Carter fires back at Moss...kinda..

Schroeder is a guy with 4.3 speed, unfortunately he tends to drop the ball as well which is something that has driven Brett Favre crazy at times.

He is a tall guy and only 28 years old. However, I don't see where he is the guy with the kind of starting experience to come in, tutor Gardner, and make this offense go, assuming we acquire an established quarterback.

I like Schroeder . . . as a #2 WR. Assuming Gardner continues to develop as a big, physical possession WR, and his hands continue to grow biggrin.gif , Schroeder as a speedy deep threat opposite of him would be excellent. Schroeder runs good routes, and gets off the line well. True, he gets the dropsies at times, but he's just the kind of guy we could sign as a FA who won't cost millions, will have an immediate impact, and who already is familiar with the WCO. He's also a hard working player who seems to fit the Marty mold. I'd take him over Carter in a heartbeat.

Actually, Schroeder might be just right for us. I think Marty has already decided that Garnder's our #1 guy, so really we need a very good #2. Schroeder is that. He's not going to command a huge salary and has the speed to compliment Gardner's size. I'm not sure Gardner NEEDS a tutor, and even if he does we could get an Irving Fryar-type at the #3 spot.

I don't know. Maybe Favre makes him look good, but he certainly helps keep defenses honest. Ahman Green ain't no Stephen Davis.

Schroeder is intriguing, but can you imagine how many balls will be laying on the turf if our WRs are Gardner and Schroeder and if Alexander was to somehow be back next season at TE? That would be enough to drive a QB to drink.

Come to think of it, some of Washington's greatest heros were known to nip at the bottle from time to time, weren't they? smile.gif

Time for a Killian's.

I don't understand Gardner. He sounds so lousy, but then he makes a play, and you can't help but love him. Here's the rap on him: He can't catch, and he's slow. That sounds like the antithesis of a wide reciever. Most are either slow but have good hands, or are fast but can't catch. Rod doesn't have either.

I think he's overrated. Unless he has some serious improvements, then he's not worthy of being a number one reciever.

the maturation process for an NFL wide receiver is longer than it is for a running back. you can't expect a rookie wideout to come to a team with an offense this dysfunctional and produce outstanding numbers from the get go.

let's look at his 40 catches and 700 yards receiving and 4 td's in perspective. those are solid numbers for a rookie. go around and check the records of the first and second round receivers from the last draft and Gardner's numbers are very good in a comparison.

but look beyond the numbers and realize that Rod has played with 3 quarterbacks in his first camp plus 2 games!

Jeff George was throwing him the ball at minicamp, Todd Husak was throwing him the ball in training camp and then Tony Banks was throwing him the ball 2 weeks into the season.

I don't know about you, but with the schizophrenic nature of the Redskins offense this season you may not be able to adequately judge ANY of the Redskins receivers.

The quarterbacks cumulatively have been among the least productive in the NFL going back to the beginning of preseason. Husak's numbers were awful, George's numbers were awful those first few games and Banks' numbers are good only in comparison to the other two laugh.gif

Antonio Freeman dropped the ball a lot early in his career, so did Tim Brown with the Raiders. Cris Carter was an inconsistent player when he was in his early 20's and didn't get his career off until he was 27 or 28 years old.

Gardner should be much improved with an offseason of working with ONE quarterback in ONE system that doesn't undergo a complete metamorphosis from training camp to the regular season.

It might also be helpful if the Redskins brought in a veteran receiver who has something of value to pass along. I can't imagine that Michael Westbrook is exactly a font of information regarding ascending to be a pro bowl receiver in the NFL based on work ethic and preparation biggrin.gif

At 6'2 and 218, Gardner is fast enough at 4.45 to get the job done in the NFL. Rod is a strong receiver that can break tackles and I have yet to see the Redskins quarterbacks consistently hit our receivers in stride with the ball on the short and intermediate routes and allow them to get RAC yardage. The ball arrives in the dirt or over the shoulders. Those kinds of passes get receivers drilled in the back.

Jimmy Raye and Marty are miscasting Rod as the "deep threat" receiver that outruns the secondary down the field. That is not his game.

And to be fair no one thought it was leafing through his pre-draft bio. Here is a player that should excel at the slant, crossing routes and deep outs where the opportunity to use size, strength and route running skills are maximized. Unfortunately those are the types of passes the Redskins avoid throwing because Banks' is not adept at delivering those passes with aan accurate hand.
