Yeah but he hardly played when Wentz was there. Last season was the only season he has had so far when he was healthy and at least somewhat productive. He was their number two behind Pittman.

    That is fair.

Ironically, he got year 2 starter Brissett (after a year off and Luck starting)

    The Ghost of Philip Rivers

    The Remnants of Wentz

    The Ghost of Matt Ryan

Certainly health is an issue, but there are reasons for lesser numbers when he was on the field.  I think he could make a case that there is more to be seen.

Just surprised...we not gonna get our annual 3rd rd compensation pick letting our good players walk. What a sad day.

I feel like it's actually every other year.

    edit:

only 3 out of 10 years we get any picks, so not even every other.

    2023- 3rd (Scherff) and 6th (Settle)

2022- gained 1 more than lost (no picks)

2021- gained 4 more than lost (no picks)

    2020- 4th (Crowder)

    2019- 3rd (Cousins), 5th (Trent Murphy), 6th (Ryan Grant), 7th (Niles Paul)

2018- gained 1 more than lost (no picks)

2017- gained 1 more than lost (no picks)

    2016- even (no picks)

2015- gained 4 more than lost (no picks)

2014- gained 1 more than lost (no picks)

ian Rappaport reported 6.5 mil total guaranteed. Not per year

First year they have 6.32 mill guaranteed,  He'll get to 7 mill if he plays the year.  The second year there is an easy out of 2 mill dead.  So it's a good shot at 1/7 (so still likely 7 mill per....just for 1).

It's a lot of money, right now its being played up as the 2nd highest DT contract but the devil is always in the details, how much if any of it is in incentives, etc.  There is also different types of guaranteed money, forgot the term, but some types are due right away and other types are not.

But one of the main values of getting a deal done in FA is to help the cap and Rivera is in a win now year IMO.

Keim's next podcast should be interesting.  He did say they wanted a LTC with Payne many times.  But he also is firm that he doesn't believe they are going to sign a big FA, he thinks a few mid tier types but he also said he will share if that info has changed as FA approaches.

Keim isn't perfect as for info but he's usually pretty close.

I generally do a bit more offseason studying and make a list of what I would do and just didn't amp myself up this year trying to limit disappointment.  I must say this does make me wonder if it will be a bit better than expected.  Maybe players are also excited about the sale as well.

What am interested in is to see how that contract is staggered cap wise, if its a low cap hit in year 1 it could mean good things for another signing.

Allen's 4/72, started at 8 mill hit (a bit less than half the average per year of the deal).

I don't see Rivera changing the approach that much and would expect 10-12ish for a 7-9mill savings.

Carr's cap hit this year is only $7mil:

    2023: $7.2 mil

    2024: $35.7 mil

    2025: $45.7 mil

    2026: $55.7 mil

    2027: $5.7 mil

Salary cap is essentially meaningless.... though Saints will eventually pay for it down the line.

They were 7-10 last year, are still 25 mill over the cap, don't have a 1st round pick.  They have a few shiny toys, but they are paying for it right now to a degree.  Carr could help them win in a terrible division, but that's a pretty low bar.

Even in that case, they are paying their starting QB about the same as the Saints are paying Carr. $37M or so.

Ultimately, he's about a third of what some of these other QBs are asking for and he made the playoffs and won a game.

Would Jones be as valuable to someone else? Probably not. But if you're the Giants, at this point, why risk it?

They likely had to keep him,  won't argue that.   But I don't see them winning deep playoff games with the resulting team around him.   It's a weird position to be in and as teams make these decisions I think there isn't always a good answer.

Edit:  I also question the team the saints will have around carr.

    There was talk.

It’s not actually a 160M deal. The key to looking at contracts is finding out how many years in that there is an “out” and guaranteed money.

Jones deal is essentially 2 years $82M but realistically it’s 3 years 82 mil. If they got out after two years it’s an 18M dead cap hit.

If they wait until after 3 the 4th year is only a $9M hit.

So you could say it’s 3 years, 82M. Essentially $27.3M/year.

Year 2 cap hit is $45M. They can take that hit or they can extend and add more guaranteed cash to lessen that hit and push it out.

    Well according to the notes

12M of 2025 salary fully guarantees in March 2024

So once that triggers the 3rd year switches to 30 million dead if they cut.   I agree he won't see year 4, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a 3yr, 112.5mill deal unless they take some pain year 3.

So if argue is 37.5 mill per year over 3 years.  Since the won't cut year 2, they would trigger the 12 mill and it could be 94 mill over 3 or 31.3 mill per I suppose.

IIRC a lot of Blue Origin folks were brought (or bought) from old space companies, and brought the old space "take as long as you can, as long as you get paid" work culture with them. Bezos is less than happy about it, given the pace of development at SpaceX, but it is literally rocket science so his options are limited.

Yeah, not apples to apples with Amazon, but neither is a sports franchise.  At least with players, scouts, coaches.  But some office positions/sales could be closer.

    Thanks.

He could be a big spender here.  I get the point that some push on that front.  He is obviously insanely rich.   But there is some devil advocate push back to that point.  My gut is he wouldn't be cheap running this franchise.  But I don't think its slam dunk.

Harris from what some have said does like to spend well on facilites-trappings for players.  Maybe Bezos does the same.  I do agree that Bezos is probably the best shot at getting the stadium in DC.

Are there similar stories about Blue Origin company?

I feel like a football team would be treated more like a pet project than the bread winner.   So I think how he treats that might be a closer comparison.
