My biggest issue w/ evaluating Howell right now is that so much of his good has came from blowout situations.

Only one our games was a complete blowout (Buffalo) and Howell's numbers were atrocious that game. We had Chicago within 10 (7 if Slye makes the kick) in the 4th quarter. After 5 weeks Howell is 6th in passing yards and tied for 13th in touchdowns. He is playing better than every young QB drafted in the last 2 seasons except Purdy and Stroud. He needs to be a bit quicker in his primary read but other than that I am very impressed and he has shown no reason to move on from him.

I dont see it getting better until we have a coaching staff who get much better production from a talented defensive roster. Not perfect by any means - big holes at linebacker - but there is plenty of talent on this D. Way too much to be giving up 32 points a game.

I agree with this. Jamin Davis should blitzing every other play.  He is too strong and fast to just be standing in zone clueless like a deer in the headlights.

  3. Just read an article that Washington has given up 16 plays for more than 25 yards, most in the NFL. Absolutely pathetic. I don't see it getting better until we have a true MLB to command the team.

Its a game of inches. Remember last years game vs the Bears, Mooney makes that catch, 2 more inches and he crosses the plain, touchdown, Bears win 14-12. Fast forward to Thursdays game. Fuller has the jump on another later pass from Fields on that key 3rd down in the 4th ( which we never made him pay for, he throws with NO anticipation, he's usually late on all his throws) Everyone though that was gonna be a pick 6, again a couple more inches by Fuller and he gets that pick 6 cause he's the most trusted DB we know who could pull it off. The game is 30-27 and has a completely different feel. But the game ends up 40-20 and history will show it was a huge blowout..

Good post. That throw Fields threw was stupid. 9 times out of 10 that's a pick 6. Never throw curls when the defender is on the inside. Kendall made a great effort, no fault to him.

It is time to sit out for the good of the team.

Much like Barton. Both need to stay off the field for the D to be good.

Rivera talks a lot of smack about accountability.  But I don't see it for the people he hand picked.  Ron benched Haskins after 4 games.  Forbes, Barton, and Wylie need to go on the bench for the season except in cases of injuries.

The ramifications of the change at secondary coaching couldn't be more obvious, now I'm torn on how good Curl and Forrest are after I've been making case to protect them and not make more holes then we already have trying to replace them.

Nope. Nuke the entire secondary. If I'm not mistaken, we only have 1 interception this year which has to be league's worst. Everyone gone, even Forbes. If we can trade Forbes for a 6th round pick, it's an upgrade.

I stand corrected. We have 2 picks, but I really don't think Forbes actually caught it.

So we are now classifying a person a bust in 4 games. This place cracks me up. Not a season or two seasons.....4 games. If after 21 games he doesn't show massive improvement then I will classify him as a bust.

It's really, really hard to get better when you're undersized. Can you imagine him on DK Metcaf in a few weeks?  Yikes....He seems like a nice young man and it's not his fault he was drafted in the first as a lockdown corner. He was drafted in the wrong round by the wrong team/system.

  8. We are not trading Terry, he is so good. McLaughlin, Payne, and Allen are the only safe players (I can't image the new regime would get rid of those guys). Will probably resign either Sweat or Young. Everything else is on the table. Hopefully Howell and EB impress enough to keep. If Howell keeps on his current path, he will finish top 10 in passing yards. Really can't ask for more from a first year starter. This team needs to be rebuilt starting with o-line and linebackers.

Ugh, must have been that new owner euphoria in my veins.

In hindsight, I can't think of any fans on this thread who were happy with Barton, Wylie, or Forbes.  This should have been obvious.  But when the season starts everyone gets excited.  Then we barely beat Arizona and Denver who are terrible teams.  We are are a 6-11 team.

I'm at the point now I just want Howell and EB to develop and become impressive.  I'm done thinking about playoffs.  If we can go into the off-season with continuity in EB and Howell, it will help immensely with the rebuild.

  10. In my opinion the biggest weakness of this team is not having a true middle linebacker.  The MLB is the QB on defense.  The d-line is good though a bit overrated.  The secondary is alright (except Forbes who is truly awful). I just cannot understand for the life of me that Ron and Jack have neglected the most important position on defense.

Even if Forbes wrapped his arms around Moore on one of those two missed tackles on the same play Moore would have just dragged him 20 yards as if he were pulling a busted up cart until he eventually let go. He isn't just getting burned on routes he is getting manhandled by ball carriers.

Completely manhandled. Looks like a skinny high schooler playing against men. You can train technique, but you can't develop physicality.

  12. It's such a shame that we are already talking about drafting another QB.  Don't get me wrong, if you have a chance for a blue chip QB, take it.  That was Ron's biggest mistake here.  We had a chance to improve the QB position in 2020 with Tua or Herbert, and missed.

It's just unfortunate for Howell because I really think that he can be a good player in the league.  It is what is.......

A new regime will have to **** or get off the pot with Howell.  They need to understand that if they pick Howell, then he's their guy that they are married to from here on out.  And I don't think a new regime is going to choose that path.  Not when you've got two super blue chip prospects in this year's draft.

Agree. I do like Howell a lot. But I also respect a new regime who wants their QB. The biggest mistake Rivers made was trying to develop his predecessor's QB.

When your first round CB gets pushed backwards five yards on a semi-push off that every NFL WR does on almost every play that most CBs don’t even notice, you know you’ve made a huge mistake. That you passed on the consensus best CB in the draft, among other players, for that guy getting pushed backwards is just mind boggling.

And to be so stubborn that you can't admit a mistake and keep sending him out there.  This is no disrespect to Forbes as a person, but at 160lb he should have been a late round draft pick.

  15. This was the lowest of the lows. There really isn't any coming back from this given the situation. Magic Johnson has every right to bash this team and indirectly confirmed a cleaning of house this off-season.

I'll admit when I'm wrong (Jamin Davis). But my God I hit the nail on the head with this last draft. I said I don't see any of those players in the league after their rookie deals. What the actual **** was that draft class?

Sam and the offense are playing well enough to win games. Not GREAT but good enough. Sam’s playing some good football - he’s got a future in this league.

The defense is giving up over 30 points a game. The defense with 6 first round picks that was supposed to carry water while a young QB found his feet is dragging the whole team down.

Yep!  So many fans want to blame the offense, but my God it was 17-0 in a blink of an eye.  From the your in hurry offense the rest of the game.

This is one of those losses that most fans are kinda going to check out.  This team needs to be rebuilt.
