Marvin Lewis just may be COOLER than Steve Spurrier

check out Keim's interview with Marvin Lewis... I'm drooling already. Man coverage, eff with the QB, puts Bruce in his place, etc.... the man is a badass.

http://redskins.theinsiders.com/2/41662.html

quote:
Q: Your linebackers in Baltimore last year had more sacks than all the Redskins combined. Do you like to bring them more?

A: We'll pressure when it's appropriate to pressure. And when they think we're not going to pressure them, then we're going to pressure. When they get off the bus they know we'll try to knock the quarterback down. That's part of playing defense. If you don't affect that guy under center then you haven't left the game leaving the right impression. When they line up to play they know we're going to attack the offense. In order to be successful you have to play man to man. [Fred Smoot and Champ Bailey] give us a lot of flexibility and they like to play it and that's the fun thing.

Q: How is this challenge different from others in your career?

A: There's some legitimacy to how we do things. Maybe there was doubt before. Now there are no doubts, even though you're coming in as the new man on the block. We're in that honeymoon period now. There's no such thing as a guru or a genius. We'll work very hard at what we do.

Q: There's some talk that Bruce Smith might be more effective if he doesn't have to play every down. Is that something you might bring up with him?

A: We won't have to talk to him about it. If that's the best thing for our team, that's the way it's going to be. We're not in a popularity contest. Obviously if we can limit his exposure on the field and get off the field on third downs, we'd eliminate snaps right there. We want to develop a young defensive end who can take pressure off Bruce.

Q: You have a healthy attitude when it comes to losing players. How do you do that when you sometimes have to cut them because of the salary cap or when you can't afford them?

A: The greatest thing about free agency is the opportunity. If we can't pay him what he feels like he can make elsewhere then he has a chance to shop his wares. We'll pick the next young guy and put that young guy in that spot, pat him on the butt, pump him up and go forward. He'll see he was treated fairly and the next guy will look at that and see that he got his chance and look what he did. If we can't afford him, it's great if he can go elsewhere because in this [day and age] you get a chance to get them on the rebound. Then they'll look at how they were treated [before].

Q: How much of a mentoring role have you played for Steve?

A: That's up to coach. That's not of my choosing. When he asks me a question I have to give him a good answer. He asks questions from time to time about things and that's good. That was part of the attraction, both ways, of me coming here, was to assist him in some of those areas. Anybody who ever spends any time around him knows that he's one person who doesn't think he knows everything and he has questions about how they do this or what's being done around the NFL.

Lewis to me is a lot like Parcells. He has a ring and doesn't sugar coat things. Players respect that.

He doesn't believe in heroes but in 22 players working to be the best they can be.

Who can argue with that.

One thing. Spurrier and Lewis are about PERFORMANCE.

If Bruce Smith or anyone else thinks he's going to get a free ride he they are mistaken.

At the same time, maybe the reason Bruce and some others were so hard to get along with before was they didn't have the confidence in the men at the top in 2000 and 2001.

Nice find TCO!

How is Lewis not a head coach? He's got a set of friggin bowling balls hanging between his legs.

I love what he said about handling old #78 if he decides to limit his play time. "We won't have to talk to him about it. If that's the best thing for our team, that's the way it's going to be. We're not in a popularity contest."

If a reporter had asked Marty the same question last year he would have said some gobledygook BS like, "Bruce and I will sit down and discuss the situation and then come to an accord." Translation, Bruce will set his own playing time.

I really like the approach this Spurrier-Lewis coaching staff has taken so far.

SAGE IS DA MAN!!!

Unfortunately Smith assumes he's going to get special treatment. We all got on Marty for not giving him special treatment last year, and now we're acting like Marvin is our savior because he says it like it is. C'mon brothers.

Sure he started off by attempting to lay down the law with BS but that didn't last very long.

The moment that BS hurt his shoulder in training camp and threw his helmnet to the ground in disgust the days of Marty calling the shjots were over.

From that point forward Bruce played and won a passive agressive battle of wills against Schottenheimer. Bruce decided when he was ready to practice again. Bruce decided how long he would play in games. Bruce called the shots as the grizzled vet in the lockeroom and clubhouse lawyered against Marty undermining his authority. Bruce grabbed Snyder's ear and said that he was hurting the team. Bruce did the interview on ESPN where he said that Marty had spies in the locker room. Bruce single handedly did everything in his power to get Marty fired. In the end he got his wish but as they say, be careful what you wish for because you just might get more than you can handle.

If Marty knew how to play the REAL game-- politics-- he would have cut Bruce the moment he lost control of him.

[ March 27, 2002, 09:30 PM: Message edited by: BallCoachSpurrier ]

Poor Marty.

Poor Marty?

Marty took us on a megalomaniacal roller coaster ride in 2001 where he at first acted like he was Julius Caesar and ended the year trying to make believe he was the Redskins' version of Papa Bear George Halas.

All he had to do to get this team to 10-11 wins was to admit to himself in February of 2001 that he needed help calling the shots on personnel on the offensive side of the ball.

A real personnel guy in the front office or a top offensive coordinator would have jettisoned Jeff George and brought in Trent Dilfer for reasonable dollars.

Instead we ended up with Banks and Graham because Marty guessed wrong on Jeff George and didn't cover himself by having a capable backup on the team.

2001 was a wasted season.

I don't know if he's cooler or not, but his "quiet strength" personality is a great counterbalance to SS's ****y quips. I loved to tone he set about getting pressure, trusting in Champ and Smoot, 'doing what's right' and not what one player wants, etc. This guy seems like a team player of a coach and even if we only get to keep him for a year, I think he's set himself up to lead a D we're likely to remember for some time.
