Art
In 1991 the Redskins won the Super Bowl and were 26th in the league in pass attempts. We were first in the league in rushing attempts. But, even with 25 teams throwing more frequently, we finished fifth in passing. I don't mind an offense that is heavy on the run. In fact I prefer it, adore it and want it here. It's just the WCO is designed for teams that don't necessarily run well and the short pass is an extension of the running game. On a team that runs so well without that extension, we should be threatening the intermediate and long passing routes all the time. I was thinking about Spurrier here and none of us really knows what to expect from him, but, given his background, I'd expect an offense not unlike the pass-happy attack we see out of St. Louis and, ultimately, that makes me mad. I like the Riggo drill. I like watching Davis pummel. I don't want to be throwing a ton. Just throw the right way. Is that too much to ask? bulldog
what I crave is production. that is certainly tied to effective use of personnel. Marty and Jimmy Raye did a poor job of evaluating the existing talent when they came in and that is how we ended up shipping out 80 catch fullback Larry Centers and 65 catch James Thrash while using Donnell Bennett and Michael Westbrook in a modified WCO even though Bennett has hands of stone and Westbrook doesn't run the bread and butter slants and crosses that the WCO feeds off of from the outside receivers. if your other post about Spurrier being all but on board, I am sure you are going to see our quarterback in 2002 throw more than 10 touchdown passes you would think one of his adjustments will be to continue to use the running of Davis as an anchor. the last time I checked there was only one Marshall Faulk in the NFL. TennesseeCarl
You mean throwing the ball down the field rather than relying on someone to turn a 4 yard pattern into a home run? Dang...you might be on to something.
Sarge
What will be a nice change is that if someone runs a four yard route, it's because we needed only three for the first down! ------------------ Aim High...Redskins!
skinsfan44
I'm with you Art. As long as they keep being a running type team, I will be happy. What they need to do is being able to score TD's down in the red zone. That has been the biggest problem. ------------------ BEER! ! ! The Breakfast Of Champions. @DCGoldPants
it'll be interesting to see what FA's are brought in for a new NFL style offense. ------------------
fish
I'm with Art. Especially whith what we have now. I'm a broken down old paratrooper and when the plane enters the drop zone, the GREEN LIGHT goes on and the paratroopers exit the aircraft. Once in a while, something goes wrong and we don't exit the aircraft as quickly and smoothly as we could/should. This is known as "burning green light". We are most DEF burning green light on Davis' career. There is NO reason we couldn't have won 2-3 more games and Davis could have won the rushing tittle except for the fact that the coaching staff, by self-admission - not that anybody on this board really needed them to say it, did NOT properly use Davis in the beginning of the season. My question and concern is, "Are we gonna go through that yet again next year?" Or are the days of brutal running - Riggo Drill - over entirely with the addition of Spurrier's Run and Gun? I am BUMMED man - seriously seriously BUMMED. Whatever. ------------------ HAIL [ by fish on January 13, 2002.]
NavyDave
I agree with Art this is a Diesel powered team. Just like in real battles the air attack may be glamourous and gets the press but it's the ground forces that get the job done. With an intelligent Naval person calling the shots of course ------------------ This isn't love, it's an Obsession. Redskins football
