Redskins-Bills: 4 Keys To The Game

Recommended Posts

This is such a perfect time to let White play against #1s. We know what Reex can and will do. He will look good for periods of the game then cough up a huge fur ball when it matters most. Sorry but that's his MO.

We need to see if White can handle playing against the #1s. Winning or losing this game is absolutely meaningless. Lets find out right now what we have in White.

Outside of that, I agree lower the penalties (although last week we just had 7, 1 was a message sent from our D captain to the dirty cheating steelers and the other was horrible call, still...).

Also, let's try someone else at RT, anyone else!  Geez, he was beat like a rented mule!

Finally, let's settle the RB carousel. I have yet to really see Jamison. He must be destined for the PS and MS doesn't want tape on him so no one picks him up (not that MS would use such deceptive tactics - you go coach!).

Hail Goskins- I must say that I like your idea of giving White a look against a 1st team defense. He would probably do well mostly because the read option and his speed in running. Don't really think that Coach will do it though, he has a tendency to think Rex is not as bad as the turnovers indicate.

Your comment about 1 of the penalties was a message sent from our D captain...please explain that,I may have missed something but love the idea of Fletch or Cofield retaliating.

Should we give another player outside of Polumbus a look? You know he's going to start 1st game. Kinda hard to pull him if he needs work, esp. with Griff coming back, but make Polumbus play and represent himself, seems Coach thinks he's the best man for the job. Looks like he took a step backwards on Monday night. HTTR!!!

Re - The message - On the second play of the game, London Fletcher got into it with Maurkice Pouncey who was trying to be physical with him. Pouncey tried to pull London down by his face mask. London grabbed dude by the face mask and pushed him back to the ground. A mini scrum broke out. He knew he would get 15. There was some discussion after where several of the guys said that play kind of set the tone. It showed the steelers we would not back down from them.

Hail goskins, Jamison's small sampling from the last game was 5 of 20 for long of 6. You probably already know about the stats but below is a John Keim breakdown of Jamison's performance.

Did like Jawan Jamison’s patience. He’s a good fit in this sort of system, though it would be nice if he were a couple inches and 15 pounds heavier. He gained 20 yards on five runs; I liked a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter where he exhibited patience and cutting ability. Jamison looked like he was headed wide and the linebacker flowed that way, creating a cutback lane for a 6-yard gain. It wasn’t some highlight run, but it was an example of a good one. Thompson’s explosiveness still bears watching, but Jamison knows how to run. If only…

I'm convinced Jamison is a strong candidate for PS. Most teams are not looking for a every down back of his size. I think the staff really likes Thompson's explosiveness where they'd like to use him in 3rd down and zone read triple threat option later in the season. Of course Thompson needs to prove he doesn't have a fumble issue. Keiland Williams is in a tough spot and the coaching staff gave him the bulk of the carriers in the last game. I expect one or both rooks will have the bulk of the carriers in the 2nd half of this next game. While Keiland has looked solid running the ball, I'd be shocked if he makes the team. Only an injury could make that possible IMO.

This may sound odd but I figure Pat White should get most of the playing time during this game against the Bills ..Our offense needs the Reps to get timed with RG3 and White is  able to mirror RG3's Speed in this offense.Putting Rex Grossman in near the end say 3rd or fourth quarter would give our veterans time to get full speed reps in.HTTR

@ red_dog - It doesn't sound odd at all. As a matter of fact I said something similar above. I would really like to see them put White in to start the game and let him play the entire 1st half. I might even let him play the whole game.

If he does not get much playing time though, I would see that as a clear sign he is not making the 53 man roster. The only reason to play rex in the first half is because he is making the team. We can't keep 4. We will release White and sign an un-drafted rookie to the PS.

I would not keep either of these two, we could always pick up rex if needed as I can't see another team signing him

Both Grossman and White will make the cut at 75 players, both I think the Redskins will only carry 2 QB's on the 53 man roster. Is keeping Grossman or White worth losing players like Briscoe, LeRibeus, Paul, Royster, Barnett or Gettis (who are all NFL assets now IMO). How about guys like Dawson, Lewis, Jamison, Nixon, Thompson, Jamison, all of who will not clear waivers to be signed to the PS. I can not see any team signing Grossman or White until a QB injury hits, but most of the guys listed above would be seen a players who could help a team this year and help build some of the lesser teams (i.e. Free extra draft picks). This is the first year in a long time where we are going to lose players with skills we would like keep due to the increased talent level from rebuilding. We can not keep 3 QB's this years on the 53 man roster and lose skilled players (not if we want to keep getting better).

