Owens practices, upgraded from doubtful

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Terrell Owens returned to practice Thursday, a day after he was listed as doubtful for Philadelphia's game at Washington on Sunday.

Owens sprained the same ankle he had surgery on last year in last Sunday's loss to Denver. He was upgraded to questionable for the Eagles' matchup against the Redskins.

"He did a nice job," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "We limited his reps, but he did a nice job when he was in there."

Reid said Owens has been spending most of his time in the trainer's room trying to get his ankle ready.

"It's a matter of getting the swelling out," Reid said. "We'll see where it's at tomorrow."

The All-Pro wide receiver has 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns this season. He severely sprained his right ankle and broke his right leg at the end of last season, missing the final two regular-season games and the NFC playoffs before returning for the Super Bowl.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb missed his second straight practice with a rib injury, but Reid said he felt "quite a bit" better. McNabb has played through a sports hernia most of this season.

In a span of 24 hours, wide receiver Terrell Owens has gone from doubtful to questionable for Sunday's game in Washington. Owens participated in Thursday's practice despite a sprained right ankle. Donovan McNabb, however, missed a second straight workout.

Wednesday's Injury Update

There was no shortage of news on the injury front Wednesday, as the Eagles offense, defense and special teams all could be without some key players Sunday night in Washington.

On offense, wide receiver Terrell Owens is doubtful because of a sprained right ankle. The injury, suffered in the loss to Denver, forced him to miss Wednesday's practice.

WR Terrell Owens

"He is hurting," head coach Andy Reid said. "He is sore. It's going to be a fight to get him there for Sunday, but we are taking it day by day. He's made progress the last couple of days.

"The injury is a day-to-day thing and that is the way he is approaching it. We will see how it goes."

Owens leads the team in receiving with 763 yards on 47 receptions.

Owens has battled other injuries this season. However, his right ankle is the same one he had surgically repaired last season and forced him to miss the final two regular-season games and the NFC playoffs. Of course, he returned to play in the Super Bowl.

"He gets banged up like other guys get banged up," Reid said. "It happens. I don't worry that much about it. He's played through most of it and has been very effective. So, we will see how he does with this one."

Reid said rookie Reggie Brown would start if T.O. was unable to go this weekend, while third-year receiver Billy McMullen would move into the No. 3 role.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb remains on the injury report with a sports hernia. However, it was a rib contusion that forced him to miss practice Wednesday.

McNabb was injured when he fell on offensive lineman Shawn Andrews' foot. He is listed as probable.

"I'm looking forward to it getting better and better each day and getting back out on that field," McNabb said.

Koy Detmer worked with the first-team offense Wednesday, while third-string quarterback Mike McMahon saw additional reps.

On defense, end Jevon Kearse (shoulder), middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter (knee) and defensive tackle Sam Rayburn(stinger) all missed practice. Trotter is listed as probable, while Kearse and Rayburn are both listed as questionable. Defensive end N.D. Kalu (shoulder) is also questionable for Sunday, but he did practice Wednesday.

"There are day-to-day situations," Reid said. "So, we are just going to see how it goes, how the rehab part goes and whether they continue to make progress."

On special teams, Pro Bowl kicker David Akers was back on the practice field and Reid said he could return to kick field goals against the Redskins on Sunday. Jose Cortez, whom the team added last week, figures to handle, at the very least, kickoffs.

Akers hasn't played since tearing his right hamstring against Oakland back on Sept. 25. He is 2-for-5 on field-goal attempts this season.

Meanwhile, punter Dirk Johnson was placed on Injured Reserve because of a groin injury. To replace Johnson, the team signed rookie Reggie Hodges, a sixth-round pick of St. Louis who punted in five games for the Rams.

The remaining players on the team's injury report include strong safety Michael Lewis (quadricep), cornerback Lito Sheppard (knee), linebackers Jason Short (ankle) and Zeke Moreno (groin) and defensive tackle Darwin Walker (thigh). All five players practiced on Wednesday and are listed as probable.

Washington's injury report also features a number of key names.

The Redskins' starting defensive tackles -- Cornelius Griffin (hip) and Joe Salave'a (heel) -- are both questionable for this weekend. Both players did not take part in Wednesday's workout.

Also missing practice were backup safety Omar Stoutmire (hamstring) and starting tight end Robert Royal (calf). Both players are also listed as questionable.

Four players are listed as probable, including kickoff return specialist Ladell Betts (shoulder), H-back Chris Cooley (hip), starting left tackle Chris Samuels (knee) and starting right defensive end Phillip Daniels (ankle). The latter two players did not participate in Wednesday's practice.

T.O. practices at full speed

Owens' status for Sunday's game upgraded to 'questionable'

By Jeff McLane

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

As Terrell Turns continues.

One day after being listed as doubtful for Sunday night's nationally televised game against the Washington Redskins, Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens participated in today's afternoon practice.

Owens took part in most of practice and didn't appear to be favoring his right ankle, which was sprained against the Denver Broncos in last Sunday's loss. As a matter of fact, the All-Pro looked like he wasn't injured at all.

After practice Owens' condition was upgraded to questionable.

On Monday, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that Owens was day-to-day and that the ankle he hurt was the same one he had surgically repaired last season. Then yesterday, a report on ESPN.com, which cited sources, said that Owens told the Eagles he could be out as long as the next two games.

Reid dismissed the story, and said that Owens "is hurting... he's sore, and it is going to be a fight to get him there for Sunday, but we are taking it day by day, and he is making progress in the last couple of days."

Apparently, he's made a lot of progress since yesterday when he told ESPN that he wasn't going to "rush" his return and that the Eagles had capable receivers to replace him.

This morning, Owens was involved in the team's walk-throughs, but offensive coordinator Brad Childress said afterwards that Owens was going "half speed."

This afternoon, though, he was at full speed, making cuts, stops and sprints.

Meanwhile, quarterback Donovan McNabb sat out practice with his bruised ribs, among other ailments. He is listed as questionable for Sunday, as are defensive end Jevon Kearse and defensive tackle Sam Rayburn, who also missed.

Kicker David Akers was present and was kicking field goals, some as far as 40-plus yards. He is questionable, as well.

It is impossible for TO to get treatment and have his status change during the week. Yes, since ESPN devoted 10 hours to TO's injury, he must have been on his deathbed. tr1, what exactly were TO's motives for faking the injury but then coming back? I mean, this guy is the most selfish athlete of all time.....why would he care about criticism about McNabb playing injured.

Damn, I hate to see fear in another man. It seems that you caught a break yesterday and you were downright giddy. Now, the man who you have devoted 18 percent of your life to is going to personally ruin your weekend.

I can't wait.

You tell me how TO got so badly hurt last Sunday that no one noticed until Monday when he said he couldn't play for TWO weeks. And now he's at full speed? What's up with that?

You're in denial. TO is taking you for a ride again, and you're in the front seat...snuggling up to him.

Do you think WB's pending contract had anything to do with TO's early statement of not playing for the next two weeks? Do you think his 'miracle' healing might be in response to McNabb's very public statement that he's willing to play hurt...and implying that others (you fill in the blank) might not be willing to?

TO is fluid...just like your rational in supporting him.

Why did you post something that was completely opposite in the Stadium to what you are posting here. Hmmmmmm, did I just catch someone TROLLING?!?!!?

I think he's hurt and won't play a lot...this is just the team making the Redskins spend time working to defend him.

Let's see how he holds up.

Once again, we're in WB36's bizzarro world...where up is down, left is right and TO is TO.

My earlier post was before he practiced "at full speed." He had me fooled, too!

Fluid...read my earlier post
