The "ASK MSF A QUESTION" thread

Have you ever taken a "noob" under your wing?

Not really. At least not as a "mentor". That's part of the role of our Knights and our Knight's Marshal. I'm not saying that I've never taken a new fighter aside and given them some advice or explained/corrected some technique or etiquette issue with them, but my personality just doesn't lead to good mentoring skills.

Actually I have a question regarding your book budget.

Have you, or would you consider one of the Kindle (from Amazon/10 bucks per book)devices ?

Personally I am thinking about buying one for my in-laws, I just hope the technology doesn't change too quickly since it is a $400 initial investment.

I've seen similar devices, and just looked up the Kindle when you mentioned it. Maybe it's just my background having worked in a library or the fact that I'm a bookphile, but I just have a hard time believing that I could ever get into reading that way. In my youth, some of my best friends were books. Dog-eared copies that I'd read three or four times and that simply holding brought back memories of places and people. Besides, a lot of what I read isn't NYT Best Seller type material or stuff that has a lot of current commercial appeal so I doubt that it's available through their service.

Some other company had one a few years back, but the technology has grown even beyond that. The Kindle has peaked my interest because I like to read, however I hate having stuff that I don't use (knick-knacks and such). My in-laws read much more than I do and after reading about it, I think it would be something that would be great for them.

...That's the thing though, you can read and read and read. You eliminate the need for a book mark even, it knows where you left off. I understand you read more than NYT stuff, as do I, but that (IMO) is just the tip of the iceberg with this type of stuff.

I understand the "clutter" concept. Storing books can be a royal pain in the butt. However, for me it's probably the nostalgia of having the paper in hand. Seeing the photo or artwork on the dustcover, of re-opening the book and remembering where I was when I first read it that has such a connection for me. I just don't ever see Amazon putting most of the type of books I buy into this format. Especially the things I buy as resource material for the SCA. I doubt they'd have a lot of buyers for "The Armored Horse in Europe 1480-1620" or "Ancient and Medieval Siege Weapon: A Fully illustrated guide to siege weapons and tactics"

Who will be the next president of the USA?

Who WILL be the next POTUS.... my guess is Hillary Clinton. I can't see her giving up on the nomination and I doubt there's very little she and her political machine won't be willing to do to ensure she gets it. She'll beat McCan like a rented mule in the general election.

Also, do you watch many movies? If so, what is your favorite movie made since 1990?

Not very many. At least not in theaters. As for the favorite since 1990; that's tough. I'll give you a couple because I can't choose just one.... Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, and Saving Private Ryan

Ugh... I might have to move to Canada if Hillary gets elected (just kidding, I doubt I could ever do that). I don't see the repubs just abandoning McCain, especially if it's Hillary that they are up against. McCain or Hillary which one would you rather have?

I'll second Saving Private Ryan. The cenematography in that movie is amazing.

I don't see most Republicans abandoning McCain. I DO see CONSERVATIVES (who may or may not be Conservatives) abandoning McCain in droves. I think that most, like me, are to a point where we'd rather have a Democrat/Liberal/Socialist/Communist (as Hillary is) who will hopefully bring about a third American Revolution than the Liberal/Socialist/Republican who will simply maintain the status quo.

Yes. I'd love to see that group remake my favorite movie of all time..... "The Longest Day." Imagine the cameos they could come up with this time around.

I think all candidates promise some sort of change, I think it's really a matter of how much and what kind of change you (generally speaking) desire.

I think McCain is much more liberal than most republicans would have liked (ie: Ann Coulter). However I could also see McCain, if he actually won the election, returning to his base and as you put it "maintain the status quo". Either way, repulican or democrat, I think the there will be much less change than any one, either on the left or the right would like to see.

What was the second American revolution?

MSF,

1] Is this the only thread you remove the ban list from? Or is it removed in any other threads that you created (i.e. the job thread)?

2] I saw your mock draft post, based on the current staus of the team (i.e. making the playoffs with a backup QB, most of our O-line gone, etc.) do you think we will make the playoffs again this season under Zorn?

Yes all candidates promise change and rarely deliver. McCain is definitely Liberal. THAT'S his base, not the actual base of the Republican party.

What was the second American revolution?

It was brought on by the election of Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln and unfortunately was won by the Government rather than the people of the country.

MSF, what kind of computer do you use? What OS? Do you do your own upgrades like RAM and video card changes, or are you more likely to take it in.

I've got a Dell running Windows Vista. I'm not the sort of techno-phile who thinks I can do my own work on it. It goes in to the pros or it gets replaced.

This is the only current thread. There have been a couple others over time (they're specifically noted in the original post) but none that are currently active.

I don't think this team will win more games than I have fingers on my right hand this coming season, nor do I believe that they deserve to.

I'm curious as to what deserving might have to do with football? Or life in general? Or at least what you mean by it.

1] What do you believe is the reason for fielding such a bad team? Better put, what problems do you think we have that will cause us to miss the playoffs or only win 0-5 games?

2] Given your love and passion for the medieval times, do you play MMORPGs (i.e. Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, Everquest, Vanguard Saga of Heroes, etc.)?

I am quite sure that by now you have seen my comments on the way that I believe a football team should be built and run. Those teams who do not follow those principles do not deserve to win, including the Washington Redskins at this point in time, so far as I am concerned.

A new and completely inexperienced head coach who was not allowed to select his own staff. A quarterback who has shown less talent at winning than most high school kids. An offensive roster less talented than most major colleges. A defense that is growing older by the day and has no pass rush to speak of and no corners with NFL skills (one's over the hill the other never had NFL talent). A kicker whose kickoffs barely ROLL as far as the goal line, never mind reaching it in the air. Shall I go on?

No I do not. I know many who do but I've never heard of one where the game AND the players lived up to my expectations.

You do know that any NFL team would kick the **** out of any college team, right? The worst team in the NFL is by FAR much better than the best college team.

So who would you predict to win the superbowl this year?

Have you been surprised that the skins have made the playoffs twice in the past 3 years? Or was it just luck that we made it in?

I'm not so sure I agree with that WVU. Especially when you look at the quality of teams on both sides of that divide recently.

I have no interest or care beyond the fact that I know it will not be the Redskins and the hope it won't be the Patriots.

Yes I've been very surprised that the Redskins have bumbled and stumbled into the playoffs twice in the last three years. I would not give much if any credit to the team for those two playoff appearances, especially considering the results once they got there.

Is it strange living with a couple? I know you've been doing it for many years, so if not now was it at any point?

It's not really that strange. We were all friends or at least acquaintances before Adam & Shawna started dating back in college. Any two of us have a pretty reasonable amount of common interests and the three of us together have more than a few as well.

The two of them are not horribly "touchy" in their relationship, so what goes on in their bedroom stays there and is absolutely none of my business. I don't get involved in their arguments or squabbles. It actually works out a lot better than you might think.
