Philip Daniels

I was really down on Philip Daniels for a lot of this year, but he has really stepped it up when we needed him the most!

From 4 sacks in Dallas, to another in the Giants game to the game ending sack/ fumble against Philly, Daniels has really come through for us in crucial games.

I still think we need another pass rushing DE, but at least Daniels seems to show that he can play the position pretty well, when needed.

I want to keep him as a starter next year and bring that 2nd/3rd round guy up behind him. I'd also like to keep Renaldo as a Dline utility guy playing end and dt. But we should bring in atleast 1 FA. Daniels has had one of his best seasons and he is indeed a beast.

Since the day of his comeback announcement in January 2004, the 65-year-old coach has said at least a hundred times that ``the past doesn't buy you anything.'' Actually, it has bought him plenty, starting with a five-year $27.5 million contract.

It also bought him Phillip Daniels.

Throughout his eight-year career in Seattle and Chicago, Daniels had always gone home to Atlanta to train in the offseason. He is devoted to a power-lifting regimen that gives him the strength he needs to play in the trenches. When he signed with Washington last year, he found the Redskins' weight program had a different emphasis that didn't suit him. Atlanta seemed a sensible offseason destination once again.

But Gibbs asked Daniels - and the entire team - to stay in town.

``I sacrificed my workouts in Atlanta just to be with the team and be a leader,'' Daniels said. ``If it was a different coach that hadn't won Super Bowls? Naw, I would have probably stayed in Atlanta. But my thing is, I just trust Joe Gibbs so much.''

Ive been thinking, yes I definitely think we need a pass rush specialist, but I noticed something lately. We may not get a lot of pressure but we stop the run very well. Ive noticed teams like Atlanta and the Colts getting tons of QB pressure but lacking against the run. I think an inexpensive 3rd down end would be best, like Mathis from the Colts.

In some instances it seems like the smaller quicker ends(kerney, uminyora) cant control their gaps as well which cause the running lanes to open. Look at Freeney, he gets a heck of a pass rush but the Colts are susceptible to the draw and stretch play. That said, Id like to see daniels and wynn stay, draft for the future and pick a cheap 3rd down rusher for special situations.
