LB: Davis and Holcomb
Grade: Average. Davis is improving, Holcomb is the definition of average.
I have to respectfully disagree re: Davis and Holcomb. They are not average. Holcomb is a borderline backup to me in this league--certainly not a starter. His awareness is poor, he has significant physical limitations and because his awareness and recognition are so poor, he's always a step beyond and is constantly getting manhandled out of the way; he's the number one reason why our rush defense has been awful. Davis has some skills but at this stage, he should essentially be a 3rd down package LB and not an every down LB. He also at times looks totally lost out there.
Essentially, because our LB unit is so terrible, it's as though we are playing defense with 9 guys. Sadly, this is not a new development and yet for reasons which I find completely inexplicable, we decided not to upgrade an absolutely glaring weakness on the roster. This weakness combined with JDR's awful scheme and completely predictable defense which doesn't even attempt to disguise coverages or blitzes or play to our strengths as a unit, will put a ceiling on our wins of about 7.
It's a real shame too because if we had even a medicore defense that played with some aggression, we would be a playoff team.

That blitz on 3rd and 15 brought back memories of Jim Haslett on Monday Night against the Cowboys in 2011. 3rd and 21.
JDL and Haslett are very similar. Both were incredibly mediocre head coaches and awful coordinators. I mean we’ve had some really bad defensive coordinators over the last 30 years. I used to think Greg Blache was the worst, but Del Rio is on a whole different level of suck. He’s like 5 standard deviations away from the next most awful coordinator we’ve ever had. -
I'm sorry but it starts and ends with coaching. Everything we are doing wrong can be tied directly to coaching. This was one of the most poorly coached performances I've ever seen. It laid bare for me how truly awful our staff is, from Rivera on down. JDL is an absolute disgrace. Dude should have been canned last season. Norv Turner...sorry, Scott Turner, is a just like his old man: moments of promise surrounded by long spells of absolutely atrocious in game play calling. And Rivera is just clueless. Clueless on personnel and clueless on coaching. This is not a guy who should have final say over anything, let alone everything. All these teams that have been awful for long stretches--the lions, Jax, detroit, bengals, miami, the freakin giants, are all turning it around, but the commodores or the commanders or whatever stupid name we have, we are just stuck in neutral forever and ever.

Watching our defense is like watching 3 different units, dl, lb, db, running 3 different schemes simultaneously. It’s like the groups never sit in a film room or practice together.
Nothing defensively is in sync. We’re not disrupting. We’re not aggressive. We’re not penetrating. There is no unit right now. The defense is totally floundering and injuries are beginning to add up.How does this get fixed?….chase won’t be the answer. Another linebacker isn’t walking thru the door this year. Our thin dl took some lumps today (did Allen even play?). The only saving grace for the dbs will ultimately be a defense that relentlessly pressures the qb. we are absolutely not doing that right now even though we have the individual ability to do so. That’s coaching.
JDRs stubborn approach to defensive scheme has failed the individual talent on the defense. He doesn’t call a game to our strengths. He calls a game hoping the other teams offense stumbles and fumbles their way thru a game. He doesn’t coach aggression. He doesn’t coach cohesion. And he certainly doesn’t tailor his scheme around the talent.
RR has to fire his buddy. Then he needs to set a fire underneath the defense. RR should be calling the entire D to the carpet tomorrow and tell them it’s time to do it different.
what a fantastic post! All of it is true and hard to watch live. JDR failed as a head coach and he’s failed repeatedly as a coordinator. The defense has already quit on him. They know they aren’t being put in a position to succeed. This team needs a new coaching staff badly at this point.- 1

Bad defense. JDR should be released this week. Why would you not release him, it honestly could not be worse. You can't blame Wentz here, though some fans will.
the offense gave us a chance the second half. The defense has been atrocious all season and last season. Just awful at every level. Rivera might be too dumb to see that del Rio needs to go.- 1

So, for end-of-game management:
1. Don't chase points, take the EP.
2. Don't miss an EP.
3. Score before the 2 minute warning so you have the extra TO on defense.
awful awful coaching on both sides of the ball this entire game. Ron ain’t it and neither are any of these coordinators.- 1

OL hasn't opened a hole up the middle all game so let's do that twice with the game on the line. Gibson is running into a wall of bodies.
Turner is such a jackass. At least spread it out if you’re going to run it up the middle.- 1

Crying mine. When you blitz I feel like you gotta pickup the hot back peeling out
So much wrong on that play. The lack of disguise on the blitz; failure to cover the back.

This should be a wake up call for anyone who things we have the talent on defense or the coaching staff to be competitive consistently in this league. I think we have low IQ coaches and it shows. Going to be a long and painful season. Totally inexplicable game plan on offense. Just don’t understand what the logic could be there. It’s hard to watch.

They STILL won't go hurry up. I mean, come on. You're down 3 scores, every single ****ing drive from here on out should be no-huddle.
Somebody used the word "plodding" earlier. I think that's exactly right.
Turner thought he could run the ball to loosen up the defense. He was wrong.
Turner isnt good. He has moments but overall he's just not up to par. He really has no in game feel. This is a game where we should be passing to set up the run, not the other way around. We should be using gibson to the way we did last week but he wants to run him between the tackles. Just awful awful gameplan and playcalling and there's no excuse for it with the skill players we have. Just none.

Of course St. Juste doesn’t catch it. This defense doesn’t do turnovers
It's so true. It's like they are completely allergic to them.

Time for a QB switch
Can't do that at this stage in the season.

Lions probably march on down for another score.
Of course they do. We can't get into a hole like this with this defense. Del Rio needs to be fired at halftime. The players coaching themselves would look better. How we could go into this season with Cole Holcomb as our starter is beyond me.

GO ****ING HURRY UP!
Yeah this is my problem with Turner--he's like a deer in the headlights sometimes. What are we doing with these calls. Just awful awful gameplan.

We do need to put Del Rio out of his misery. This defense is just atrocious on every level--scheme and matchups. Del Rio is just too stupid to be a defensive coordinator in this league.

Not sure how we can support this coaching staff when we are witnessing his kind of thing in year 3 of a system.

I genuinely don’t believe in a knee jerk reaction guy, I just can’t see why we wouldn’t fire JDR it’s actually hilarious how he’s wasting our drafted talent
We don’t have talent on defense but our scheme is worse.

Turner was a bigger issue than Wentz on the picks. Stop with the dink and dunk ****. Zampese did cartwheels when we got Wentz because of his gd arm. So let him uncork.
Sorry, Wentz made 1 bad INT. The second he should have held, but that was a terrible playcall.
They have to keep their foot on the gas. This coaching staff has to learn to win.
we have an awful coaching staff. I can’t wait until Turner and del Rio are gone. -
I can’t with Scott Turner. I just can’t.

Drives me insane. Football is not baseball. The baseball-ification of football is a terrible, terrible trend. There are too many variables in football to make these analytics work in situations like what we saw on Sunday. The only thing to do that day given the momentum of the game was to kick the XP. That was it.
