Snyder talks Bruce Smith out of retirement -- for now

Financially speaking it makes sense to keep Smith around for another year if possible. He's playing for the veteran minimum. You wouldn't save much cutting him after June 1. If you keep him, you just save that much dead money for the following year when you'd have to cut him.

I don't want Smith thinking he has to be the every down player though. He's just not that anymore. He plays so very well in spurts, but he just can't bring it every week. His body isn't the same. If you could limit him to 30-40 plays a game he might be able to get a ton of sacks and make an impact on every play because he still can bring it.

reading into it, it's odd that M. Lewis was there trying to talk him into staying. I'd like to have them both back next year but I also want the team to get past the issue if M. Lewis is going to leave or not. I know he said he was staying, but I'm sure he has to listen to an opportunity if someone calls. Who knows maybe all of this will be settled within in the next couple of weeks. I'd think if M. Lewis was going to get a job offer it would be from these teams sitting at home. Let's get this over with.

Aside from the fact that (say whatever else you want) Snyder has a fan's sense of some of the history, I'll bet he wants to see the sack record broken in a Redskins uniform as much as everybody here does, plus I'd be willing to bet that the marketing and PR benefits to the team at least crossed his mind . . . .

nine sacks is pretty respectable and he does come pretty cheap. In addition to that he's a veteran voice that will come in handy if we have another up and down season.

Also I hate Reggie White and would love for someone in a Redskins uniform to break his record.

Smith's stats:

10 sacks in 2000

3.5 in 2001

9.0 in 2002

that's two strong seasons for a guy that was 36 when he came here.

His season in 2002 mirrored that of the rest of the team. He had a so-so to fair first 8 games and then produced 8 of his 9 sacks in the last half of the season.

We'd be crazy not to want Bruce around next year as -- at the least -- a pass-rushing specialist for the 775K or so he's slated to make. When his head is in the right place, as it was in the first half of the 2000 season and the last half of this season, he's still got an amazing ability to get to the qb.

With Stephen Davis, the reason we won't even try to resign him at a renegotiated, lower cap value is that his market value is much, much higher than his value to us in Spurrier's system, so we couldn't possibly resign him. With Bruce, his market value as a pass rushing specialist is much higher than 775K, as is his value to us, so we'd be nuts not to want him back at that cap hit.

I'm hoping that he and Ladairis Jackson make an impressive tandem next year.
