I've found our starting QB for the 2002 season

No, he is NOT on our current roster

Yes, he is a wiley veteran with strong leadership skills that has taken his team to the Super Bowl.

Yes, he is scheduled to make a base salary of $5.8 million with his current team in 2002 and has a #1 draft pick nipping at his heels. A very likely cap casualty.

And yes, he would be the perfect player to mentor and help develop a young QB to start in 2003.

If the stars align right and he is released, we could end up with a better option than a Dilfer or Frerotte that would also come at a reasonable price.

Write this down for future reference, as The Angry Buddha has declared our 2002 starting quarterback to be...

Chris Chandler

a couple of problems with Chandler:

1. he is a player that rarely plays a full 16 game schedule just like Brad Johnson. At 35 years of age and after taking a lot of hits the past few years his body is breaking down the way Steve Beuerlein's is as well.

2. Chandler is an aloof personality and not the most well-liked guy in the locker room. He doesn't seem to be the kind of player that will be good with younger players. I know that Jeff Fisher didn't think Chandler was the appropriate mentor for Steve McNair in Tennessee a few years ago.

3. Chandler may have a legitimate chance to be a #2 qb for a contending team in 2002 and get the ring that eluded him in 1998. Why would Chandler want to come to the worst team in the NFC and be a one year stop gap just to suit us?

Doesn't make much sense to me.

If we have that route, surely someone else is available to be wrestled away from the roster. I could deal with Mark Rypien for that matter, since the age difference with Chandler and he aren't a factor.

Ryps' in a "temp" role behind Manning, and the compensation should be much less for him, along with trades if any, next season. IMO that's a better catch than Chandler. Ryp can handle short to medium passing, with accuracy and reads D's much better than any on our roster. He could teach our QB a thing or two also. He likes to discuss and help players grow, as he recognized that position he was once groomed in.

Hmm, Carr with teaching from Ryp

I think his name is Robertson in Oregon State??? scratch that, got to do some research. Ok it's Joey Harrington QB 6-4 220

Weight room happy and works real hard at his game. Has some big upset notches on his belt and shows a consistancy to show up in big games.

Pardon the time difference.

Randy Redskin,

Stole this from the Houston Texan's Warroom

"Joey Harrington

College: Oregon

Year: Senior

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 200

Birthday: October 21, 1978

Strengths: Excellent footwork and deceptive speed make Harrington very elusive (he was sacked only four times last year). He can throw the deep ball, play the underneath game, and improvise outside the pocket.

Teammates simply love Harrington because of his leadership skills and competitiveness. He's also extremely smart, and has said in interviews that law would be his calling were it not for football. A clutch performer, Harrington's 14-2 as a starter prior to this year and has engineered numerous come-from-behind victories...

Areas of concern: ... of course, the flip-side to comebacks is that a team has to be down first, and Harrington's done his fair share to bury the Ducks early. He's thrown 17 interceptions the past two years, including five last season against arch-rival Oregon State, costing the Ducks a trip to the Rose Bowl.

He's a bit impatient, but also still learning. His arm is strong, but not exceptionally so, and he's already had elbow surgery (after his freshman year) to help alleviate pain in his bicep. His mechanics suffer somewhat from his immaturity, as he'll sometimes throw off his back foot, across the field, etc.

And didn't Akili Smith star at Oregon...? (OK, to be fair, so did Dan Fouts, but that was like, 1940, or something.)

Is he sponge-worthy? Harrington plays in a pro-style offense, and seems to be the experts' choice for best quarterbacking prospect left in the wake of Vick and Henson's departures.

Fox Sports, in their look ahead to the 2002 draft, ranks Harrington as the fifth overall prospect; The Sporting News has him 14th. CNN/SI ranks him as their third best quarterback, behind two relative question marks (Chris Simms and Carson Palmer).

Harrington is working this summer on his release, trying to make it quicker while hoping at the same time, to add some zip to his throws and work out the kinks in some mechanical flaws. Last year, he had a tendency to hold the ball too long before lofting wounded ducks (pun... somewhat intended).

But the guy is absolutely automatic with the game on the line, holding the school record for engineering the most comebacks. Thus, he (rightly) gets a lot of Brett Favre comparisons thrown his way."

Chandler is like a boxer with a glass jar. No thanx.

Sage just may be the QB of te future he needs some reps to prove that though.

T Banks if we script the offense to his strengths can be a serviceable QB until ou younging is thought to be ready and hopefully our draft will still address the O line and D line first then QB, CB,Safety

I doubt New Englad would go for another headcase after having to deal with Glenn. Granted Westbrook has been a model citizen lately, he still has a pretty bad rep around the league.

Also, I'm afraid a second rounder may not be enough. The Texans are also looking for a Quarterback and I'm pretty sure Casserly is sitting at home enjoying his Sunday Ticket and seeing the same exact thing... Maybe a second in 2002 and a third in 2003?

HTTR!

I bet Bellichick is kicking himself in the a$$ for allowing Kraft to give Bledsoe that $100 million contract.

Westbrook is not tradeable after the October trading deadline because he is a free agent in the offseason. No one is going to give you compensation for him at that point.

And the Skins have said they are not shopping Westbrook so we will see him for another 10 weeks and that will be it.

Why would New England, which has no realistic hopes for reaching the playoffs this year, trade for a contract-less Westbrook?

We're going to have to part with draft picks to get Brady, and we'll of course be bidding with Houston (and likely others such as Seattle, Detroit, Buffalo, and Dallas, to name a few) for his services. He'll cost at least a #1.

Frankly, none of the college QB's appear to rate a top 5 pick in the draft, we'll probably need to trade down and hope to get one of the college guys with a mid-first rounder.
