  1. Well, so instead of 8 coaches, it's 6. The point still stands - the only defensive guys we've had as HC since Gibbs 1 were Schottenheimer and Rivera. And Marty was actually the best of the bunch.
  2. Sure - and Belichick and Carroll were well below .500 when they arrived in NE and SEA respectively. (To be clear, I'm not comparing Quinn to either, simply highlighting that coaches can, and often do, improve when provided second chances because they have had a chance to reflect and learn. And of course, some don't. Like Rich Kotite.)
  3. Not so sure we need an offensive coach. In the last 30 years since Gibbs 1, our coaches have mostly been from the offensive side of the ball: Norv Turner, Terry Robiskie, Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs 2, Jim Zorn, Mike Shanahan, Jay Gruden, Bill Callahan. During this period, our offences - and our teams - have stunk seven days to Sunday.
  4. Yes, of course. My point is that what fans think doesn't matter, because the vast majority base their opinions on incomplete information taken from media reports (aka, a big game of agenda-driven telephone), insider opinion and social media drivel. And not actual and tangible information generated by a real hiring process, complete with background checks, data-driven analysis of past performance across multiple roles, interviews with past peers, and the interviews themselves.
  5. Exactly this. And exactly why Quinn would not be "Rivera 2.0" if he is the hire. Strikes me as weird that the whole fan base was delirious happy that they hired Peters, having complete trust in him. And now if Peters' first decision is to actually hire Dan Quinn, they'll freak out and commit hara-kiri.

An in-demand coach decides halfway through a hiring process that he wants to stay where he is (with a known and good situation) so that, in his words, he can try to win a 'ship with his current team. People freak out and call him an ass, a beta, subservient....man. Ben Johnson simply decided this was not the time to take a HC gig for whatever reason. He let Washington & Seattle know as soon as he was sure. No harm, no foul. He didn't owe anything to anyone. More to the point, has anyone here ever been recruited by another employer and then decided to stay at their current job after one or two interviews? Happens every day, a hundred times a day. The only difference in this situation is that the NFL hiring process is somewhat public. The truth is that no one on the outside knows how any of these candidates present in interviews, what their ideas are, what their plans are for staffing, how the hiring teams rank them and most importantly how they will perform as head coaches once they get hired - whether it's their first or second crack at it. The information we get during the process is either incomplete, agent-leaked, agenda-driven, or flat-out speculation. Whether it's Quinn, McDonald, Glenn or Weaver, all we can do is trust Josh Harris and Adam Peters to hire the man who fits their vision and their requirements, and that the eventual hire, given enough time and resources, will work out. I trust they will, and that he will.
  7. Just spitballin'.... If it's Dan Quinn (who I have no problem with), the DC might be Kris Richard, who he worked with in Seattle. OC could be Darrell Bevell, who also worked in Seattle and is now under McDaniel in Miami. If it's Mike McDonald, the DC could be either Wink Martindale or Jesse Minter, both of whom worked in Baltimore. No idea who the OC could be. Josh McDaniels? Kliff Kingsbury? I can't see the HC being anyone other than those two, unless they change course and interview Mike Vrabel.
  8. Morris is with the Rams, not the Bucs. This year's numbers for the Rams defence are more reflective of a lack of talent than his coaching. All they have is Aaron Donald. He won the SB as DC with them 2 years ago. As per Peters, the team is looking for a leader of men: "He's been the same great coach that I've always known. He's a great leader. He elevates people and situations that he's a part of and I think that's the greatest sign of leadership," (Sean) McVay said about Morris. "We always talk about trying to help guys reach and realize their highest potential. I think we're seeing a lot of growth and development from a lot of people that he has an influence on."
  9. Morris was thrust into the role 13 years ago when he was young, on a Tampa team without great talent, after Gruden was fired. He probably wasn't ready for the role at age 32. Since then, he was here with the 'amazing geniuses' under Shanahan, followed Kyle to Atlanta where he spent time on both sides of the ball, and then followed McVay to LA as DC. He has a lot of experience now and is well-regarded. I would have no problem with him as HC. He would need a good OC but I'm sure he has a plan for that.

