See ya Spencer

Thinking Skins

Recommended Posts

In an article from today's post, "The Redskins claimed linebacker Donny Green from Buffalo and wide receiver Derek Dorris from New Orleans off waivers and released wide receiver Willie Spencer and defensive back Greg Walls."

Any info on these guys? I'm supposing that neither has much of a chance to make the final roster anyway, but they must have something since he signed them this late in the preseason...

Derek Dorris is 22, 6' 2" 206 WR from Texas Tech, undrafted rookie (1999 19 catches 285yds, 1 TD)

Donny Green is 23, 6' 2" 238 LB, from Virginia, undrafted rookie (speed to cover WR's, amassed lot of double digit tackles in rival ACC games against Clemson, NC, Wake Forest, NC State, Duke)

May be insurance to moitvate, for those that underachieve on ST's and dont' have a good chance to solidify a spot on the 53 man roster.

The way Marty is probably doing this is have his "options" staring them in the face (old habits die hard, but if they want to play for him, this will cut the bs). Some players reach a "comfort" level when it is likely that they will make the roster on another coach's team, but Marty leaves nothing to chance while opposing complacency.

That is what hurt us last year. Young legs and desire will push those who think they got it made in the shade. Of course could be Preseason fodder, but isn't that a little late perhaps? Maybe not since he can use them on ST's for the preseason to protect the ones he'll keep, then dump these guys.

I dont know, that guy Dorris doesn't look too good. I mean he has the size, but so does Spencer. Weren't we talking about Spencer being in the lead for the number 5 spot a few weeks back. 19 catches for a little less than 300 yards? I mean, thats nice for a game but over a ten or eleven game season? Its just not looking too good for me.

On the other hand, that Donny Green guy looks to me like a young Shawn Barber. I loved Barber when he first came in cause he was like 219 and fast as hell. Then he went and put some bulk on top of that. Now I see this guy Green and think that he could be just like him. I think he may have a good chance to make the 53.

I don't know why they woudl pick up a WR anyhow considering Thompson and McCants are having good camps and Gardner, Westbrook, and Lockett are already locks.

Blakman, if Green is 6'2 and already 238 I don't think we will have to wait for him to fill out smile.gif

Perhaps Green was one of those players the Skins tried to sign after the draft and didn't get and now they want to take a look.

I still think there is one more spot at linebacker up for grabs.

Of the younger players only Pierce has seemingly distanced himself from the pack.

They may like these guys for the practice squad, or just think they're signing freebees to quickly evaluate at little cost during the week before roster cutdowns. Either way, I'm not betting the future of our club rests upon either of those guys.
