As a lifelong Redskin fan (O-line)...

Larry Brown #43

Recommended Posts

As a lifelong Redskin fan, this O-line situation truly depresses me. The Redskins historically have been built first on a solid offensive line. Everything else came second. During Joe Gibbs' reign, we won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks. Yet the offensive line remained largely the same throughout. Seeing the current administration go into the season satisfied with such mediocrity on the line is heartbreaking. It would be like seeing a team with a history of outstanding QBs, like the 49ers, start the season with Tony Banks at the helm. I don't care who we draft or sign in the offseason if we don't rectify this embarassment of an O-line. Jack Kent Cooke must be rolling over in his grave right now.

ASF? is that you man? how was europe?

i agree with you 43. the FO's love of the "playmaker" has caused the oline to be forgotten.

but what about jansen and samuels, you say? yeah, good draftee there, but pluggin the holes with 1 yr contract deals does jack for a solid oline.

oh, for ASF's sake in absentia, fire helton.

The Skins essentially brought in a bunch of 2nd a 3rd stringers and said, "OK boys, go out there and compete and win yourself a starting job." The problem is they are playing like 2nd and 3rd stringers. It's not their fault...they are what they are. How can one expect a Wilbert Brown to seamlessly transition from NFL Europe to an NFL starting lineup. It's unrealistic. It's the fault of the aministration for not recognizing this glaring problem when they had the chance. It's too late now.

The FO has ignored the interior OL for years. They've been patching holes with aging vets or lightly regarded newbies.

Funny, if you look at one of those lists of the NFL's "best" players, you see something interesting emerge: high-profile positions get all the votes. Most of the players chosen are RBs, QBs, WRs, etc. On TSN's list, only one OG appears. That's not because there aren't talented players at guard, fullback, and TE. It's because those aren't glamour positions that score lots of points and make it on SportsCenter.

What does this have to do with the Skins? Well, it looks like the FO operates the same way. They draft players and sign FAs according to the same ranking. They ignore kickers, TEs, OGs, safeties, etc., and only sign high-profile positions. And that's why they lose.

If they'd spend their money on OGs, DTs and safeties, the Skins could compete. Kickers and OGs have KILLED the Skins the past few years. Did we learn anything? No. We draft a QB and RB with our first two picks. I'm glad we've got Ramsey, but DAMN he's gonna take a beating because of it.

<<Offseason Priority 1 = OL.>> OaktonSkinsFan

I'd go further than that. Our ONLY offseason priority should be fixing the OL. They shouldn't be allowed to address any other problems until they fix it.

This team has lots of holes. You can make a good case for adding DEs, DTs (Gardener is a UFA), WRs (Lockett and Thompson are UFAs), safeties, maybe a RB (Davis is due $8m next year) or a backup QB (Matthew and Wuerffel are UFAs). They can't fix all the holes, and they've proven that they just don't prioritize the OL.

The Skins will have lots of cap room if they fix Davis' contract. They should spend the money on the OL. The FA pickings are slim, so they'll probably have to trade for someone. Whatever it takes, all of their effort should be focused on fixing the most glaring problem the Skins have -- and it's the same one they've had for years.

No we don't. Do you honestly think Synder is going to allow a real GM to run the show? Of course not.

Synder will continue to make the first round picks-you know the glamor pick and will have an itching to sign a big name free agent.

We won't get the top level gm's to come here because Synder will demand a big say. You may get a second tier GM type person.
