There's a reason Slye is a journeyman kicker. He has a strong leg but he's not the most reliable. I held my breath every time he kicked a PAT or field goal.

Yeah not sure why anyone would be promoting the return of Slye. He was below average his entire time here.

The rest of free agency was too intentional. I have to believe that there is a solid plan at tackle and that we will add one before the draft. At least someone good enough to be a place holder.

Oh this group is too smart not to have a plan for one of the most important positions,, But that placeholder could have been Leno, who is as good as anyone else they would sign.  That was my only issue with this offseason, why not keep an established vet who won't kill you while you find your long term answer?  He had one year left, that would have been perfect.

His teammates love him and know him better than we do. Some of them are pretty pissed the Bears dumped him for peanuts. Inconsistent is what most young QB's are, and if they are inconsistent they're ahead of the curve compared to all the busts who never have any success.

Fields torched us pretty good, just imagine if things ever do click for him which is very possible (see Geno Smith, Rich Gannon, Baker Mayfield, etc....).

His contract situation requires a commitment that's too expensive right now for sure, I like how the Steelers came in and decided to get a basically free year of coaching him. The Eagles also wanted him from what I've read.

You don't evaluate a player on how much his teammates like him.  He is simply an average at best QB who has his moments but just misses too many throws.  After Year 3 we usually have a pretty good idea who a player is, even a QB.  Yes his contract is a factor when evaluating the situation and it's clear he will get a big payday.  And teams do not want to have to commit to that and for good reason.

I really do not give a hoot what "the league" says or does. They have gotten it wrong before. Fields is simply not bad as he is being made out to be.

It was absurd to believe that Fields would produce on a high level based upon what he had around him. His receiving corp. alone was suspect.   Byron Pringle? N'Keal Harry? Velus Jones? Really? Come on now.

And on top of that they had two head coaching changes I believe and a GM change, all in the span of 3 years. That is a **** show.

When a team has issues, rather than looking at all the parts and assessing them individually, typically the new HC and GM just want their own QB.

Finally, last year when they got him DJ Moore and he was healthy there was improvement in Fields game. Why was DJ Moore politicking for him? Because he knows the talent is there.  In this FA alone they acquired Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet and running back D'Andre Swift and TE Gerald Everett and decided to send him packing.

If you would like to continue to make excuses for Justin Fields be my guest. I'm just stating that the people who know more than you and I do about this have voiced their opinion and they do not agree with you.  His lack of weapons do not explain all the errant throws he continues to make. While I agree he is not as bad as people make him out to be he is just too inconsistent to ever be counted on.

How much did you watch the Bears personally last year?  I do not know what the Bears are doing. I sure don't. But if you look at their roster and what they have done in this FA, they should have done that for Fields. That is my main point.

I watched the Red Zone mostly so I got to see a lot of Fields over the past few years. I saw a very inconsistent QB.  The market has spoken and Justin Fields was worth a 6th round conditional and now he has to compete for a starting job.  The league has voiced their opinion on one Justin Fields.

Let me say this about the Bears. I think they did more over the last 72 hours to address their puny offense at the receiver position than ever before in this FA.  IMO Fields is underappreciated.

Personally, and I know I am in the minority, the Bears should keep Fields, trade down and build their roster.  DJ Moore coming out a couple of months ago and saying Fields is the one to keep, he just needs more weapons, is being proven right now in FA.  I had to watch Justin Fields a lot last year visiting a family member who moved into the area who is a diehard Bears fan.

If you are just looking at stats or him trying to make something happen because of a limited offense last year, again Moore was the only true reliable, well I have to say he is undervalued.

There were a lot of teams going into the offseason in bad need of a starting QB. If Fields was considered a good option they would have made the move.  That says a lot to me, they know more than we do and nobody is convinced he can be a starting QB who is good enough.

  7. Oh I don't think there is a question that they need 2 starting tackles. It will be interesting how they go about doing that.  I fully expect a tackle to be taken early, perhaps in a trade up to the late first as discussed.  I'll be following the first and hope to see tackles drop, with such a deep class I fully expect them to find a good one early.  But that's only one, I doubt they go into the season with 2 rookie starting tackles.

  8. I never put much stock in acquiring Caleb Williams. I think it sets a dangerous pattern where the top pick can demand his team.  Elway had a very good reason, Eli not so much.  But still it's a bad look and will only lead to more players making this demand, it will turn the NFL into the NBA.  .

With that said according to the value chart I have seen the difference between the first pick and the second is 400 points, that's the value of the 50th pick.  So I'm not sure I understand why posters are claiming it will take multiple picks including next year's first, especially when the Bears have no leverage and they are obviously taking a QB so they need to stay near the top of this draft.

Howell is more than likely gone.

With the incumbent rookie QB and Mariotta he's now the odd man out.

Besides, lots of politics going around here.

Howell was hand-picked by RR and the new FO has demonstrated they want practically nothing to do with the old regime.

I'd take a 5th rounder for him and call it a day.

Oh I know he's probably gone, just that I'd like to keep him.  But my main point was his value and some fans will be disappointed in the return.

I also find these so called "rumors" of teams willing to give up a 3rd for Howell hilariously comical.. i think a 6th rd pick would be a steal at this point.

    a..d yes i quoted myself :D

I agree with this.  I actually would like to keep Howell as he's a really cheap young QB who can play in the league.  But fans here are overvalued his worth. A 3rd or 4th won't happen IMO.

Teams draft late round QBs to be a third string QB because they don't want to spend any actual money on a third string QB and once every three or four years, one of those guys flashes in a pre-season game and the team is all "yea....we meant to do that."

