brandies
Wrote the Great Blue about the formula, response: Hi Kirk: The league has a formula (that no one undestands) that includes net losses of players, the salary that the players leaving and coming signed for, as well as some factor of a players productivity (eg making the Pro Bowl. It seems that the net losses of players though is the most important. Cheers cl,
SlobberKnockinFootball
Does anyone know when the NFL deals out these picks for teams who lost FA's?
Vegas-Born
not a clue--but you would think that losing Smoot and pierce to FAgency we would be due something.
H-O-G
I think we got like 2 round 6 picks.
chaz13
I believe it was done in late March last year. Also compensatory picks are not tradeable.
RWJ
I think we got like 2 round 6 picks. We got the other 6th round draft pick when we traded Rod Gardner to the Panthers.
e16bball
It happens not TOO long before the draft, and I believe the previous poster was correct in saying late March, although it may be early April. I just know my mock drafts always get messed up when they throw in those extra picks...
Wingman44
Whatever we got it had to be minimal compensation because we lost 2 quality FAs (Smoot and Pierce) but added to 2 in Rabach and Patten.

I thought the story on losing the FA's is that if you don't replace their positions that they played you'd get a pretty decent pick? Am I wrong on that? H-O-G
I hope we get a couple round 4 picks. That would be cool
The Evil Genius
This was from last year - per the NFL site... Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft (April 23-24). This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
