kearse to become a free agent!!! (MERGED)

i just read the tenn paper --they stated kearse will most likely be set free--the reason is that the titans want to sign mcclariens, bennett, kinney, robare smith all free agents(either resticted or unrestricted)

the paper stated if they sign kearse there will be no way they can sign the 4-5 players they need or want back--thus getting rid of 5 players vs 1 player is what the titans will most likely not do

Kearse atop big cap woes awaiting Titans

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

The Titans are facing plenty of changes this offseason, and several already have taken place.

Kicker Gary Anderson and quarterback Neil O'Donnell have headed into retirement. Tight end Frank Wycheck will soon make it official and follow them.

Facing a difficult battle with the salary cap, however, the Titans won't be able to re-sign all of their free agents. Other players will be released.

The free agency period begins March 2.

''Change is inevitable,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said last Sunday. ''Every offseason now, there will be some change that will obviously take place in the next six weeks or so. We have some very difficult decisions to make by March 2.''

Here's a position-by-position breakdown heading into the offseason:

Quarterback

A big goal for 2004 will be to keep Steve McNair healthier. Backup Billy Volek, who stepped up when given a chance, is an unrestricted free agent and the Titans plan on re-signing him. Jason Gesser will need a good offseason because he's going to have competition for the No. 3 job in training camp.

Running back

The Titans would like Eddie George back but not if they can't adjust his $7.32-million salary-cap figure. Backup Chris Brown showed promise, but he needs to get a lot stronger and more explosive. Veteran Robert Holcombe's roster spot doesn't look very secure.

Wide receiver

Derrick Mason will again be McNair's top target. Justin McCareins and Drew Bennett are both restricted free agents, and the Titans will make tender offers to both. But they'll have to be ready for another team to make a run at McCareins, who will be even more of a playmaker in 2004. Tyrone Calico needs to be more consistent. Darrell Hill improved in 2003 and will return, but it's getting close to now-or-never time for Jake Schifino because of his injury history. Restricted free agent Eddie Berlin probably won't be tendered.

Tight end

The cupboard could be close to bare in a hurry. Wycheck is retiring and Erron Kinney is an unrestricted free agent. The Titans want Kinney back and will try and make it happen. Shad Meier, a restricted free agent, should get a tender offer and return.

Offensive line

Because of their high salary-cap numbers, left tackle Brad Hopkins ($6.62 million) and right tackle Fred Miller ($6.40 million) probably won't return in tandem. Despite being a few years older than Miller, Hopkins is considered more valuable because he protects McNair's blind side.

Guards Benji Olson and Zach Piller and center Justin Hartwig will return. Tackle Jason Mathews and guard Tom Ackerman may remain on the roster as backups.

Defensive end

Will the Titans strike a long-term deal with Jevon Kearse or will they place the franchise tag on him? The answer could be neither. Kearse is certainly valuable and a heck of a talent when he's healthy. But if his agent Drew Rosenhaus is too demanding, the Titans will have to decide what's more important — re-signing Kearse or re-signing McCareins, Bennett, Meier, Kinney and defensive tackle Robaire Smith. All are restricted or unrestricted free agents.

The Titans are happy with DE/DT Kevin Carter, though his contract will need to be adjusted to lower his high cap number. They'd like to play him at end more, too. Carlos Hall needs a good offseason. Juqua Thomas, a restricted free agent, probably won't be back.

Defensive tackle

The Titans would like the hard-working Smith back, but he figures to get some action in free agency (the Bengals offered John Thornton a lot of money last year and he couldn't afford to turn it down). Albert Haynesworth needs a healthy season and a good attitude from start to finish. Rien Long showed good pass-rush instincts but needs to get stronger in his second NFL season. James Atkins has a ways to go and his return is up in the air.

Linebacker

This group should remain intact next season. Keith Bulluck and Peter Sirmon were again solid on the outside. In between his injuries, Rocky Calmus proved he's capable of manning the inside linebacker spot. Rocky Boiman is valuable and will be counted on in plenty of situational packages. Brad Kassell will provide depth and help on special teams.

Secondary

Cornerbacks Samari Rolle and Andre Dyson will return, as will strong safety Tank Williams. Big things are expected out of last year's top pick, Andre Woolfolk, as he works his way back from ankle surgery. As for free safety, don't be surprised if it comes down to a battle between veteran Lance Schulters and the younger Lamont Thompson, who emerged down the stretch.

The Titans would like to have safety Scott McGarrahan, an unrestricted free agent, back in the mix. The Titans also feel cornerback Tony Beckham will keep getting better. Cornerback Mike Echols will need to show something this offseason to stay around much longer. Safety Donnie Nickey needs to keep learning.

Kicking game

Kicker Joe Nedney, who had surgery on his right knee in September, will reclaim his job and is expected to be 100% in time for training camp. Punter Craig Hentrich will be back as well.

I just posted the article and it does NOT imho state what you claim.

Here's what they say about Kearse's situation..

I read the article as suggesting that a decision is yet to be made by Titan management.

Of course it's open to interpretation, but this is precisely why you should post the article first-- then offer your editirial opinion or interpretation of it.

Still it was a nice find and worthy of being posted here. I hope that you continue to offer positive contributions to our family Bsmss.

They won't tag him, they would have to cut to many people just to get the tag on him as they would need to go about $7-8 million under the cap.

There best hope of getting him back is to get a long term deal with a low cap hit next year in place before the start of free agency.

Exactly. To tag Kearse, the Titans would have to clear something like $23 million or so in cap space. That's the sum of the $16 million over they are now and the $7 million or so they need for the tag itself. That doesn't include space for signing their rookies (which will be about $2.5 million or so) and for other FAs.

Not a pretty situation for Tennessee.

I know it's chic to diss bsmss, but the feeling in Titanland is that Kearse will be cut loose. Partly due to the cap, partly his recent history of injuries and partly due to their ability to have players in waiting. If I were given the choice of signing him I'd do it. Nobody can predict he'll stay injured. He's another Arrington, and worth the gamble. Just my opinion.

Looks like the Titans are in cap hell for sure. Anybody know what they did to get there? Did they sign too many FA's to big contracts? Did they back-load their contracts too heavily? Too many expensive incentive clauses? It would be instructive to see what they did wrong to get themselves into this predicament, so we could learn what not to do.
