Buying a Guitar Amp

Recommended Posts

hey everyone, earlier I posted a thread on info for how to buy a guitar, a lot of you were really helpful then. I havent bought one yet, but I have a few Ibanez models in mind. Now I am looking for a cheap amp of good quality.

Does anyone know whats a good amp to buy and where? I only wanted to spend 50$ or less, but now I see my budget may have to go up to 100$. I was thinking of some Marshall amps, 10 and 15 watts, the MG 10 or something. I also saw this on ebay, seems pretty sketch though:

anyways, your help will be appreciated, thanks everyone.

EDIT: haha, im liking these google ads right about now.

I'd pass on that e-bay one. It looks like crap and I've never heard of that company.

This is the best practice amp in that price range IMO.

You can find some sound clips and specs here.

My brother (who is a drummer) has the Cube 15 to goof around on when he picks up a guitar and it flat out rocks. Keep it mind you are not going to level walls with it and it will not be loud enough to keep up with a drummer. For what it is it's real nice. At under $100 the pickin's are mighty slim.

Hey S,

It depends on what you are going for. If you are just using it to kinda play around a bit, then I think you are on the right track w/ a small Marshall. I might also recommend something small on the Fender side. Crate may be another option too. Solid amps, good prices.

I had an Ibanez for awhile, and they are solid starting guitars. Did you look at foriegn-made Stratocasters? Those are good too.

But, if you are just starting to play, I would recommend learning on an acoustic guitar. The 'action', or distance from the strings to the fretboard, is much higher than an electric. So, when you learn hos to play an acoustic, you can switch to electric and really play it that much easier.

Either way, rock out.

15-20 watt Fenders are a good start. They have your clean and distortion settings and can give you good enough volume at the same time. The 15 watt Marshalls are expensive, but are the best quality practice amps out there. I would recommend going to a music store and giving a couple a try and see if the Marshalls sound $50 better to you Fender/Crate type amps.

There are a lot of people more experienced with guitar than I am, but I would NEVER buy a practice amp. Either you get into guitar and will need to upgrade immediately or you'll drop the whole thing and won't be able to sell it for anything much.

Instead, get a decent 50W solid-state amp (from Fender, at this level) and make your guitar not sound like crap. You can always sell it if it turns out guitar's not your thing.

My advice would be that a cheap practice amp is a good thing if you are just getting started. As others have mentioned, they do sound crappy for the most part and you will eventually have to move up to a better amp eventually. But if that's all you can do now, it may be better than nothing. Crate, Fender and Ibanez all make cheap practice amps. My advice would be to spend as little as possible now because if you do stick with guitar, you will want a better amp so don't waste you money.

thanks code and hog fever, you guys helped on the guitar thread too, so I knew you guys would come out here, and thanks to everyone else whos also helped. Im guessing im gonna have to spend 100$ now on an amp, thing is, Im gonna live in an apartment or my room the next 2 years at least, and therefore, cannot have a larger amp really, a 15 watt amp should be solid enough Id think for now. You guys brought up a good point though, but I dont really mind for now, its only gonna be a hobby anyways.

Hog Fever, I know that you suggested a Peavey amp also earlier, that was i think 87$, the marshall 15 watt amp is 100$. I practice on a Crate 15 watt amp now, which seems pretty good (my friend loves it). Am I pretty much solid with any of those brands, Roland included? Im gonna look up reviews now anyways.

To FreakoftheNorth, Im mainly gonna play rock and metal, I also understand buying the acoustic first, and I may do that eventually. Ibanez seemed to have some models best in my interest that had really good sound ratings. Anyways, thanks again for the help, post more if you have more info, Ill make sure to share what I finally decide when I visit guitarcenter next weekend.

I like Peavey gear. You honestly wouldn't be bad off with the Marshall MG-10, the Peavey Rage 158 or the Roland Cube 15. Any of them will work as decent practice amps. All three have headphone jacks. Honestly the sound difference between the amps at this level isn't going to be all that great.

Almost all of the practice amps manufactured at this price point are built in the same Korean factory. That’s not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind. Watch e-bay and save yourself some cash.

well, guys, thanks for all your help, earlier today I went and bought my first guitar and amp from Guitar Center. I finally decided on the Ibanez GSA 60, it was recommend by one of my friends as well, and my other friend who came with me said it seemed fine. Here is its info:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040731090612068100173123299989/g=guitar/s=electric/search/detail/base_pid/519536/

I was also thinking of this Jackson guitar they had, but went with the Ibanez. I bought a Crate amp, 15 watts, their simple 15 watt kind, nothing big, I was thinking of buying from e-bay as Hog Fever recommended, but then I figgered I was there so may as well just buy it new. Also, the salesperson was real nice, threw in an 18.5 ft cord for free. Overall, I am hopeful about my new guitar and hope it will serve me well. Once again, thanks for your guys help.
