Redskins Team Report

8/11/2006

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: David Patten returned from a bout of viral meningitis and got back into the action quickly. Patten was not in top shape, but he looked sharp with his route running and showed good hands. Patten is in a battle for the No.4 wideout slot, and needs to continue performing at a high level. He is capable of doing so, but the team will have to decide if his contract, which is sizeable, merits a spot as the No.4 receiver. . . .

The weakness along the offensive line became glaringly evident when Jim Molinaro was sent to the sidelines with a torn meniscus in his left knee. Molinaro was not having a great camp, but he had a solid hold on the backup job behind Chris Samuels. Tyson Walter has that spot now. Walter has played tackle in his career, but his size and footwork make him a better fit at guard. That he is the fourth best tackle on the team is an indication that the team does not have as much depth as it hoped at tackle. Chris Pino has come on well as a backup to Jon Jansen. Pino is large has, reasonable quickness and is fairly rugged.

NEWCOMER REPORT: Todd Collins is proving to be everything the team hoped he would be, and Al Saunders knew he would be, when he was signed. He has taken over for Mark Brunell when Brunell has needed rest and it is difficult to discern a great deal of dropoff in the unit's performance. Collins is extremely familiar with the new offense, and it shows. He plays with confidence, goes through his progressions quickly and almost always gets the ball to the right receiver. Collins has the arm to make all the necessary throws. He has shown a knack for getting the ball deep, a trait that is valuable to Joe Gibbs.

SCOUTING REPORT: Marcus Washington is the consummate professional. He is extremely talented, but does not rely on his talent alone. He studies and prepares more thoroughly than perhaps any player on the team. What little he lacks in talent, he makes up for by preparing so well that he's often a step ahead of the offense. Physically, he is a combination of size, speed, strength and quickness. He is a sure tackler, has the quickness of the edge to get to the quarterback and enough speed to cover backs and tight ends. His most valuable asset for the team, though, might be his boundless enthusiasm. Washington is ready to play every day, whether it's in practice or a game. He is a high-energy, high-motor player, and that is infectious for his teammates.

TRAINING CAMP BATTLES: Rocky McIntosh has yet to overtake Warrick Holdman in the battle for the job as the starting weakside linebacker. Holdman has too good a grasp on the defense to be dislodged this early in training camp. He plays at high speed in game situations, something McIntosh is not yet able to do. McIntosh, who has good speed and has a real pop to his tackles, is coming out of his rookie fog, but he still spends a fair amount of time thinking about what he should do than simply doing it out of instinct or because he has had constant repetitions at the spot. Holdman seems likely to go into the season-opener as the starter. But no one will be surprised if McIntosh is promoted to the starting unit before midseason. . . . Derrick Frost is not going to go quietly in his battle with David Lonie for the job as punter. Frost has gotten off some booming efforts so far. The ball has turned over nicely and the hang time has been good. Lonie, an Australian and a 27-year-old rookie, has a big leg, but must show he can deliver under pressure. Frost also is a better holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts than Lonie.

Interesting thoughts on Todd Collins ... everything I have seen and read in camp shows that he can throw the ball 40 yards (not exactly Brett Favre here) but usually seeks out the underneath safety valve. He has had a few long throws, but most of his stuff has been short.

Against forum rules to post an entire article.

not exactly

the poster does so at his own risk, the board is not responsible for their actions, any any copyright dispute will be with the poster

We have formal agreements with a few media outlets not to allow full content, but not all

but it is advisable not to poat the entire article.

however providing a direct link, properly creating the source, and including the title and media source in the thread header & title are board rules

They also liked Lumsden a lot back in the spring - and saw him as a replacement for Betts if Ladell wanted to go to another team, but some of that stuff is old. They have a "Support Group" for each team S.News Warroom is pretty cool.

That one S.News article posted below with the NFL player rankings was horrific though, and unlike their Warroom stuff.

I agree with bnacpa, very interesting and suprizing to hear that Collins can throw the ball deep. Is that statement inaccurate or are the fans so hungup on Brunell and Campbell that they are not paying attention to Todd? If that is true that could to change things!

I forgot about the fact that Frost has a BIG advantage over Lonie in the holding department. You need to be able to trust your holder, and wouldn't want someone who had never done it before, and its better to have a punter hold than a Qb, because it doesnt take any time away from the QB in practice, and the punter, LS, and kicker can just go off and do thier own thing to get thier timing down.

The same could be said for our young QB, once they can just play football without having to think too much, a couple of special athletes. As coach Williams would say "when the lights come on" look out!!!
