006
There are currently two threads on the first page pointing to WR being a high bust rate showing evidence as to why we should not draft a WR in the first round. I thought it would be appropriate to make similar threads regarding DE's drafted the past few years. I have omitted the 06 and 07 drafts to allow time for development. I think it is unfair to judge players their first or second years as they can take time to develop to the pro game, or could be stuck behind current stars. 2005 Erasmus James- Safe to call him a bust? 5 sacks in 3 years Marcus Spears- Same deal. Little bit different as he is a 3-4 guy but 4.5 sacks is subpar Luis Castillo- Another 3-4 guy, except he is good. A+ pick Travis Johnson- 1 career sack and 78 tackles in 3 years. Mike Patterson- I like him as a player, pretty good kid and still developing 2004 Will Smith- Great player Kenechi Udeze- Not a great player, recently is having health issues. Tommie Harris- Great Player Marcus Tubbs- Had a pretty good 05 season. Played only 5 games in 06 and not at all last season. I can only assume it was an injury as I do not follow Seattle 2003 Kevin Williams- Great inside player Ty Warren- Had a monster 06 season. Solid player but not star status. Michael Haynes- Who? Out of the league Jerome McDougal- Out of the league, but in his defense he was shot. Calvin Pace- Okay, not great Tyler Brayton- Bust Dewayne Robertson- Solid at best, on the verge of bust status Jonathan Sullivan- Bust Jimmy Kennedy- Bust William Joseph- Good but not great player 2002 Julius Peppers- Off year in 07, still a star Dwight Freeney- Great player Bryan Thomas- Who? Looked him up and he had a good 06 with 8.5 sacks but has never had more than 3.5 in another season Charles Grant- Great Player Ryan Sims- Bust John Henderson- Stud Wendell Bryant- Bust, out of the league Albert Haynesworth- Headcase but a great player 2001 Justin Smith- Not a sack artist but a good DE nonetheless Andre Carter- I think he's a stud Jamaal Reynolds- Bust, out of league Gerard Warren- Became a solid but not great player Richard Seymour- Great player Daimone Lewis- Bust Marcus Stroud- Great player Ryan Pickett- Poor St. Louis, two busts in one draft 2000 Courtney Brown- Couldn't stay healthy. Bust status achieved Shaun Ellis- Good player Erik Flowers- Not familiar, and couldn't find stats Corey Simon- Stud pre-injury Chris Hovan- Up and down career, I'll call him good Out of 40 defensive lineman chosen between 2000-2005 I count 17 busts, and I think about 12 are great players. In no way do I think this means we should go WR or should go DE, I'm still in the BPA camp. I thought this may be interesting to look at.
corrupt3d
On the same note (I agree with you): Michael Strahan - Round 2 Osi Umenyiora - Round 2 Jason Tuck - Round 5 Jared Allen - Round 4 Aaron Schobel - Round 2 Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila - Round
MWLthe1st
I think it's safe to say that they're busts at every position every draft year. It is up to our HO and scouting coaches to weed out the bad to find that golden egg.

That's really what I was trying to get at with this. If it were as simple as picking a certain position for each round they wouldn't need scouts and GM's. HailSkinz1
Well done Laxpunk. The draft is a crap shoot, regardless of the round. Of course, usually the higher a player is drafted, the greater the probability of success. But, that might only be because the team has a vested interest in that player's success, so they give him a lot of time to grow. Hail, H
1972FAN
This has been already hashed in multiple threads
Taylor Made
Nice List. I think you nailed the majority of the players. Ryan Pickett is a solid NT for Green Bay, I wouldn't classify him as a bust, but just an average player.
kvarlo12000
This is why you go with best player available.
Spartacus87
This is why I definitely think we should take Brandon Albert at 21 if he's on the board, no question. Super safe pick and he's going to be a complete baller more than likely. CB is also very safe in the 1st round usually I'm pretty sure. Save the d-linemen and the WR's for Rounds 2 and up. History usually repeats itself, especially with the Skins' awesome history at drafting receivers in the first round.
Cpt.Chaos47
I think the teams that draft the best player available instead based on need. I think thats what we did last year with Landry and it seems to be working out well barring injury he is on the fast track to being a great Safety. [[ghost]]
On the same note (I agree with you):Michael Strahan - Round 2 Osi Umenyiora - Round 2 Jason Tuck - Round 5 Jared Allen - Round 4 Aaron Schobel - Round 2 Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila - Round 5 Everyone ignore that list. We need a DE in the 1st Round. Do not let that list sway your opinion. Only queers want anything but a DE in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 7th Rounds. </sarcasm>
illone
Using draft history to support a player/position in a upcoming draft is pretty stupid.
Forever21
I'm confused...I thought that WR's in the 1st were guaranteed busts and DL's were 100% guaranteed studs...weird...
2006Skins
Since there are so many busts in the 1st round, shouldn't we just trade away our 1st rounder every year? :whoknows:
outbaksean
Since there are so many busts in the 1st round, shouldn't we just trade away our 1st rounder every year? :whoknows: We should this year IMO. Lot's of talent in rounds 2-4, Vinny already said he would like to if we can find a partner.
jujuskinsfan
I agree with this, but now if we can't draft WR and DE at 1st round, the question is what do you suggest?? To be honest, I would just say that only a few players drafted at 1st round will become stars in the NFL. You could have that kinda thread for just every positions.
