Da_Truth
Why did we give away a 3rd pick again?
elkabong82
This belongs in the around the nfl forum. I knew this thread would go over one page, even though it doesn't deserve it. the reason why it is over is because there are so many on here who just want something to complain about. Yes, let's root for our favorite team by crying about everything they do that we don't like. Let's root for our favorite team by cramming the board with pathetic one-line zingers at the FOs expense. Real creative and invaluable insight guys! Portis was injured and his status for the rest of the season was uncertain. We are a run-first team. A RUN FIRST TEAM. This means when the main part of your offense goes down (in our case the running back) you've got to move quickly to fix the situation. Now, try and see past your Betts man-crush that only exists becuase he recently did well, and realize that Betts was an average-at-best back, who probably wouldn't be a Redskin right now if Portis hadn't gone down. Gibbs and Co. see their elite guy and key compnent go down, and behind him is a guy w/ no break away speed, can't break many tackles, and has fumble and injury problems. The guy behind Betts is a special teams ace. Looking at that situation, I'd completely agree that a running back was needed to help Betts. The Skins saw in Duckett their future back-up to Portis. Then, near the end of the season, JC comes in, Gibbs puts more of his own emphasis on the offense over Saunders, and teams have to play back a little. The line creates huge holes, and Betts racks up the yards. Betts still fumbles, costing us several games. Betts only has one or two runs over 20 yards, his longest being 26 yards. If CP had been in, we're talking about LT numbers. This is why we didn't extend Betts until near the end of the season. The trade for Duckett wasn't stupid, Betts just got lucky by improving his pass catching and being the primary guy when the offense started clicking. Before this stretch, Betts looked exactly as he had before, unimpressive. With the line performing the way it did, I'll even go so far as to suggest that if we had a healthy CP all year, we were in the playoffs ahead of the Giants. Duckett was our future back-up to Portis, not Betts. Betts benefitted from the fact he was here before Duckett and thus was the primary back when CP went down. Betts also benefits from his pass catching. That ability is very valuable to have in a back-up running back. Betts showed that with a great O-line, he can put up over a 1000 yards, so the Skins opted to extend him, a player already familiar with the system and team, over Duckett. Had Betts continued his lame-duck ways, Duckett would have the extension, and all of you would be crying about how we should have traded Betts for a draft pick when we had the chance (like you did with Ramsey).
