Star-Ledger: Cowboys sign DT Jason Ferguson

I think the biggest point here is that nobody knows if the new scheme Dallas intends to implement will be successful. You can hope, expect, project ... but you can't know. All we KNOW right now is that a three-time pro bowl LB is a bad fit, and new players need to be signed for that defense to have a chance of success.

For our part, we KNOW our defensive scheme kicks serious butt. We know that we can lose significant playing time from multpile linebackers, safeties, defensive linemen and even corners to injury and STILL put together a great defense.

So Dallas fans can talk about upgrades all they want. But new signings aren't necessarily upgrades for your defense. They might simply be needed pieces to an incomplete puzzle.

This recent signing is a good one, but noone has any idea whether it will improve Dallas defense relative to last year under a completely different scheme. I'm not sure bragging is in order just yet.

ok, here is another one.

Can anybody confirm this signing happened? Its not on the Dallas site, you'd think it would be by now.

What if the Jets come strong with a big bonus? then what?

Then Dallas is pretty much screwed, Buff.

I guess this is what happens when you put all your eggs into a Parcells Guy's basket.

Henry:

Having the #1 ranked defense last year is not exactly indicative of how good your unit is going to be this year.

Ask the Cowboys.

We fielded basically the same unit minus Mario Edwards, a couple of defensive tackles and Woodson and we were one of the worst in team history.

If you guys lose Pierce and Smoot, you might be in the same boat.

Our chemistry was destroyed by Woodson's injury, Parcells cutting two of our tackle rotation and some bad RCB player.

You guys are not assured of fielding a unit in 2005 that compares to the outstanding chemistry you guys had last season.

Gregg Williams is good, but you never know.

In a move that could signal the team’s switch to a base 3-4 defense, the Cowboys appear on the verge of signing Jets NT Jason Ferguson — an anchor who has played over the center and was a member of current Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells’ first draft with the Jets in 1997. Ferguson was the 18th DT selected in the ’97 draft and has been a rock in the middle of the Jets’ defense ever since. The Cowboys’ personnel now appears a better fit for a 3-4 alignment with a true nose tackle in Ferguson and potential ends in La’Roi Glover and Greg Ellis, who might be a better fit as a Greg Lloyd-like outside rusher. The team also is working on signing DT Leo Carson to an extension; Carson might be better-suited to line up in a five-technique than Ellis, who weighs about 275 pounds and is more of a true one-gap end. The Jets badly wanted Ferguson back and might now turn their attention to the Bills’ Pat Williams. The Ferguson signing is expected to be announced in the next day or two.
