The worst ever?

Recommended Posts

Was listening to WTEM late last night and whoever was on (around 11:30) was discussing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and their botched trade. One of the guys started going off on them and called them the worst pro sports franchise ever.

Then they started going through each major sport. This is what they came up with:

NBA: The Bulls (although the Wizards were mentioned)

NHL: The Islanders

NFL: The Bengals (I'd put the Cards as a close second though)

Any thoughts on this? I really only follow football. I'd be interested to hear which franchises you guys think really blow (currently, historically .... whatever.)

The Bulls as the worst NBA franchise? Please, they did have that run with a certain guy named Jordan. If they're the worst, it's only because people have short memories. I'd probably go GOlden State for worste NBA franchise. The Wiz/Bullets certainly haven't given me much to chear about either (not old enough for their glory days).

In the NFL, the Bengals have atleast made the Superbowl and played pretty well in it as I recall. I'd have to go with the Cards on that one.

Worst ever? That's tough because you need to define what ever is......(very Clintonesque)

My 2cents:

NBA: LA Clippers

MLB: Washington Senators

NHL: tough call with so much turnover, but Vancouver has been generally bad forever.

NFL: Cardinals (Bengals had worst ever winning pct for a team in a decade during the 1990s, which is why they get honorable mention)

Basketball: The Clippers, or more recently, Vancouver.

Football: Arizona Cardinals. At least the Bengals have appeared in two Superbowls.

Baseball: Chicago Cubs. Since 1912 and waiting.....

Hockey: Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes (don't bank on that, though, hockey is my least knowlegeable sports subject)

I think the reasoning behind picking the Bulls was that the stink now, and aren't looking to improve much at all in the forseeable future, whereas both the Wizards and the Clippers appear to be headed in the right direction. Not that I necessarily agree with this, but that's what one guy was saying.

I don't really follow basketball, but I'd put the Wizards up there with the Clippers as my top (bottom) two.

Worst ever huh?

Hmmmm...

Well I'd say in the NFL it has to be a team that has never played in a championship game. Either an NFL, AFL or Super Bowl. With this criterion in mind I'd say the worst ever franchise in the NFL has got to be the New Orleans Saints. They've won one playoff game in their entire 34 year existance.

As for worst franchise as it stands now it's a toss up between the Cardinals and Bengals. Both teams have horrendous owners. Both teams have fielded consistent loosing teams over the past decade.

In the NBA I'd have to go the the paperClips. The other franchise in L.A. They get absolutely no respect league wide. Geting drafted by the Clippers is like getting sentenced to a gulag in Siberia.

The worst ever franchise in MLB is a tough choice. The Devil Rays have only been around for a couple of years. Sure they suck and will probably be disbanded. But their short time existance eliminates them from worst ever contention. That dishonor goes to the Cubs. They were a horrible franchise for decades until they became fashionable in the 80s. Now they're one of the top teams in the league but they were horrible for so many years it's frightening.

I don't know enough about hockey to make an informed opinion about the worst franchise in the NHL.

I'm certainly no fan of Donald Sterling or the Clippers, but you can only condemn them as the worst in the NBA based upon history. I think the Vancouver Grizzlies, who are moving to Memphis (read as "not exactly a metropolis") because they couldn't draw flies in Vancouver should be nominated. The Clippers have managed to put together a few strong drafts and have resigned their coach. My bet is they make the playoffs next year as a 6-8 seed out of the West.

In the NHL, from what I understand the Tampa Bay Lightening are the worst run franchise and just plain suck from top to bottom. I think they were under Japanese ownership for a time, and their owners had no interest in or knowledge about hockey, if I recall correctly.

Re NFL, I can't choose between Cincy and 'Zona in terms of the last decade, but Cincy's two Super Bowls make them look better historically. Seattle should get mention here too along with New Orleans.

MLB- Devil Rays hands down.
