rick301
my mainboard has some bad caps - and I was thinking about upgrading anyway ... So I am looking for a new mainboard / CPU / video card combo or individual component recommendations ... Any good review sites? Best sites to purchase from? I am leaning toward AMD CPU - it seems that you get a little more bang for the buck. As for price, for the above combo plus matching memory, my budget is around $300 I am using the standard office suite and some games, but my son is getting into games more and more and I want to be able handle the 'average - run-of-the-mill' games that he may want to play What do you suggest? Thanks for the assist!
Mr. S
i built a computer a few weeks ago, this is my new setup: Amd Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Socket 939 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103537 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813128263 good socket 939 motherboard (looked up reviews for it, rated well by gaming sites). http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814102404 skimped a little with this video card, still a 256 mb card, but i know the people here would recommend much better. this one doesnt seem too bad, but again, the gamers here will offer better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814145076 the setup that I got was about 300$ for those 3 components at the time. The processor was recommended by another poster here, and I liked that mobo. I probably shouldnt have skimped on the video card like I did, but I am running games fine so far, I think the only problem is that the card does not have a fan on it. Good Luck with your setup! herrmag
Wow Mr. S! When I read his budget, I was about to say "good luck buddy". You obviously know how to shop. When I upgrade, I'm sending you a PM!

I figgered id spend on the motherboard/cpu and skimp on everything else, and that is what I did. Hopefully after rebates, I have a 120 gb hard drive (only ATA-100 though), 512 mb ram (pc 2700 though), a solid Dvd burner, and a 56$ case, my total should have been about 460$ after rebate. I would recommend upping the video card, even though the one I got seems to work fine, but I never go online or anything.
Fred Jones
Visit these primary sites to compare online prices. www.pricewatch.com www.tomshardware.com If you can afford it I like ASUS motherboards, Corsair/Kingston/Viking RAM, nVidia video card, logitech mouse/keyboard, Dell LCD's (good price to quality ratio), Maxtor Diamondmax 10 and Western Digital raptor hard drives and the king of all burners by Plextor. However, some of these products are expensive. I like to shop at Monarch computers, newegg, Tigerdirect, sometimes Ecost and the computer shows.
