I'm just going to start a thread on this topic for my own amusement. So I'll start with our old boy Connell:

Saints | Connell Update - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

July 31, 2001 19:42:12 PT Steve Wiseman reports for the Sun Herald New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell (right hamstring injury) worked some during the first hour of practice before sitting out the rest of the workout. Coach Jim Haslett said that was the plan as Connell attempts to recover from the nagging injury.

Browns | Injuries Continue - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

July 29, 2001 19:50:24 PT Marla Ridenour reports for the Akron Beacon Journal Cleveland Browns OL Jim Pyne was in a walking boot on Sunday after spraining his right ankle on Saturday. He will be sidelined for at least a week and Coach Butch Davis said his condition would be reevaluated in seven days. G Tre Johnson (knee) practiced for the second consecutive day and said his target date to be "rocking and rolling" is August 23.

Browns | Two OL Added - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

July 29, 2001 16:21:03 PT As an update to a story first reported yesterday, the Associated Press reports the Cleveland Browns have signed veteran OL Barrett Brooks (Lions) and Scott Sanderson (Titans) to two-year contracts. No financial terms were released.

No word on if the two stories are related.

Eagles | Don't Forget the Defense - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

July 29, 2001 19:39:57 PT Phil Sheridan reports for the Philadelphia Inquirer with all the hype surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles offense, don't overlook their defense. The Eagles off-season moves shows that a considerable effort was made to add quickness and depth on the defensive side of the ball. The defense under defensive coordinator Jim Johnson should take another step forward this season. "We've improved our regular defense, and I think we've improved our 'Okie' defense by bringing in DE Ndukwe Kalu." The Okie defense is the 3-4 alignment Johnson likes to use. The left end usually stands up like an outside linebacker.

-------------------------

This answers your questions about how the Eagles plan to use Kalu. Apparently this critical offseason loss for us is only good enough to play in a gimmick defense for the Eagles as a stand-up outside pash rushing linebacker. At least we have the Oklahoma drill to counter the Okie defense.

Eagles | Pinkston Looking For His Shot- posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 1, 2001 8:24:25 PT PhiladelphiaEagles.com reports WR Todd Pinkston is looking forward to the 2001 season. He is currently listed as the team's second starting WR along with James Thrash. He'll have to hold off rookie Freddie Mitchell to maintain his spot. "I don’t worry about the depth chart. I just go out and do what I got to do, and worry about the first game," Pinkston said. Pinkston enjoyed a strong first day of two-a-days on Tuesday. The WR gives the Eagles the deep threat speed they have been lacking.

-------------------------

I like Thrash, and I wish we hadn't lost him, and I'm glad he's starting somewhere . . . particularly for the Eagles as their #1 WR. biggrin.gif

July 30, 2001 15:38:55 PT The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Brad Johnson said the cut on his left knee is healing properly and he should be back at practice in four to five days. However, coach Tony Dungy said no timetable has been set for Johnson’s return.

Eagles | WR Notes - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 2, 2001 7:13:31 PT Mark Eckel reports for the Trenton Times Philadelphia Eagles WRs Dameane Douglas and Na Brown appear to be having the best training camp so far of any of the team's WRs. WR James Thrash looks like anything but the No. 1 receiver.

--------------------------

Like I said above, I'm happy he's a division rival's #1 WR. biggrin.gif

Thrash was never a #1 receiver and won't be in the NFL. He lacks fluidity in his route running and just doesn't have soft hands.

He is ideally suited for the #3 role where he can come in on the slot and go against the backup corners using his speed straight down the field.

The upside for him is nowhere near where it is for the receivers taken early in the draft and that is why he was not worth the money to re-sign in free agency.

And our good friend Skip remains third on the Bears HB depth chart behind James Allen and Anthony Thomas. And while the below is old news, the fact is it's very telling that we were looking at Chad Morton to fill Hicks' role on the team (mediocre backup RB?):

Redskins | Trading For Morton? - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

July 20, 2001 7:26:18 PT The Washington Times reports the Washington Redskins are close to finalizing a trade for New Orleans Saints backup RB Chad Morton. The compensation will likely be for one or more draft picks. Saints GM Randy Mueller confirmed the trade talks, saying, "We have an extra running back, and [the Redskins] let it be known that they are looking for one." If Morton is acquired, he would take over Skip Hicks' role with the Redskins. There is a remote possibility the Redskins could look at Saints RB Fred McAfee, though McAfee's age (33) makes Morton a far more attractive candidate.

FB Tarik Saleh Mike Sellers

The KFFL headline says it all:

Bears | Hicks - Not Too Bad - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 5, 2001 10:33:27 PT The Daily Southtown reports Chicago Bears RB Skip Hicks displayed some good speed during last night's pre-season game against Cincinnati. He had two runs to the outside on toss plays, and he also added some toughness. He rushed for 36 yards on 11 carries, including two rushing first downs. Hicks also added a key downfield block on the team's only TD. "I'm starting to get my legs back under me,'' said Hicks, referring not to his conditioning but to learning the Bears' offense. Hicks finds himself in a potential roster fight with Marlon Barnes for the final running back spot.

BTW- why in the world would we ever question Skippy's conditioning?

The homers at PhiladelphiaEagles.com are giving Thrash rave reviews:

Eagles | WR Notes - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 5, 2001 15:03:35 PT Dave Spadaro reports for PhiladlephiaEagles.com WRs James Thrash and Todd Pinkston both had very good weekends at practice, Thrash in particular. Rookie Freddie Mitchell is back from his hip pointer and performing well.

