  1. Spitballing an idea: what about trying Cosmi back out at right tackle? Hear me out. He wasn't terrific there his first two years, and also got hurt, but I'm wondering if he was simply poorly coached in his first two years. It's a tough league on rookies, and when you're poorly coached, get hurt and then lose your confidence, things can go downhill in a hurry. Cosmi did play well at RG this year, but that is probably the easiest position to fill on any line - the other four positions are more difficult. Cosmi had a good scouting report coming out of Texas....maybe he can be the solution at RT with good coaching? Anyone who knows line play chime in?
  2. What a difference a few weeks can make. 2024 Kingsbury: "We want to put players in a position where they can succeed, and not make them do things they can't do". Whitt: " We want to know about what guys CAN do, and how far can we bring them along that journey". 2020-2023 Rivera: "We want position versatility".
  3. That's exactly it. They bring institutional knowledge that Peters needs to move forward with in the short term (between now and training camp). They may or may not be retained in the medium or long term - and whether or not they stay is kind of immaterial to the fanbase, since they're not decision makers. They may have input, but no decision-making power. If they are deemed to be needed past the draft, they stay, if not, they go. My sense is that Mayhew will stay, since he worked with both Peters in SF and Newmark in Det.
  4. So, it looks like the only coaches on the Rivera staff that made the cut were Tavita Pritchard, Bobby Engram and Ryan Kerrigan (although maybe there's a chance that Ben Jacobs makes it?). This is definitely a housecleaning. PS - wouldn't it be something if Eric Bieniemy replaced Anthony Lynn in San Fran as RB coach/Asst HC...
  5. More on the Air Raid: https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/college/uw/2022/12/08/what-does-air-raid-offense-mean-if-its-indeed-coming-to-wisconsin/69712146007/
  6. Bobby Johnson's lines in Buffalo were actually pretty good: 2019 Buffalo: 40 Sacks allowed #15 2020 Buffalo: 27 Sacks allowed #9 2021 Buffalo: 27 Sacks allowed #2 If he can replicate those results, we are in business. You bring up a good point: if the blocking concepts and techniques are different in the Air Raid....does this mean we would need a different type of lineman (ie - quicker and more athletic, but maybe a little smaller?) If yes, that's good timing, since we need 3 new starters anyway at centre and the two tackles. Stromberg could fit as the C. And Andrew Wylie could actually fit in at LG. https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2019/05/24/andy-reid-considers-andrew-wylie-one-of-chiefs-better-athletes/
  7. John Pagano (if true) looks like a quality add on the defensive side. Looks like he would coach linebackers. But Bobby Johnson? His lines stunk in New York: 2022 NYG: 49 Sacks allowed #28 2023 NYG: 85 Sacks allowed #32 Then again, Buffalo did have a good line while he was there: 2019 Buffalo: 40 Sacks allowed #15 2020 Buffalo: 27 Sacks allowed #9 2021 Buffalo: 27 Sacks allowed #2 And Eric Wood, one of his former players, a Pro Bowl Center seems to have liked him: https://twitter.com/EWood70/status/1085285525651685376. I hope this is a case of Brian Daboll micro-managing Johnson and screwing him up. But otherwise, I'm wondering who else was interviewed and was available. What happened to Cole Popovich, who was liked by both Belichick and Scarnecchia?
  8. Anyone seriously think that Ben "Roids" Johnson or Mike "Doobie Brothers" Macdonald could have assembled such an impressive staff so quickly? Seems like there are more levels to a head coaching hire than being a trendy young coordinator, or being the last guy to have coffee with Shanahan or McVay.
  9. I actually thought that Richard would have been already announced as the pick for DB coach, given their time in Seattle - and he's an easy get since he was out of the league last season. Maybe they will go with: - Jason Simmons, Defensive passing game coordinator - Mike Adams, Safeties - Kris Richard, Cornerbacks That's a lot of coaches. But I would do it....you can never have enough quality, and you never know when one of them will get poached. Or, maybe he doesn't want to bring Richards in at all.
  10. Understand you're not being critical, and not targeting you or your post, but IMO I didn't think Peters came across as nervous. He smiled and his body language was fine. As a GM, he doesn't need to come across as Norman Schwartzkopf - and it wouldn't appear to be genuine if he did. He was measured and cool, like a GM should be IMO. Also, he had less to say since it was Quinn's presser, not his. As a GM, he needs to watch what he says to the media - IMO the less he says publicly, the better, for competitive reasons.
