Coming from PFF, that says something! :)

Makes me wonder if players are using Carolina as a big payday while they can.

I feel sorry for the Carolina fans but I'm happy that the curse has lifted from this team.

Matt Miller's 2nd round.  I like both picks for us but no way I'd skip over Kool-aid.  Looking at that configuring, I'd trade down if I can add an extra 3rd.

    36. Washington Commanders

    Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri

Washington needs an impact defensive end who can take over games after trading away Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the 2023 trade deadline. At 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, Robinson can rush from the edge or play inside. He had nine sacks in his breakout 2023 season.

    40. Washington Commanders (via CHI)

    Patrick Paul, OT, Houston

Paul has legendary wingspan at 86¼ inches and enough speed at 6-foot-7 and 331 pounds to run a 5.13 in the 40-yard dash. He is raw, but NFL offensive line coaches I've talked to are in love with his tools and want a chance to develop his traits into a high-end starter.

    67. Washington Commanders

    Adisa Isaac, DE, Penn State

Washington needs bodies to replace Montez Sweat and Chase Young. Isaac's first-step quickness and burst pair perfectly with the power of Darius Robinson, who we projected to Washington in Round 2 of this mock draft.

I don't like the idea of selected two DEs with the first three picks (after QB).  Is Patrick Paul OT really worth the #40 pick if he's that raw?  I'd rather go CB because the ones selected after 40 may not be there in a trade down.  For that matter, the WRs might be picked clean.

He has mentioned that in at least 4 separate podcasts from my count. He has said that Forbes "needs to put in the work" to be a good corner. He backed down slightly after the 3rd time he said that and stated that he hasn't heard from anyone with the team that Forbes hasn't been putting in the work...but I think we know Keim well enough to know he didn't just create that on his own.

Forbes was a draft mistake, but Rivera made many of those.  Forget about the round that he was drafted.  How can he be used to benefit the team?  If the answer is nowhere then he should be traded for a 6th or 7th round pick if possible.  I'd try him at FS because that's the only position that I think the team can take advantage of his ball hawk skills.  He's too skinny to play SS.  I don't think he's suited to CB and he's not going to be durable enough to be a full-time special teamer. Fortunately, the team is likely to be in the position to draft another CB.

I recognize that downgrading a 1st round draft pick from CB to FS is not a popular idea.  But, what does Forbes do well?

Expensive vet WRs might be a better idea for the Commanders in year 3.  The new QB hopefully will have matured by then and can take advantage of the premiere WR's skill-set.  Let's pick a WR in this deep draft.

  5. Most stories, from now until the draft, are going to be click bait.  Just wild speculation to keep everyone interested.  The NFL loves it.  But most of it is silly.  Ten teams wind up picking the same players.  There's a mock where the Commanders trade up to the first round using #36 plus 2 other picks just to get a CB.  Not an OT!  The team that acquired the #36 pick then selects Chop Robinson.  That's the danger of trading up with that #36 pick. Someone will fall to 36 even if it's not our most coveted position.  Maybe Ladd McConkey....not a bad consolation prize.

  6. Many mocks are showing a heavy run-on OTs in the first round.  Every team is going to believe that the Commanders will pick an OT at 36 if one is still available.  Picks 33-35 are going to be critical (including trades).  Pro-football Network has us selecting Edge and CB.  It may be good in the long-term but I'm going to be initially disappointed.

Yes, yes they are--and the callers are worse.

The last thing we need is for the choice of draft picks or free agents to be influenced by a desire to reinvigorate the fan base.  That approach smacks of the prior ownership group.

I know most of us want a QB at #2 buuuuuuut do you feel like there is absolutely nothing that would change your mind?

Peters will listen to trade offers and compare the trade value to his evaluation of the top 2 QBs available this year.  We don't know what he really thinks of these QBs.  The media talking heads need to fill time.  I saw one idea floated where the Vikings put all of their chips in for a top QB.  2 firsts this year plus a bunch of high picks next year.  It can be fun to speculate but really I want the offer and to identify the players that could be picked from the trade.  Right now I'm betting we take the QB at 2

  9. MSN just had a ranking of the best player selected by each team in the 2023 draft.  Our "best" was 6th round Chris Rodriguez RB who played sparingly during the year.  I'm not knocking Rodriguez, but that's a sad indictment on talent selection.  We may not be able to get the particular players we want, or specific positions filled, but talent wins out in the end. Fingers cross that Peters knocks one out of the park for his first draft.  I really don't want to give up any picks in this draft.

  10. Right now, it seems that the team can potentially land as many as five future starters with these picks.  But only if they don't trade them away to move up in the draft. So many options if we give up on the dream of an immediate starter at LT.  We need a free agent who can hold down the fort in the near term and perhaps become the future swing tackle.  I'm coming around to the BPA philosophy (within reason).

    Second Round

    No. 36, 40

    Third Round

    No. 67, 78, 100

Yeah 36 + 67 will probably get us to somewhere around 23. That'd be the sweet spot because I think from 24 on you're gonna see a big time run on OTs.

