Win likely extends Spurrier's tenure as coach

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Paid to catch passes, Rod Gardner won the game for the Washington Redskins with a touchdown toss.

Laveranues Coles, also paid to catch passes, rescued the Redskins as well when he forced a fumble that Randy Thomas recovered in their own end zone in the first half.

Gardner took a lateral and threw a 10-yard pass to a wide open Trung Canidate with 1:57 to play, giving the Redskins a 27-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday and calming -- at least for a week -- the turmoil surrounding the future of Washington coach Steve Spurrier.

The trick play wasn't the only audacious call Spurrier made on the winning drive. The coach went for a fourth-and-inches at his own 25, and fullback Rock Cartwright barely made it after a huge hit by linebacker Anthony Simmons.

Coles caught five passes for 125 yards and a touchdown for the Redskins (4-5), who broke a four-game losing streak. Cartwright ran for a career-high 81 yards -- including a tough 21-yard run after breaking a tackle at the line of scrimmage on the winning drive.

The Seahawks fell to 6-3. They are 1-3 on the road.

Seattle drove for a chance to tie after Gardner's touchdown pass, but Fred Smoot intercepted a bobbled pass by Darrell Jackson inside Washington's 30 with 39 seconds remaining.

With the Redskins trailing 14-3 early in the second quarter, Damien Robinson intercepted a pass and ran 26 yards down the sideline toward an apparent touchdown. Coles caught him from behind, stripped the ball and Thomas fell on it for a touchback.

Given a second chance, Washington drove 80 yards and scored when Coles made another outstanding play -- a tiptoe catch at the back of the end zone for a 15-yard reception that made the score 14-10.

The Seahawks kicked a field goal on their next possession, but the Redskins went to the two-minute offense to tie the score just before halftime. A 31-yard pass to Coles set up a 14-yard TD throw to Gardner, who fought off pass interference from Shawn Springs to make the catch.

The Redskins kept the momentum in the second half. Coles' 14-yard reverse run set up a 42-yard field goal that gave Washington the lead.

The Seahawks tied the game on Josh Brown's 48-yard field goal with 9:59 to play.

Before Coles' fumble recovery, the game was an embarrassment for the Redskins. The defense couldn't stop the Seahawks, who drove 43 and 90 yards for touchdowns on their first two possessions. Bobby Engram was wide open for a 5-yard score, and Shaun Alexander ran 1 yard for a touchdown set up by a third-down screen to Mack Strong.

The Redskins scored first, with John Hall kicking a 20-yard field goal after Maurice Morris fumbled the opening kickoff.

Bruce Smith did not start for the second straight week for the Redskins, but he had one sack to move within one-half sack of tying Reggie White's all-time record.
