Baby hostage stabbed in police standoff

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A man who took a baby hostage stabbed the infant during a standoff with police before officers shot and wounded the man in the hip.

The baby was flown to a Salt Lake City hospital Friday night with stab wounds to some internal organs, but was expected to live, St. George police spokesman Craig Harding said Saturday.

Police identified the suspect as Valentin S. Echevarria, and said the child was believed to be his girlfriend's. Officials were not sure if the child was his.

The child's mother ran to a neighbor and called police Friday night, saying she had been stabbed in the hand by a man who still had her baby in her home.

Officers negotiated with the man -- who was in the country illegally -- in Spanish, but he did not drop the knife and continued to threaten the child.

When officers saw Echevarria stab the baby, they tried to subdue him with the beanbag rounds, then bullets, Harding said.

"It stopped him from doing what he was doing and we were able to grab the child and rush it to medical services," Harding said.

An officer grabbed the child and ran it to a waiting ambulance. Harding believed the child is a boy around 6-7 months old, but wasn't certain about the gender.

Echevarria, 28, had been deported recently, Harding said. He was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the hip, then taken to a jail and held on charges of aggravated attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping, Harding said.

What a jackass!! This SOB had a rap sheet got departed and come back to the States to commit multiple crimes. This is an example what is wrong with our immigration policy in this country.

As a resident of Utah, I am mad that they did away with the firing squad. This guy needed the firing squard immediately. Also a tax payer, along with Utah and PCS, we will end up spending lots of money to try him and convict him and them house him in our prison system.

No worries UtahSkinsFanatic, we were discussing up at USU a couple of weeks ago as to the best way to use our tax dollars on our criminals.

We feel it would be worth the money to ship these types of individuals to our local College football fields and allow for them to take a personal attempt to understand what kind of pounding an indivdual can take without pads.

Or better yet, let them play "Smeer the Queer" and super glue the ball in their hands and claim you ran out of pads for them.

What surprises me is that the officers still attempted to subdue the subject with bean bags AFTER he stabbed the infant. The use of deadly force would have been justified after the stabbing. The bean bags weren't nessesary, and in my opinion took precious seconds away from rescuing the innocent baby, which could have died while they were trying to figure out a way to subdue this prick without shooting him. The officers were probably worried about getting some lawsuit shoved in their face by the "police brutality" crowd complaining that they could have subdued the subject without killing him. Lucky for them he lived. Lucky for him it wasn't me shooting.
