  1. DL showed up a little bit in the second half as they were getting punked and they do care about their reps to an extent but when you get paid or have been paid, that play every down or eye of the tiger seems to go out the window.  Over hyped for sure.

  2. Well, the non-PI call didn't chafe me as much after Howell hit McLaurin the play after and they were pretty much in the same position but the non-grounding call?  That was a big one as the next play or two they score.  The grounding call would have put them so far back, long FG, 4 point difference or possibly 7 if the miss.  Probably if, ands and buts at that point as I don't think they would have won anyway given the vibe of the team but definitely pivotal at that point and time.

  3. We have watched enough sports to know that sometimes heart, guts and just shear want to can trump talent.

However, we also have watched enough sports to know when a team is mentally weak, lacks leadership and has no sense of urgency or accountability.

I don’t think that first half blitz occurs with a London Fletcher in the locker room.

To lose to a team with no DC, a practice squad secondary and decimated O line, well, Josh Harris should write a Jimmy Fallon style thank you note to Ron.

Thank you Ron.  For making my job easier as I don’t have to pine over a decision to whether to keep this regime in tact.

  4. A scared, desperate team and coach is always a scary thing...if the Commanders are not up for this one and match the intensity, it could become unnerving quickly.  Get on this team and get on them quick. If you let them hang around it will bite you.

    We have seen this before.

Commanders locker room needs to be convinced, they are just as desperate and playing for their season also.  Do you really want to dwell with the Giants?

Get fired up, strike fast and don't take your foot off the gas.  I am glad this is a home game.

    Commanders - 27

    Bears - 13

  5. Thanks again for writing these up Kleese.

I made it to the Superdome in Marty's next to last game in 2001 where they were down 10-0 to the Saints and came back to win 40-10.  Saints fans were giving us hell when they were up 10-0 so when they started heading to the exits in the 3rd quarter, I was like, hey, where ya goin?  They replied, we are Saints' fans, we are used to this. I do remember the Super Dome smelling like urine everywhere, it had like carpet all over the place back then so can only assume all the drunken NFL games, Sugar Bowls etc. where people just let it flow.

Funny thing about losing to the Crows in OT, I thought about the 82 opener where Washington won 37-34 to begin the glory years and even though this was a loss and we don't have Joe Gibbs, I was so bolstered that they showed up, Howell looks like the real deal and they actually drove down and scored a TD while time expired.  Maybe it's just the owner change that's got me feeling all nostalgic but I could not help but think, that's not a bad loss.

Na that was the biggest example of QB making his OL look worse. He played behind Chris Samuel, Jon Jansen, Randy Thomas, and Derrick Dockery. That OL was rock solid at worst and top 5 at best.

True, I didn't even go to look up the line so just trying to be funny there as I remember him getting sacked a ton.  I would take that line in a heartbeat today.

  7. Thanks for these kleese, really cool to go back in the archives and sometimes remember a game or two that way.  I thought maybe in 91 when the Skins were on the march that the Dallas game was 35-33 but checked and saw it was 33-31.

What amazes me is that a franchise that has been around since 37 does not have game they won with a score 35-27.  That's not that oddball a score.  Hmmm, maybe we are just that oddball a franchise.

What scares me the most would be if we needed a FG to win and get the opportunity at clutch time (well, we do have an all-pro holder which helps).

Every FG we have lined up for this year I picture Manu from Necessary Roughness trying to snap the ball to Paul Blake holding for Lucy (Kathy Ireland) during her kicking tryout.  Ball just rolls back there.

  9. So many things, a different game and era when a lot of us were growing up, before free agency.  You knew you could build a team and keep the core without the threat of a rebuild possible every year.

    I miss Joe Gibbs.

    I miss competency.

I will never forget those teams from 77 on that I watched, lived and died on every snap.  Cried losing to the Cowboys in 79 and just missing the playoffs.  Cheered and lit off fireworks when Riggo took it to the house against the Dolphins.  Ran out of fireworks in the 2nd quarter of Super Bowl 22.

I miss the quiet confidence I had when at the beginning of 1991 season watching them trounce the Lions 45-0 while I was a freshman at VCU and turned to Art (yes the Art from here) and the other guys in my apartment that night watching the game, after Brian Mitchell lept into the endzone and said, this team is winning the Super Bowl.

I wonder if I will ever get to experience that same passion again, I doubt it as age, incompetence and rebranding have taken its toll.

  10. I know it's nostalgic but to have that camera shot looking out on to the National Mall with the large flag with whatever the new name will be fluttering in the right side of the pic, I can almost hear Brent Musburger's voice saying "You are looking live at..."

    Make it happen.
