skinsfanevan
So i nthe midst of all the election-day debating here, I have a computer question My computer is desperately low on memory, and i partially blame my 50+GB music collection. I was thinking of getting an external hardrive, is that the best choice? Are there actually memory cards that would be better? And if i do get an external hardrive whats the best one for my money? Theres one at best buy that holds 60 GB and is $100 while the one that holds 250 GB is 190 but i doubt i really need that much extra memory. Coooleeey
Its not memory you are looking for, its additional hard drive space. You can either install a second drive in the system or purchase an external USB hard drive. They are pretty cheap now a days.
Coooleeey
Not sure if this link will work, but here is a 100GB external for $100. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8019716&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat33200050002&id=1156203860356 Do you just need extra file storage space? You can get a second drive for cheap as long as you aren't afraid to install it yourself. The good thing about an external drive is you can take it anywhere and plug it into just about any other system if they are running XP. If you do decide on an external drive, put your mp3's on that so your computer will perform better. It was always my understanding the more you have on your hard drive the slower the seek time = slower system performace.
Predicto
Sure - 50+ gigs of .... music files. that's what I tell my wife too.
Enter Apotheosis
I would strongly advise you to just add an additional internal drive instead of an external one. Although external drives are great for backing up your files, they are definitely slower and are disproportionately expensive.

Baculus
Yeah, you are referring to storage space - do you absolutely need an external hard drive? Best Buy recently had some 160 gb IDE HDDs on sale for around $80 or so.

GibbsFactor
would the internal replace the one i have now? I dont want to have to delete my "files" Just add the second drive as a slave, make sure your jumpers are on cable select (CS) if you are dealing with ribbon, if you don't have ribbon then you can just enable the second SATA drive in your BIOS. You can find the drive here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=internal+harddrives&Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all and it's competitor: http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?catalog=directron&query=internal+hard+drive&.autodone=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.directron.com%2F As for instructions, http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-hard-drive.htm You will then have a "D" drive and you can use that to store all downloads.
