Mickalino
Receiver Tony Marin was cut by the Falcons. Even at 36, he led the team in receiving despite missing 4 games to injury. The Skins pursued him last offseason, and may do so again, if Westbrook departs
bulldog
I don't think Marty will sign Tony Martin. Not only is Martin a shady character off the field, but he is an injury prone player on the field. At 36, how much can this guy have left? There is a reason why he has bounced around as much as he has. Martin fails the character test and while that might not have been applied by Norv to any of the Skins draft picks and free agents, it does seem to be on Marty's list of measurables. Originally posted by bulldog:At 36, how much can this guy have left? As it stands now, Rod Gardner is the ONLY receiver under contract for next year, that has ANY NFL experience. You sure you want to go into next season with that little experience on your receiving crew ? Are you convinced that Rod, D-Mac, Derrius, Skaggs, and some other rookie draft choices or rookie free agents are going to do the job ? And what's wrong with haivng another long-time veteran around, especially with a bunch of youngsters. It worked with Henry Ellard and Irving Fryar. Originally posted by bulldog:There is a reason why he has bounced around as much as he has. Martin has played for THREE different teams in his 12 year career. That's bouncing around ? And 2 of those teams took him back a SECOND time, after he left. He can't be much of a cancer if teams keep taking him back Originally posted by bulldog:Martin fails the character test and while that might not have been applied by Norv to any of the Skins draft picks and free agents, it does seem to be on Marty's list of measurables. By what standards does Martin fail the character test ? Be more specific. Like I said earlier, he can't be such a shady character, if both Atlanta and Miami took him back a 2nd time. bulldog
from what I remember Martin has been involved in both drug and firearms cases earlier in his career. That was one of the reasons Tony left the Falcons in the first place and ended up back in Miami. I realize that Gardner is the only receiver with experience coming back as things are set now. I believe that before all is said and done that younger veteran players will become available in free agency that will suit the team far better over the next couple of years. Once again, I don't see Marty bringing in any more geezers on the Redskins unless they are ones that have had ties to him in KC like Barker or Szott. bulldog
oh, and a final point. The Falcons were the team that traded away their big play receiver in Tim Dwight to get Vick, correct? And Martin was as you said their leading receiver this season. so why are the Falcons letting him go if not on account of his age and/or declining abilities? I didn't read where his contract was that large........
Jimbo
I can't see a 36 year old Tony Martin making any more of a difference than Irving Fryer or Henry Ellard and those guys were model citizens in the locker room. Unfortunately, Westbrook just doesn't seem a perfect fit in Marty's system. Unless Marty can adjust the offensive scheme (AND get rid of Jimmy Raye) then there's no point in retaining Westbrook. That said, Marty needs a possession receiver who runs good routes and can occasionally get deep opposite Gardner. Is Martin that guy? I doubt it. Martin and Kevin Lockett are too similar at this point in Martin's career. I'd love to see Marty draft a guy like Josh Reed from LSU who could definitely fit that bill but that too is a long shot. It may be up to the players we have to step up.
NavyDave
Why is it that we need a retread at receiver when we have Skaggs and D Mac costing little or nothing with plenty of size and speed. Skaggs was reported to be a 200/400 meter colllege champ and he is running a sub 4.3 40 at 6'4 as compares favorably with Thrash according to Champ. ------------------ Take A Sip of the Marty KoolAid and Believe. Brave
I'm all for finding some youth out there. Most of our "retreads" haven't panned out too well. I must disagree with Jimbo about Henry Ellard, though. If all retreads could play that well for that long at that age I wouldn't mind bringing in the old guys so much. He was a rarity IMHO.