  11. Joe Whitt is undeserving of a promotion and a role on this coaching staff because he's worked with Dan Quinn for 4 years and he's not "innovative" enough? a.) How do you know he's not innovative? b.) Which available defensive coordinator candidate is more innovative? c.) Are NFL coordinators hired strictly because they are "innovative"? d.) What does "innovative" mean in this context? e.) Should head coaches hire their coordinators from a pool of people they've never worked with? Inquiring minds want to know...
  12. Forbes does have a good contact, and I do hope he improves. I just have the AJ Brown and DJ Moore games burned in my brain. Man, I wish we had drafted Deonte Banks instead. Agreed the coaching staff was a liability last year. Ron brought his mediocre crew from the Panthers over, and never changed a thing in 4 years, except to fire Turner, Mills & Matsko, and let Harris walk, while replacing them with worse coaches. I would resign Fuller - we have the money - but I'm thinking he might walk.
  13. EDITED to include Kingsbury being OC Logan Paulsen and many others have said that on every team there are probably 5 players who are scheme agnostic, and could play on any team in the NFL. Which means, the majority of the roster is comprised of players who are schematic fits. When there is a coaching change, the schemes change, roles change and player usage changes. With Quinn now HC and Kingsbury at OC, which players on the current roster could assume larger roles, or be better used in ways that maximize what they do? Which players on the current roster are not fits moving forward? Understand that this is a dartboarding exercise, but let's assume that the defensive scheme will be the same as what Quinn has run the last three years, tweaked a little. Let's assume Kingsbury will run what he ran in Arizona, slightly tweaked. My picks for players whose stock could rise by being used more effectively and/or coached better: - Brian Robinson (Kingsbury likes versatile RBs) - Antonio Gibson (Kingsbury likes versatile RBs) - Jahan Dotson (should rebound next year) - Jamin Davis (likely to be put into a role he can succeed at) - Quan Martin (the new Earl Thomas?) - Benjamin St Juste (Quinn likes bigger corners) - Jon Allen (will be motivated in the new scheme) - Daron Payne (ditto - will be motivated in the new scheme) My picks for players on their way out: - Logan Thomas (the offence needs a good TE and he's had one good year) - Emmanuel Forbes (hate to say it, but I don't think he'll make it...Quinn likes bigger dbs) - Khaleke Hudson (might not have a consistent role in this scheme, and he's a UFA) - David Mayo (Quinn will look at the tape and say 'forget it') - Cody Barton (Ditto) - Kendall Fuller (not because he doesn't fit, but because he's a UFA, will be 29 and will probably want to max out his money in March).
  14. That was more about sequence - it's more like Falcons planned to hire Quinn, Quinn wanted Shanahan, so they inked Shanahan first to take him off the market while Quinn was still coaching in the playoffs / Super Bowl: https://www.nfl.com/news/atlanta-falcons-plan-to-hire-dan-quinn-kyle-shanahan-0ap3000000459983
  15. Not true. Quinn was part of the hiring cycle the last three years: 2022: Interviews with NY Giants, Chicago, Jacksonville, Miami, Minnesota and Denver, decided to stay in Dallas 2023: Interviews with Arizona, Denver and Indianapolis, decided to stay in Dallas 2024: Interviews with Carolina, LA Chargers, Seahawks, Tennessee and here, before accepting the gig He has been very much in demand. And Ben Johnson is not the only guy who decided to stay put after going through the process twice.
  16. Quinn resurrected the worst defence in the league in 2020, to make it one of the best. The fact that he hired Shanahan, Lafleur, Morris, McDaniel, Sarkisian, Koetter and others in the first place means he CAN recognize coaching talent. The fact that he took Ryan and his team to the SB means he has proven he CAN get there (unlike some others). John Schneider hired McDonald because they are trying to get away from Pete Carroll's influence. Hiring Quinn (who is close with Carroll) would have effectively meant more of the same influences, since both would be in the same building (how many meetings would Pete be in?). Schneider wanted a complete break because he wants HIS influence to prevail, given his newly-acquired control in the org. It's a lot easier to exercise influence with a young first-time coach who owes you his job. Instead of someone who hired you. The bottom line: coaches who have coached with Quinn and players who have played for Quinn all rave about his work and leadership. Respect from peers is a huge indicator of someone's quality.
  17. Belichick ( 36–44) and Carroll (33-31) were both .500 or less coaches when they were hired at NE and SEA respectively. There's no way of knowing.
  18. Of the available candidates from the offensive side of the ball this cycle, Johnson and Slowik both decided to return to their current teams. Harbaugh, Callahan and Canales were not on our short list for various reasons. There's really no one left from the offence - and no one we could have hired except maybe Callahan? We can't force an offensive guy in to be the hire at HC at this point just because of a trend. We have to hire the best guy available *right now*. Unless you want Eric Bieniemy .... ?