I don't think this will happen, and just spitballing here..... but if Peters truly believes the roster is complete bargain basement trash, then there may be an outside chance he takes the approach of *not* drafting the QB right away. They could trade down from #2, get a huge haul of picks for 2024 and 2025, and rebuild the lines, TE, WR and overall quality of the roster, so that when a does QB come in, they are set up for success. There would be nothing worse than drafting Williams or Maye, and having them get destroyed behind that line next year, like Howell just was. Then again, I would expect that if they do take a QB at the draft, they will at least kick Wylie inside to G and invest in a tackle, so that protection will hold up better....and that the new OC will run the damn ball more for a change.
  11. I've been saying that for years. There was about 4:47 left on the clock when Julio Jones made the ridiculous catch at the NE 22 yard line. They then lost a yard on a running play, got sacked for 12 yards, then penalized for 10 yards, pushing them back to the NE 45 yard line with 3:38 left and the score 28-20. All they had to do was run it twice more, burning clock to the 2 minute warning, or making NE burn all of their time outs, before kicking the field goal to make it 31-20. I put that more on Shanahan, not Quinn, since he was calling the plays. An 11 point lead with about 2 minutes left and NE needing not only a TD/2 pt convert, but also a FG, and not having all of their time outs would have left a very different outcome. I can never help but think what the story about NE/Belichick/Brady and their 6 titles would be if Pete Carroll and Kyle Shanahan hadn't both lost their minds in the clutch in those Super Bowls....
  12. Martindale was with Baltimore for years, with no flare-ups or character issues. In NY, there was friction between them from day one. Daboll is a guy who yells and screams during practices and games, at players, refs, everybody. And he makes it personal when someone makes a mistake. Martindale hated that, and is someone who keeps his composure. on Monday, Daboll fired two Martindale assistants before telling him. That's when Marinade cursed out Daboll and walked out of the building. I don't really blame him...
  13. Nothing wrong with Mayhew being retained. Mayhew worked with Peters in SF, has institutional knowledge, and insights on the roster - this will be very helpful to Peters, so that he can hit the ground running. My sense is that Mayhew will serve as a sounding board, since he has decades experience as a GM, as a player, a law degree, etc. Never a bad idea to keep some old staff around to provide perspective around what the thinking was in previous years. This can only help Peters as a decision maker. If it doesn't pan out after a year, then they can simply let Mayhew go.
  14. Spitballing here - if Adam Peters is hired, it would not surprise me if Martin Mayhew stayed on in some capacity. They worked together in San Fran for 4 seasons. Before you dump on the idea, Peters would be getting someone in Mayhew who is familiar to him and who knows his working style. They could hit the ground running right away. Mayhew would also provide Peters with the institutional knowledge he will need to move fast. Also, by all reports, Ron never listened to Mayhew anyway - he just made the decisions with Marty, hence all the Carolina connections who ended up here. I'm not sure too many of the bad decisions (ie - no linebackers or OL) would trace back to Mayhew. But this is me guessing...
  15. Agree 100%. Harris needs to set the tone now around how he and the new management team will run the team: with patience, calculation and purpose. And by limiting knee-jerk reactions and the bat5h1t craziness and distractions that have been our brand since 1999. This is what will resonate with potential coaching and management candidates and players this off-season. Clean house on Jan 8 morning, hold a news conference, thank everyone for their efforts, wish them the best in their new ventures, and then start interviews for the GM position.

  17. Exactly this. It has to be handled with class on Black Monday - otherwise, Harris' first move will be seen around the league by both coaches and players alike as emotion-driven and rash and potentially a continuation of the Snyder years. Give our history as an organization, the initial perception of true change has to occur at the ownership level, with this firing - that's the message that needs to be sent. And the point is to make the right move at the right time, not to fire for the sake of firing and quench the fans bloodlust.
  18. Exactly. Mike Tomlin fired Matt Canada because they want to shake things up, with an eye toward making the playoffs. We are nowhere near that situation. Whether we fire Ron and JDR now or later makes no difference at all to our season, our searches for GMs and Coaches or our future direction. The only mandates for the rest of the season at this point are seeing what the younger players can do (Henry, Martin, Butler, Jones, etc), and keeping Sam Howell upright. Then cleaning house on Monday January 8.
  19. This. Firing RR or JDR (or Martin or Marty) before the end of the season will accomplish nothing tangible. It won't change the trajectory of the season, and even if it did change something, it wouldn't matter at this point. I was entertaining the thought of keeping EB so that the new GM could potentially interview him for HC, but now I think everyone has to go. Two losses to the Giants and one to the Bears means everyone goes - this is the statement Harris needs to make. Not sure if/where Jason Wright fits into the mix or not, but Harris should be getting acquainted with his short list for GM right now. And he will - and should - wait until 9:00 a.m. Black Monday Jan 8 to gas everyone in the building. Then start the GM interviews, conclude them in a week, before having the GM reach out to the candidates for HC they want to talk to. One week process for that. One more week to hire coordinators and assistants. New era starts by the end of January 2024. Onwards and upwards to the Senior Bowl, the Underwear Olympics, free agency, the draft, etc.
  20. Spitballing here, but not sure that makes 100% sense. Harris owned 5% of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the last 3 years, so he got an inside look up close at how one of the best orgs in the league runs things. I would tend to think he would be consulting with old Steelers acquaintances before asking basketball people how he should structure the Commanders front office. And I would think these conversations would be more private.... Also - not for nothing, but Mike Kafka is a KC Chiefs guy who learned under Andy Reid. If Commanders clean house completely and EB goes, they could bring Kafka in as OC (if he's available) and have continuity with Sam Howell, since he's more than familiar with the Reid version of the WCO.