This is going to be the most interesting roster cut downs in many a year. This is where GM Allen earns his pay check. How many of these guys are worth placing on IR? how many can he get pass the waiver wire to the PS? How unbalanced can the 53 man roster be in order to protect players and still be ready for injury replacements and Special Teams? What do you do with a guy like Minnifield, Crawford, as teams are always looking for CB's. Will we see some trades? This is a great time to be a Redskins fans knowing we have the same problems of the better NFL teams. (this is also a great time for many younger Redskins fans to learn how the NFL works and to also become Football fans, as well as Redskins fans). HTTR! and it is about time!

@ 28 - Not sured we can got with just RGIII and Cousins with the uncertainty around RGIII and now that cousins is injured, even if it is minor. We will keep either rex or pat guys and IMO it's whoever starts tomorrow.

goskins, I agree it is a gamble but it is nice to be able to have these kind of concerns due to the increased talent levels at all positions! As a side note, many think the real reason Joe Gibbs retired the first time was due to the Cap Space rule and not being able to build his great, highly paid rosters of free agents that would never leave, long IR list of paid players waiting for next year, and being able to go out pay for any required free agents to back up his star players he and Bobby B drafted. Many forget that the Redskins were a big reason the Cap Space Rule came to be as our owner was willing to pay when many other owners were not.

I would cut both Rex and White, I really don't think its a gamble because if we lose both RG3 and Kirk our season would be over IMO so why take a chance on losing a quality player with upside just to have this 3rd QB that no one wants to begin with.

I understand what you are saying, but I can promise you we will keep 3 QBs. We did so last year, we will do so again this year. We have no idea of the durability of RGIII and now Cousins is dinged up. While rex may not be ideal, he does know the system very well. No HC in his right mind would go into a season with 1QB coming off rehab and another dinged up as their only QBs. We see it as game over if the 3rdstring comes in. But don;t you want your best chance to win on the field, even if he does throw it to the other guys too often.

rex or white that is the question. one has expierence and is a turnover machine, the other is unproven but has youth and can mimic rg3 .

i stared 2 threads on this ,1 on the stadium forum here and another on hailskins.com

both threads seemed to echo each other on both sides of the question.

i still think shannahan brought white in for a reason just don't if it was to replace rex or not!!!

while I agree this staff will keep one, I don't agree its the right decision for this team/roster at this point. why lose out on a kid with upside to keep either of these QBs WHO WILL NEVER HELP THIS TEAM WIN ?

The short answer is QB is the most important position. You just can;t afford the chance of bringing is say Tim Tebow....  I mean I like the kid but you think you hate rex as a QB....   Also, there are cap considerations which helps rex's case. Due to his 10 yr vet status we actually get a cap reduction by signing him.

Someone else above (Ken linkins i think) said it's nice to finally be at a point where we will have to cut some talented players. We are finally getting deep enough that's it's going to get harder and harder to make the team as a rookie or FA. While it is a problem, it's a much better problem then keeping the best bad player at each position!  :-)

10 I fully understand what you are saying but do you really think another team will sign Rex Grossman? Sorry I don't, he will be there if we were to need him ;)

Actually, I think he will. There are some really bad QBs out there. And while many here have an extreme hatred for the guy, many teams would be glad to have him as a back-up. It would be a pretty big upgrade. Of course, that's not saying much for their QB situation, but still.

Unfortunately, I don't think we will get a chance to find out. I am almost certain he makes the 53 man roster. He may be inactive game days like most of last years games, but he will be on the team.

That's what i think will happen. As for what I want to happen, I actually agree with you. Cut them both and hope at least one is there if you need them.

On another note, what do you think about the idea of keeping a kickoff specialist? I don't like it. I think Forbath can get it deep enough. Our KO coverage was pretty decent even with his shorter than most KOs. But there are rumblings they might use a slot for a PO specialist.
