Trade w/ Denver

you can't trade Deion because of the cap implications. To trade him the Redskins would first have to activate him and that would put his $3.6 million figure back on the cap of the active roster.

To do that now would be problematic. In addition when a player is traded his entire bonus is accelerated to this year. So, we would be liable upon making the trade to account for his entire cap hit RIGHT NOW. That is much more than the $3.6 million figure.

So, activating Deion for him to play here or as a prelude to trading him is really not an option.

What we could do is "unofficially" tell Deion we will let him go to Denver if he agrees to pay back some more of bonus.

At the same time we can tell the Broncos that if they traded us one of their backup quarterbacks for say a conditional #7 pick than the Skins would not stand in the way of Deion's departure for Denver upon coming out of retirement.

Oh by the way, forget about Leon Lett. Were you around last year when all the Cowboys started salibating at the dollars Danny was "giving" away. Well where are they now. Jones being the latest addition is enough. It is more than pride, since the upside and even on his downside is not good enough to go after. We really need to look elsewhere for a DT, Safety.

If memory serves me correctly, we can't trade Deion, because once you formally submit your retirenment papers, you must sit out one full season.

But if that were not true, I don't see why we wouldn't trade him. Whether we trade him or cut him, it's all the same, we still save 3.5 million against this year's cap, and we don't take the big cap hit until Next year, since it's well after June 1st.

As for Bulldog's point about not being able to reactivate Deion, I would only agree if we signed anyone that affected our cap. But to my knowledge, we've only signed Bankstson and Ki-Jana for the minimum. So I don't think we ate into the 3.5 Mil of savings. And I know that neither Gardner or Smoot ate into the savings because they way they fit into this year's cap was determined and agreed upon before Deion's retirement (that was what forced Deion's Hand).

Bankston, Boose and Ki-jana DID eat into the 3.6 million savings from deoin retiring. They all recieve vet minimum salaries which is higher than rookie minimum salaries. the highest 51 salaries count against the cap. So the difference between their salaries and the three rookie salaries has to be taken into account also.

But I don't think you understood. To reactivate him, puts his cap number back up. Which is possible but probably entails reworking some stuff to make it fit again. And then there's no emergency room for injuries. To trade him means the skins would have a cap hit of 5 million (thats the figure I think I've heard) or more this year. A traded players signing bonus (all of it) accelerates into the year he's traded. It would ALL count this year, not get spread into next year. The only way around that to me (if there is one) would be deoin giving his signing bonus back or rework his contract somehow, lowering his cap hit. And of course Gene Washington and the leaque would be pulling out the microscopes trying to find something to go nuts over.

It would take a lot of shenanigans to work this out.

First and foremost, I am NO "cap-ologist". Having said that this is what I understand:

1. As Montilar explained, all of his cap hit would come into effect now. That's not necissarily an bad thing in that we wouldn't have any of the hit next year. Can we make the numbers work now? I don't know.

2. Even if we do make him pay back his signing bonus, it has NO effect on the cap. It would just be money going back into Snyder's pocket, but it does nothing directly for the team.

3. Yes, the league does have to approve and/or authorize Deon coming back from retirement but I read somewhere that that is just a formality and we can expect the league to approve that no sweat; especially for a "personality" as "prominent" as what's his face.

That's all of the technical stuff I think I know or understand. If any expert out there really knows, I'm all ears.

Having said that, don't you think we can get more for Deon than Gus? Seattle just lost Springs, maybe we can get a DT or DE from them. We still have 3 more weeks of pre-season and teams will get more and more anxious as we get closer to the star of the real season. I wouldn't want to be so hasty as to not get some market value from him if/when we trade away his rights and Gus just doesn't seem worth it. I think we can do better.

He11 no.

Let him rot.

The trade scenarios are also unrealistic the Broncs don't have a need for CBs their first three will rival the skins triplets.

I'd just pickup Cortez Kennedy without giving up draft picks and just give him an incentive laced one year contract if you want to go the desperate route.

Something else to consider.

If Deion does not play another day in the NFL, he will enter the Hall of Fame in a Redskin uniform. I would be willing to make that deal if for nothing else to avoid that embarrassment. He does have to sit out the year BUT can petition Tags to lift that rule. According to Chris Mortenson it is really just a formality.

Kilmer, that's not true. A player does not go into the Hall based on which team he played for LAST.

Otherwise Deacon Jones would be in as a Redskin as would Sam Huff.

When a player is selected for consideration, the writers usually ballot him according to the team where he made his reputation and played the majority of his career if appropriate.

In a related vein, Art Monk is not going in as a New York Jet because he spent his last full season in NY.

"Frerotte, who finished 11-of-14 for 103 yards, was 4-of-4 for 50 yards on his opening drive, capping it with a 2-yard lob to third-string tight end Patrick Hape. Hape was wide open because a bootleg froze the Dallas defense -- for the fifth time in the first 20 minutes. "

Apparently, Frerotte has been looking really sharp in camp and in preseason. It'll take a lot to convince Denver to get rid of him. Probably a second rounder.... is he worth it?

The reason Art Monk will go in a Redskin is because he signed a 1 day contract after he retired from the Jets (or was it the Eagles?) Teams sign guys to one day deals for this reason. The problem with Deion is that none of his former teams want him either.

Kilmer, what about Deacon Jones? He still went in as a Ram even though he finished up with the Skins and Chargers.

Do you think Andre Reed will go in as a Redskin? How about Bruce Smith?

My guess is that Deion goes in as a Cowboy based on that is where he perhaps reached the zenith of his career in 1995-98.

My understanding was that the one day contract was done so Monk could retire as a Redskin, but I've never heard that it was necessary to be inducted by one team over another.

There has been considerable discussion about what team Deion would want to be inducted with leading me to believe a player could choose, but I don't know that for a fact.

Most fans commenting couldn't have cared less. I wouldn't mind seeing him frozen out, though to be completely fair his career may well warrant induction.

I wonder who ole PT21 would have him represent?

Brave, to answer your question it's probably Dallas...mentioning his name will make 80% of the people think of the star on his helmet while he was with the Cowboys, even though his years as a Falcon were equally great since he didnt have the supporting cast and it was there that PrimeTime was created (and first displayed)...I have also heard people tell me that Deion said he was going to the HOF as a 49er, but it could be a bunch of crap!

Oh guys I thought I'd remind you that it is Deion Sanders night on ESPN Classic laugh.gif