Eagles | More On Thrash - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 4, 2001 19:21:12 PT As an update to an earlier story, PhiladelphiaEagles.com reports WR James Thrash is having a quiet - but good training camp. “James is quietly having a good camp,” said offensive coordinator Rod Dowhower, following Saturday’s morning practice. Thrash has had to learn the complicated version of the West Coast offense run by the Eagles. "Thrash is making plays. He’s running good routes,” said Dowhower. “He knows how to get lined up, where to go, make his adjustments.” So far, the Thrash has taken a back seat to rookie WR Freddie Mitchell, the team's first-round draft pick in the attention department.

I didn't like to see Sellars go - he could be another Frank Wycheck, but we're certainly not plagued by Tre's absence like the pundits seem to think:

Browns | Sellers Note - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 5, 2001 18:36:13 PT Marla Ridenour reports for the Akron Beacon Journal Cleveland Browns H-back Mike Sellers has been one of the more impressive players during the team's training camp. He is catching nearly every ball thrown his way and knocking over would be tacklers. WR Kevin Johnson calls Sellers "a freak of nature, 275 pounds who can roll." After barely catching the ball during his three seasons in Washington, Sellers has found himself a big target for QB Tim Couch. Despite the team's offensive struggles, Sellers has been repeatedly praised by Coach Butch Davis.

Browns | Nine To Skip This Weekend - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 2, 2001 20:32:25 PT Patrick McManamon reports for the Akron Beacon Journal nine Cleveland Browns won't make the trip to practice against the Buffalo Bills this weekend. They include OL Jim Pyne, Ross Verba and Tre Johnson, and WRs JaJuan Dawson, Dennis Northcutt and Kevin Johnson.

Brad's no longer playing armchair quarterback:

Buccaneers | Injury Notes- posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 6, 2001 14:13:45 PT The team's official site reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers FB Charles Kirby sustained an injury to his left Achilles' tendon midway through today's first practice. Though Head Coach Tony Dungy was not ready to give a full diagnosis, he did not appear optimistic about Kirby’s chances to return in 2001. Dungy indicated that the team was not initially planning to search the free agent wire for another fullback. The following players returned to full practice on Monday: QB Brad Johnson, WR Reidel Anthony, WR Frank Rice and RB Jamie Wilson. WR Jacquez Green and LB Jamie Duncan sat out Monday's practice with hamstring issues.

Buccaneers | Johnson OK - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 6, 2001 21:33:15 PT The Tampa Tribune reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Brad Johnson participated in his first full workout Monday, two weeks after he suffered a knee laceration and two days quicker than expected. He said he felt great and everything is fine. "I was able to drop back, move the way I wanted to move with the pitches and everything," Johnson said.

I dunno if this is appropriate for a permanent site feature, at least beyond this year. I'm just ticked at how the supposed pundits think that we've lost all this talent to free agency and that we're gonna suck this year as a result when in reality I think we've improved. I'll keep this up, and may even forward this thread to Dr. Z or another of the CNNSI imbeciles.

Broncos | A Quick Return for Sanders? - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

9:56 PT: Associated Press reports CB Deion Sanders, who has retired from the NFL, has been vague about his future intentions. However, there is talk that the Denver Broncos may have some interest in him. The Broncos defensive coordinator is Ray Rhodes, who was in charge of the Redskins' defense last year. Sanders wasn't happy when Rhodes left the Redskins.

Browns | Injury Notes - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 7, 2001 20:42:57 PT Patrick McManamon reports for the Akron Beacon Journal Cleveland Browns WR Kevin Johnson practiced again today, but he's not sure he'll play this week. Coach Butch Davis said he won't decide about Johnson's status until Friday. G Everett Lindsay sprained his left ankle in the morning practice and he was seen wearing a boot in the afternoon. H-back Mike Sellers left the morning practice after another player landed on his knee and he then skipped the afternoon practice. Coach Davis said, Sellers had a "small minor boo-boo on his knee, and he'll be fine." As an update to a previous story, backup QB Kevin Thompson will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee and miss one-to-three weeks.

-------------------------

I would not want my coach saying that the thing that kept me out of practice was a "small minor boo-boo." Isn't that what football players play through?

August 15, 2001 22:34:22 PT The Sun Herald reports New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell (hamstring) will not play against Dallas this week. Hicks is proving in yet another city that he looks most like a #1 RB when the real #1 RB is injured:

Bears | Allen Returns | RB Notes - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 15, 2001 12:50:52 PT Jimmy Greenfield reports for ChicagoSports.com Chicago Bears projected starting RB James Allen returned to practice today and declared he was 85 percent recovered from a hip flexor injury. He wouldn’t agree that a comment from coach Dick Jauron hastened his return. Jauron had said Allen would "have to practice to play." Rookie RB Anthony Thomas remains sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury. RBs Marlon Barnes and Skip Hicks are expected to see a lot of action in Saturday night's game at Kansas City, but Jauron also plans to get Allen into the game for six to 12 carries.

Bears | Hicks Ascending the Depth Chart- posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)

August 14, 2001 21:29:46 PT The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears RB James Allen remained out of practice again Tuesday with a hip flexor. His absence has given backup RB Skip Hicks a chance to move up the team's depth chart. He has moved to the brink of taking the No. 1 RB job after rushing for 48 yards Saturday night at Tennessee.