The other sweet spot would be Detroit at 29. 36 + 100 should get it done(maybe we throw in our 7th).

At #29, I think all of the preferred OTs may already have been taken.  At 23-24, there may already have been a good run on OTs.  If I was a team with a first pick mid round 1, I would value an OT more highly than a CB given the depth at CB.

I think we are more likely to have a wide choice of iOL and the second tier of OL.

It's crazy that we can draft 5 guys on day two and not expect all of them to be instant impact guys. Our roster is going to get deep immediately.

Peters isn't afraid to move around in the draft as we have seen with the Howell trade and SF's past history.  I like the moves in the 3rd round to be better positioned to pick the highest value in 2024.  Considering the depth at certain positions, picks 36, 40, 67, 78, and 100 are going to be interesting.  My guess is that bpa will mean a WR and CB somewhere in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.  Probably iOL.  We are all anxious about OT.  If it doesn't work out as we hope, perhaps year 1 of the rebuild will involve 2TE sets quite often.

With what playing time leftover? Davis, Luvu, Chinn, Wagner. That's 4 guys getting snaps as either starters or in various sub packages when the standard number of LB's on the field is 2. (I know I'm counting Chinn, who will also get some time at SS, but still)

Rivera often used only two LBs and it failed miserably.  I don't think that's going to be the plan going forward.

You people and steak are ridiculous. I like my well done, but I don't get that at a restaurant, I go med well. I think its funny that so many of you get up, get dressed, drive out to a restaurant and pay full price for a raw steak, uncooked steak. I've worked in a restaurant, seen every crazy food combo there is, but people get weird over steaks.

Rare is not raw.  If you like your steak well done....you don't like steak.

What is Peters cooking up today?  The remake is happening before our eyes but each free agent signing is becoming a dopamine fix for fans.

  15. It's fairly likely that a first round OT slips to the top of the second round.  But, every team will know that the Commanders need one.  The cost to jump ahead of us and select the last OT is a small price to pay.  I don't want Peters to trade up into the first round though.  The cost in lost players is too high.

As for position flex, Chinn is a safety-LB type. Big nickle, too.   As a college player, played with a ton of energy-all over the field.   One of the most fun watches for me over the years of SS types.

Up and down career so far.  But i like his chances working with good defensive coaches like this team has now.

Hmmm.  Where will Quan Martin fit in?

He was never top 10. He was league leader in passing yards because of insane # of pass attempts. He wasn't efficient or playing at a high level. Advanced metrics had him somewhere in the low 20s all year.

So....he was a starter quality QB his very first year of starting?

2024 NFL mock draft: Reid's pick predictions in Rounds 1-2

    2. Washington Commanders

    Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

It's widely known that Washington will select a QB if it stays put at No. 2, but which one? I elected to go with Maye, as his prior experience in an Air Raid-style offense, his size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds) and ability to drive the ball downfield gives him the edge over LSU's Jayden Daniels. The learning curve might not be as steep for him in Kliff Kingsbury's offense, and there is a lot of upside here with him throwing to receivers Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson.

    36. Washington Commanders

    Graham Barton, C/G, Duke

The Commanders -- who allowed 65 sacks in 2023, tied for the second-most in the NFL -- could need as many as three new starters along the offensive line. Barton is a plug-and-play option along the interior and even has experience at tackle.

    40. Washington Commanders (via CHI)

    Adisa Isaac, EDGE, Penn State

Losing both Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the trade deadline last October left the Commanders with mostly rotational and depth players off the edge. Isaac has the potential to be a dependable starter. He is explosive and has good bend around the corner.

Ten OL and eight WR picked before #36.  What do you think of Barton and Isaac?  Which, if any, of the other players selected in the second round would you have preferred?

I think it was you SIP who stated a few days ago that perhaps more QBs end up going in the 1st than originally projected which helps push some of the LTs down. Can only hope.

I'm not optimistic about the LTs being pushed down.  If another team needs a tackle and a WR, I'd take the tackle and roll the dice on the WR late in the second round.  I'm guessing some of the first round WR slip (more so than the tackles).

I cant see Peters gambling that a day 1 starter LT would fall to #36.  I think we will get a free agent LT and he will draft a tackle to slot in at Guard for experience.  Later, the draftee could move over to Tackle or serve as the swing tackle while other players are the backup Guards.

I still like Darius Robinson at 36 though.  And I wouldn't mind swinging for the fences on edges twice and drafting both Robinson and Booker.

So, we pick a QB at #2 and then spend 2 out of the next three picks on DEs?  It seems like an over-investment at one position when there will probably be other positions available at similar grades.  I recognize that if you pass on Robinson at #36 or #40, you might find that some other team picks Booker before #67.

    PROJECTED TRADE WITH RAVENS

The Commanders have plenty of draft capital this year, and they use some of it to slip up into the first round for a cornerback who is big, fast and physical, with the toughness to move to safety if the scheme calls for it.

Hmm.  Will it cost pick 36 and pick 103 to get pick 30?  We are more likely to get our preferred OT with 36 than 40 so I'm not sure I want to give up the first second round pick. Pick 103 is likely to be a good BPA (position unknown).