Seems like Sam Howell would fill the role of that cheap 3rd string QB, only the season would not be finished if he was forced into action like the team who drafted a rookie out of Kent State would be.

  12. 5 minutes ago, Warhead36 said:

You don't try to develop two QBs at once, that's dumb. You draft a guy, you commit your entire franchise resources to his development. One guy. That's it.

That's why we're trading Howell. He's just as much a developmental project as whoever we'll take at 2.

But don't teams with a young established QB often draft a late round developmental QB?  That could be Howell only he has proven he can play. If nothing else perhaps as injuries occur during the season a team may overpay for him if they lost their first 2 QBs.  I just think his value to this team is higher than the pick they would get for him because he's so damned cheap and can play in this league.

If it's all about leveraging position into a fortune, I don't understand why you aren't surprised Albert Haynesworth isn't universally loved for leveraging his position to be paid to lay on the field.

Most fans cheer for players because they want the players to win their team a championship. I can't think of many fans in the NFL who say "I'm a fan of this particular player because his agent was able to find a team desperate enough to meet his contractual demands."

It was suggested we not discuss Kirk as it's a hot button. I'll close by simply stating that comparing Kirk Cousins, who remains the best QB this team has had since Joe Theisman, to Albert Haynesworth, who was never productive, is nonsense.

    Recency bias, SEC bias.

If they were both in the same draft I think Fields gets the edge due to size, but I Daniels might have a slightly quicker release. (Fields has that Jason Campbell wind up)  justin definitely has the stronger arm…

To be clear, I dont think Daniels is a better prospect than Fields.

Another thing I commented about earlier but nobody seems to agree. On certain throws Maye has a long windup as well, not every throw but throws down the field. I then switched to Daniels and the ball came out far more quickly.

I watched many of his games and cutups. Which specific ones and which plays are you pointing to?

I saw it in many games, I believe South Carolina and Miami as those were the most recent.  His footspeed is "Good" but that's a big difference than the really mobile QBs. If he threw it like Dan Marino I would be fine with that mobility. But he doesn't.  He honestly looks more like Bust than Star, and I hate to say that because I was really big on him.

I have a question for people who watch more football than I do:

Let's say Daniels is compared to Justin Fields.

Both are perceived to be dual-threat QBs.

What makes Daniels a better prospect than Fields?  I think Fields is bigger (weight wise by about 30 lbs).  My perception is Fields has a stronger arm.  Is that true?  Daniels might have more high-end speed and better acceleration.

    Thoughts?

Field passing can be very erratic, there were times (mostly early in his career) where he didn't even looked like he belongs in the league.  He has gotten better but he is just too inconsistent. After Year 3 I think most players are who they are.

He's no longer a free agent so he doesn't belong in here. And you're mistaking me trying to keep you from getting a talking to from a mod with whining.

I won't discuss Kirk anymore but it's odd that we can talk about Justin Fields but not Kirk Cousins.  Another example of why I do not understand why he is so polarizing.

Meanwhile he has left 2 teams without a QB, after they paid for more than he was ever worth, the Falcons are next and he is all about the almighty dollar.

Other than Tom Brady, who was in a unique situation, name me one professional athlete who didn't try to maximize their income in their short window of opportunity. He was just better at it than others.  For this he is hated for being smart? Not in my book.

How does a guy with slow footspeed and inability to escape traffic in the pocket run for over 1200 yards and 16 TDs in 2 seasons?

Because when he has open field in front of him he can exploit that.  But when he runs east/west he does not have the speed to reach the edge.  I saw that so many times and it was very disappointing.  He also took sacked on plays where the more athletic QB escapes.  Saw that a lot too.  I never said he had slow footspeed, just far below the others. Watch 5-6 complete fame on YouTube and you will see that as well.

Is there anyone here who thinks trading for Justin Fields is a good idea? Then trade down in the draft? I am not one of those people by the way, but I do think Fields has as much upside as say Daniels.

After 3 seasons we all know who Justin Fields is. He is a player who can offer spectacular moments but he is far too inconsistent to be counted as a franchise QB.  Next you have an expiring contract and will be forced to pay big money for a QB who is not good enough to take you to the Super Bowl.

  19.  I have been on the Maye train all along. I much prefer a pocket passer because the team that wins the Super Bowl has a really good pocket passer nearly every time.

I have been watching Maye's full games, the first few I kept trying to convince myself that he could be like Ben Rothlisberger. But after watching 6-7 games now I just don't see anything that would make me believe he will be special. He does not escape traffic in the pocket nearly as well as the more athletic QBs, his footspeed does not allow him to turn the corner on defenders. His passing is good but nothing close to elite.

I think the odds are far better that he ends up somewhere between Blake Bortels and David Carr than he ends up as an elite QB. If you are going to take a swing take a big swing on a guy who could be great, and I no longer believe that is Drake Maye.

  20. I have no idea how any fan can't be thrilled with every signing.  Allegretti had a higher PFF grade than Brandon Scherff last season. They have filled a giant hole with a solid starter at a reasonable price.  Eckeler is not washed, he is 28 (Barkley is 27) and was injured and a victim of the disaster that was San Diego last season.  He will provide more explosive plays in his first month than Gibson provided in his entire time here.  McMannus is a proven NFL kicker where Slye was far too inconsistent and that was occurring before Cheeseman started rolling snaps to the holder.  We all know the LB was a slam dunk and did provide an impact player but the rest of the signings were just good smart moves.
